  • Because of a recent trend of the open and globalized world economy, international trade is getting bigger and there is a trade competition among many countries, resulting in competition between harbor industries. Therefore, as hub-port development of China, Japan and Taiwan is more actively progressing than any other times, Korea should prepare a powerful management system to take the initiative over them. Above all, a new recognition of the governmental officers in charge of political management about hub-port industry and early development of the northeast hub-port are needed. To maximize its distinctiveness from competitive ports, port sale should be actively managed. As well, as port functions are diverse, accompanied site development should be prepared. In conclusion, in order to improve functions of a port and develop the port as a general complex of physical distribution, the government should encourage the accompanied site development and support preparation of a customs-free area and a general system of physical distribution.

  • The goal of the project on developing Korea as the logistics hub of Northeast Asia is to develop Busan Port and Gwangyang Port as international logistics centers by promoting and attracting more warehouses. As is well known, there is intense competition among ports located in major economic blocs to become the regional logistics hub. Gwangyang is second to none in terms of being favorably located at the center of Northeast Asia. Gwangyang Port, however, lacked in SOC construction and faced the poor government support politics hub of Northeast Asia. They are i) expanding the logistics infrastructuressuch as expressway and railroads between Yeosu Airport and Gwangyang Port, ii) Setting up new port hinterland and industrial complex in the vicinity of Gwangyang Port iii) securing high value-added fixed cargo traffic, and iv) improving laws and institutions.

  • As the throughout of transshipment oil cargo in Korea has been increasing, the importance and competition of the oil hub port has also been increasing. The aim of this study is to suggest how the factors influence the competitiveness of the oil hub port based on the specialists' opinions. For doing this, the evaluating factors were obtained from both previous studies and brainstorming of the professionals from the oil hub port. These were divided into groups by the ‘KJ method' according to 5 criteria and were made into a 3 level hierarchy structure. The ‘AHP method' identified the relative importance of factors and trends from the preferences of the specialists. This study presents the factors influencing the competitiveness of the oil hub port.

  • Many countries in the North East Asia are competing with each other in order to become a centre of international logistics activities. The competition to become a hub port in Far East region is now fierce. The anticipated investments on improving port facilities and attracting the mega carriers are immense for all the ports in the region and the extent of the effort could cripple the local ports and region's economy given the limited financial resources. It is, however, impossible to avoid the disastrous possibility that the massive investments could be channeled into the port, which will never become a hub port, as no port is ready to currently admit defeat and settle as a small regional port. In an attempt to minimise such disastrous waste of resources, ports need to verify the eligibility of their own. This paper tests a system dynamics model using the Port of Busan to understand and illustrate the principle guideline of investment decision making for ports.

  • The world economy has came into unlimited competition with globalization since 1990. Opening markets to the world is in progress through the expansion of world free trade and internationalization of multinational enterprises. In the maritime transportation for world trade, shipping companies pursue "Hub & Spoke" strategy so a port which is not able to be located as a hub port is degraded as a feeder port. To attract shipping companies, it is necessary for existing ports to provide differentiated service. This paper devises marketing strategies for a competitive port after evaluating relation among the factors affecting port selection when a shipping company chooses a port of call. On the basis of determinants derived from existing researches, we study the relation as well as importance among the factors of port selection.

  • As China, the world's work shop was transformed into consumption market intermediary products and expensive consumer goods are more in highly demand recently. These will tend to diffuse especially to the west coastal cities of China. The economic growth of China needs to develop hub port facilities more and more in these days. We don't need to explain value of hub port in international trade. Furthermore If we are to retain access convenience of merchant vessel we really must maintain hub ports in Korea. • For a nearly decade Busan has been the pre-dominant force in Northeast Asian port community, but during the last couple of years, several competitors have looked to directly challenge Busan's regional dominance, most notably, northern Chinese ports. Faced with this challenging and formidable trend, Busan has had to respond appropriately to ensure that Busan remains a regional hub well into the 21st century. The aim of this paper is to make some considerations for a regional hub container port in Northeast Asia in response to changes in the shipping industry with particular reference to Korea.
