Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of breath-counting meditation (BCM) and deep breathing (DB) on heart rate variability (HRV). These breathing techniques have the characteristics of non-paced and self-controlled breathings, resulting in less increase of HRV. We also compared BCM and DB with usual breathing (UB) or relaxing breathing (RB) which can reveal the characteristics of those. Methods: 83 healthy volunteers sitting in chairs performed non-paced breathing; UB, RB, BCM, and DB each for 5 minutes. One minute of relaxation was permitted between breathings. Participants surfed the internet sitting in front of a computer during UB, while for RB, they remained steady with eyes closed. For BCM, they breathed inwardly counting from 1 to 10 repetitively, while they took a deep breath during DB. Physiological indices were simultaneously recorded with a biofeedback system. Results: Respiration rate, thoracic amplitude, and mean heart rate decreased in RB compared with UB, but there was no change in HRV. Respiration rate in BCM and DB was lower than that in UB or RB, and the amplitude of thorax or abdomen, and HRV all increased (p<0.05). However, mean heart rate and skin conductance decreased in BCM compared with UB (p<0.05), whereas those were no different between DB and UB. Conclusion: BCM, just concentrating mentally on breathing with counting each breath, can increase HRV with less sympathetic activation, while DB, actively moving thorax and abdomen for achieving the deepest respiration rate, can greatly raise HRV with the maintenance of mean vagal or sympathetic tone.

The aim of this study was to find correlation between EGG and HRV parameters in dyspeptic patients. 39 patients (male 8, female 31) were enrolled. EGG and HRV was measured in all patients. EGG parameters like % of gastric slow wave and power ratio were used to classify patients as normal or abnormal EGG groups. HRV parameters which were included TP (total power), LF(low frequency density), HF (high frequency density), and LF/HF ratio were compared between them. EGG parameters were compared among normal, sympathetic hyperactivity, and parasympathetic hyperactivity groups classified by LF/HF ratio. There was no difference in HRV parameters between normal and abnormal EGG groups. Comparing EGG parameters among normal, sympathetic hyperactivity, and parasympathetic hyperactivity groups, both sympathetic and parasympathetic hyperactivity groups had lower value of postprandial regularity of gastric slow wave than normal group. Abnormal value of LF/HF ratio(both sympathetic and parasympathetic hyperactivity) may be related with disturbance of electrical gastric activity in patients with dyspepsia.
Objectives This study aims to analyze Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in women after missed abortion compared with healthy women Methods We studied 35 women who visited Kang-Nam Kyung-Hee Korean Hospital after missed abortion from 01 January 2012 to 28 February 2015 (missed abortion group) and 35 normal women visiting medical examination center from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2014 (Normal Group). We measured HRV of each women and investigated the difference of HRV between two groups. Results The standard deviation of NN intervals (SDNN) in Missed abortion group is lower than normal group. The square root of the mean square difference of successive NNs (RMSSD) in Missed abortion group is lower than normal group. However there was no significant difference. Total Power (TP) and Low frequency power (LF) is significantly lower in Missed abortion group compared with normal group. High frequency power (HF), Very low frequency power (VLF) and LF/HF ratio in missed abortion group is lower than normal group. but There was no significant difference. Conclusions Missed abortion group is lower in function of overall autonomic nervous system, especially sympathetic nerve.

Purpose: Premenstrual syndrome(PMS) is a collection of physical, psychological and emotional symptoms related to a women's menstrual cycle. The symptoms are related with Autonomic Nervous system. The purpose of this study is to investigate the activity of Autonomic Nervous system in women with premenstrual syndrome(PMS) by using Heart Rate Variability(HRV). Methods: We studied 26 patients visiting ㅇㅇ hospital from 26th December 2005 to 26th April 2006. Activity of Autonomic Nervous system was assesed by means of Heart Rate Variability(HRV). The subjects were categorized in two groups, PMS group(10) and non-PMS group(16). We studied the difference of HRV between two groups by Mann-Whitney U-test using SPSS for windows (version 12.0). Results: SDNN of PMS group was non-significantly lower than non-PMS group. RMS-SD of PMS group was significantly lower than non-PMS group. Mean PR of PMS group was non-significantly higher than non-PMS group. TP, VLF, LF, HF norm of PMS group was non-significantly lower than non-PMS group. HF of PMS group was significantly lower than non-PMS group. LF norm, LF/HF ratio of PMS group was non-significantly higher than non-PMS group. Conclusion: The results suggest that PMS can be related to decreased activity of parasympathetic nervous system. HRV can be useful to diagnose PMS. The more studies to diagnose PMS would be needed.

Purpose: This study was performed to compare the mental health of school age children residing in urban and rural areas and to analyze the correlations between the subjective mental health indicators such as depression and attention deficit-hyperactivity behavior and heart rate variability (HRV) indicators. Methods: For this study, a convenience sample of one hundred and three children was recruited. Depression and attention deficit-hyperactivity behavior were measured using self-reported questionnaires and HRV indicators were measured using an electronic instrument. Results: Among the HRV parameters of the rural children, their normalized LF and the LF / HF were significantly lower than those of the urban children. The RMSSD and the normalized HF were statistically significantly higher. The level of depression showed a significant positive correlation with the normalized LF and LF/HF, but showed a negative correlation with the normalized HF. Also, the level of attention deficit-hyperactivity behavior was significantly correlated with the normalized LF, LF/HF, and the normalized HF. Conclusion: Based on the findings, we expect that HRV indicators can be applied to predict the level of depression and attention deficit-hyperactivity behavior in elementary school children.

Background: The change in the respiratory pattern has an influence on the change in the autonomic nervous system, which in turn has an influence on the EGG to measure a gastric activity. However, the study on the influence on the EGG parameters by respiratory control and on the correlation between the HRV and EGG through respiratory control has not been perform yet. Objective: It is to perform a series of experiments to find out how the EGG parameters are influenced by the controlled respiration and what correlation there may exist between the EGG and HRV to measure the change in the autonomic nervous system after controlled respiration. Methods: 1st Experiment: During a 15minutes' voluntary respiration, HRV was measured, and it was measured again during another 15 minutes' controlled respiration. 2nd Experiment: After an eight hours' fast, EGG was measured for a period of 30 minutes, and then after another 15 minutes' voluntary respiration, a test-meal was offered for 10 minutes and again EGG was measured. The next day, after an 8 hour's fast, EGG was measured for 30 minutes, and after a 15 minutes' controlled respiration and offered with a test-meal for 10 minutes and then EGG was measured again for 30 minutes. Results: 1. It was observed in all the channels that the power ratio increased more after controlled respiration than after voluntary respiration. No statistical significance, however, could be observed. 2. Through controlled respiration, the HF of HRV and the power ratio of EGG Channel 4 was negatively correlated, while the LF/HF of HRV and the power ratio of EGG channel 1 & 4 was positive correlated. Such correlations as mentioned above, however, could not be observed in HRV & EGG through voluntary respiration. Conclusions: 1. It was concluded that the increase in the power of gastric contractile after controlled respiration is bigger than the increase in the power of gastric contractile after voluntary respiration. 2. It was concluded that the gastric contractile power and sympathetic activity through controlled respiration was negatively correlated, while the gastric contractile power and parasympathetic activity through controlled respiration was positively correlated.
Objective : We investigated the effects of distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture on autonomic nervous system with the Heart Rate Variability(HRV) in adult man. as well as we tried to observe how distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture on the balance of the autonomic nervous system. Method : We investigated the effects of distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture on autonomic nervous system with the Heart Rate Variability(HRV) in adult man. as well as we tried to observe how distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture on the balance of the autonomic nervous system. 1 healthy volunteers consisted of 31 subjects in experiment(distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture) group and 30 subjects in control(Normal Saline) group. Study form was a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial. 31 subjects in experiment group were injected distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture at $GB_{21}$(Kyonjong) and 30 subjects in control group were injected Normal Saline at $GB_{21}$(Kyonjong). except of 2 subjects(in control group) who can't be measured and 11 subjects(7 in experiment group and 4 in control group) who move or make unforceable error during measuring. Finally 24 subject in experiment group and 24 subject in control group are studied. We measured HRV by PolyG-I on 7 times : before and after injection per 5 minutes during 30 minutes. The SPSS 10.0 for windows was used to analyze the data and the paired t-test(in group) and Student t-test(between two groups) were used to verify the result. Result : 1. After distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture injection, Mean HRV is significantly low only for first 5 minute, SDNN is significantly high after 5 minute, Complexity is significantly low after 5 minute, HRV index is significantly high after 10 minute and pNN50 is significantly low after 5 minute. 2. SDNN of distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture Group significantly increased from 20minute to 25minute, and pNN50 of distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture Group significantly decreased from 10minute to 15minute and 20 minute to 30 minute compared with those of Normal Saline group. 3. After distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture injection, Ln(TP), Ln(VLF) and Ln(LF) are significantly high after 5 minute, normalized LF is significantly high after 5 minute and normalized HF is significantly low after 5 minute. 4. Ln(TP) and Ln(VLF) of distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture Group significantly increased from 20minute to 25 minute compared with those of Normal Saline group. Conclusion : The results suggest that distilled Wild Ginseng Herbal Acupuncture in healthy adult man tend to activate the autonomic nervous system and sympathetic nervous system compared to Normal Saline within normal range.
Objectives Advanced researches on the relationship between obesity and heart rate variability (HRV), heretofore, focused on characteristics of HRV depending on the state of obesity. However, the previous researches have not quantified predictive power of HRV toward the obesity-related variables, which is rather more meaningful for clinicians who regularly treat obese patients. Hence, we designed a research to investigate whether HRV could predict serum levels of obesity-related metabolites. Methods Ninety obese premenopausal women meeting the inclusion criteria were recruited. The HRV test, blood sampling, and measurement of physical traits were conducted. Multiple regression analysis of the measurement data was carried out, putting obesity-related metabolites (insulin, glucose, triglyceride, hs-CRP, HDL, LDL, total cholesterol) as outcome variables and the others as predictors. To select appropriate predictive variables, the Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) was applied. Normality and homoskedasticity of residuals for each model were tested to identify if there were any violations of the regression analysis's basic assumption. Logarithm transformation was used for the values of the concentration of metabolites and the HRV. Results The regression model including Total Power (TP) value and BMI had significant predictive power for serum insulin concentration (F(2, 88)=835.7, p<0.001, $R^2=0.95$). The regression coefficient of ln (TP) was -0.1002. However, it was not sure if the HRV could predict concentrations of other metabolites. Conclusions The results suggest that the Total Power (TP) value of the HRV can predict the level of serum insulin. If the BMI could be assumed as being constant, when the TP value is multiplied by n, the predicted change of insulin could be drawn by multiplying $n^{-0.1002}$. The uncertainty of this model can be assumed as approximately 5%.
In March 1997, a new rhabdovirus was isolated from moribund cultured Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in sea water tank and cage culture systems in Kyung-Nam and Chun-Nam province, Korea. At temperature $15^{\circ}C$ the virus replicated and induced cytopathic effects (CPE), which progressed to eventual cytolysis, in susceptible cell lines, including RTG-2 and EPC. The CHES-214 cell line was refractory. Virus particles were bullet-shaped and measured $70nm{\times}100$ to 150 nm in size. The isolate was sensitive to pH 3, to diethyl ether, and to heat ($50^{\circ}C$ 5 min, $60^{\circ}C$ 1 min). Viral replication was not inhibited by $10^{-4}$ M 5-iododeoxyuridine. Virus infectivity was reduced by anti-HRV (8401-H) rabbit serum, but can not reduced by antisera against infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV), chum salmon reovirus (CSV), retrovirus of salmonid (RVS) and infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV). HRV virus antigen was detected by fluorescent antibody test (FAT) in the cytoplasm of infected EPC cell. Purified isolates virions were composed of: polymerase (L), glycoprotein (G), nucleoprotein (N) and 2 matrix proteins (M1 and M2). Based upon their relative mobilities, the estimated molecular weights of the proteins were: L, 160 kDa; G, 55 kDa; N, 45 kDa; M1, 26 kDa; and M2, 22 kDa.
