  • Objectives : The purpose of this case-control research was to investigate the effects of acupuncture stimulation on autonomic nervous system for patients with HRV and to find out relationship with anti-stress effects. Methods : The study group consists of 24 patients with self-recognition of stress as the case group, and 20 normal person as the control group by similar age. We measured HRV of case and control groups before acupuncture stimulation, prick acupuncture in Hegu(LI4), Taichong(Liv3), Shenme(H7), Neiguan(P6), Zusanli(S36). After treating for 20 minutes, measurement values of HRV and PSV were compared for pre-acupuncture and post-acupuncture. Results : 1. LF norm, HF norm, LF/HF between the case and control groups were significant different in HRV before acupuncture stimulation in the 1st experiment. 2. HRT, SDNN, SDSD, LF norm, HF norm, and LF/HF of the case group were significant different in HRV after acupuncture stimulation in the 1st experiment. HRT of the case group was significantly different in HRV after acupuncture stimulation in the 1st experiment. 3. LF norm, HF norm, LF/HF of the case group were significant different between the 1st and 2nd experiment in HRV before acupuncture stimulation. 4. LF norm, HF norm, and LF/HF were significant different between the 1st and 2nd experiment in HRV of patients whose symptoms improved. But HRV of patients whose symptoms unimproved didn't show significant difference. Conclusion : The results suggest that acupuncture stimulation is associated with changed activity in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Measurement values of HRV is suitable to estimate the activity of automatic nervous system.

  • Objectives : This study aims to evaluate the relationship between HRV indices and scores of emotional questionnaires and to find out the effective way to assess patients emotional and physical condition. Methods : We selected 144 patients who had both HRV data and BDI, STAI and STAXI scores on the chart among outpatients from July 2006 to December 2010. The relationship between the scores rated from the questionnaires and HRV indices are analyzed. And the HRV indices of patients included in the top 30 percent group and the bottom 30% group are compared. Results : 1. There were no significant correlations between HRV indices and scores of BDI, STAI and trait anger of STAXI. 2. SDNN and TP of HRV significantly decreased with higher state anger scores of STAXI. The top 30 percent group of state anger had lower SDNN, TP, LF, HF and HRV-index and higher pNN50 than the bottom 30 percent group. 3. RMSSD of HRV significantly decreased with higher anger-in scores of STAXI. The top 30 percent group of anger-in had lower RMSSD than the bottom 30 percent group. Conclusions : HRV can be used to evaluate emotional and physical changes related to state anger and inappropriate anger expression.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate Heart Rate Variability (HRV) characteristics of patients with primary dysmenorrhea at the menstrual phase. Methods: 7 databases (Pubmed, Cochrane library, CNKI, RISS, KISS, OASIS, ScienceON) were searched for eligible studies published before 2021 December. The studies comparing HRV between patients with primary dysmenorrhea and controls were included. A random-effects model was used to evaluate differences of HRV parameters between patients with primary dysmenorrhea and controls. Results: 4 articles were included in this review based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. SDNN (Standard deviation of NN intervals), RMSSD (Square root of the mean squared difference of successive NN intervals), mean PR (Mean of pulse rate), LF (Low frequency), HF (High frequency), was the most frequently used as HRV parameters. RMSSD was significantly lower in patients with primary dysmenorrhea than controls. There was no statistically significant difference of other HRV parameters between patients with primary dysmenorrhea and controls. Conclusions: This study suggests that parasympathetic activity and overall functions of autonomic nervous system might be decreased in patients with primary dysmenorrhea at the menstrual phase. In the future, well-designed clinical studies using HRV and additional meta-analysis should be conducted to obtain a wealth of information about HRV characteristics of patients with primary dysmenorrhea.

  • To evaluate the effect of horticultural therapy (HT) on the emotional improvement of depressed patients, computer-based heart rate variability (HRV) was compared with self-report scale (SRS) known as existing subjective evaluation method. SRS included four test areas: mental stress scale (MSS), physical stress scale (PSS), Beck anxiety inventory (BAI), and Beck depression inventory (BDI). HRV was itemized into four parameters: standard deviation of the N-N intervals (SDNN), square root of mean squared difference of successive N-N intervals (RMSSD), total power (TP), and low-frequency/high-frequency ratio (LF/HF ratio). Thirty patients with depression at the same mental hospital participated in this study. 15 patients of the treatment group received HT once a week for three months, but the control group did not during the same period. As a result, the emotional improvement in treatment group was clearly identified through HRV as well as SRS. The significant difference was shown at three test areas (MSS, BAI, and BDI, $p$ < 0.001) in SRS and at one parameter (total power, $p$ < 0.05) in HRV. There was noticeable increase in SDNN, RMSSD, and LF/HF ratio in treatment group after HT activity, but no significant difference. Although all parameters of HRV did not show significance, the possibility of HRV as an objective evaluation method to HT was recognized in this study. These results also implied that HT was efficient in the mental and physical regeneration of the depressed patients in both subjective and objective evaluation methods.

  • Objectives : Alzheimer's disease(AD) and mild cognitive impairment(MCI) affect several nervous structures involved with the autonomic nervous system. Association between neuropsychiatric deficits and heart rate variability has been observed. But cardiac autonomic function in AD has been scarcely studied and the results reported are conflicting. We investigated autonomic function in normal control, MCI, AD using heart rate variability(HRV) technique. Methods : Time and frequency-domain variability of 5-min R-R interval series was comparatively evaluated in 26 normal control subjects, 22 MCI subjects and 34 AD subjects. Analysis of variance(ANOVA) was used to compare the differences across groups. Correlations between MMSE-KC and HRV components were performed using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results : No significant difference was observed among the groups in time, frequency-domain analysis of HRV(p>0.05). HRV were not found to be significantly correlated with the degree of cognitive impairment. Conclusions : There were no differences in HRV with MCI, AD subjects when compared with normal controls. Further investigation is required to use HRV technique as noninvasive parameters of MCI and AD.

  • Asthma is recognized as a complex disease resulting from interactions between multiple genetic and environmental factors. Accumulating evidence suggests that respiratory viral infections in early life constitute a major environmental risk factor for the development of childhood asthma. Respiratory viral infections have also been recognized as the most common cause of asthma exacerbation. The advent of molecular diagnostics to detect respiratory viruses has provided new insights into the role of human rhinovirus (HRV) infections in the pathogenesis of asthma. However, it is still unclear whether HRV infections cause asthma or if wheezing with HRV infection is simply a predictor of childhood asthma. Recent clinical and experimental studies have identified plausible pathways by which HRV infection could cause asthma, particularly in a susceptible host, and exacerbate disease. Airway epithelial cells, the primary site of infection and replication of HRV, play a key role in these processes. Details regarding the role of genetic factors, including ORMDL3, are beginning to emerge. This review discusses recent clinical and experimental evidence for the role of HRV infection in the development and exacerbation of childhood asthma and the potential underlying mechanisms that have been proposed.

  • Heat recovery ventilator(HRV) is recommended to improve indoor air quarlity (IAQ) and energy conservation in apartment houses. Recently, in Korea, HRV is produced from many manufacturers. However, there have been not so many experiences to apply HRV in apartment houses and verification on the performance such as heat exchange efficiency, carry-over rate, internal leakage, etc. have not been carried out sufficiently. So in this study, fan performance, heat exchange efficiency, air leakage, internal exhaust leakage, external leakage and sound level of HRV were examined for selected HRV models under domestic and international standard. Results of performance test, there were need to improve latent heat exchange efficiency and sound level of HRV.
