  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the planning characteristics of outdoor space in apartment complexes in terms of child-care environment. We selected 8 apartment complexes in Cheongju, within three years from construction, of small and medium-sized apartments ($60-85m^2$) where a large number of families with young children are presumed to reside in. As a result of the study, it was found that whereas the factors that can be quantified such as the floor height differences, the angles of ramps, and the number of the rest facilities are excellent, the qualitative part which cannot be easily quantified such as the location and direction of the rest facility and play materials should be improved a lot. And the following improvements were suggested; separating the pedestrian passage from the vehicle road in the main entrance of the complex, utilizing the piloti for infant caring, making the entrance area of apartment safe for pedestrians from vehicles, reallocating resting spaces, redesigning resting spaces safer to infants, building or reallocating existing booths at the stops of kindergarten buses, redesigning the square safer from vehicles with shades, making it possible for guardians to watch infants in playing field from the resting space, allocating natural environments essential for child development.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the functional conformity based on the analysis of the spatial connectivity of block housing using space syntax. Three cases were selected which have important meanings in 1920s. The properties of spatial configuration were derived from an urban-context approach and without urban context analysis, and spatial connectivity and functional conformity were analyzed using references. The results of the study revealed that the arrangement of block housing were different from one another notwithstanding their similar layout characteristics. The relationships between urban streets and housing complexes were identified, and the public spaces were being arranged as semi-public spaces, whereas blocks as private spaces by separating functions. This study provides the implications for the planning of low rise-high density housings by means of analyzing the spatial connectivity of the spatial layout characteristics of European block housing, recognizing the relationships between urban communities and housing complexes.

  • This study suggested the necessity of introducing the future-oriented new industrial complex as a way to enhance the competitiveness of the industrial complex in response to the industrial ecosystem change caused by the 4th industrial revolution. To evaluate the location suitability for the new industrial complex, location indices were developed in this study. The flexibility of location and connectivity to neighboring areas of the future-oriented new industrial complexes were the focused subjects of this study. In-depth expert consultation and Delphi survey were conducted to construct an index system and to measure the indices. Afterwards, the AHP analysis was conducted to elucidate the weighting by indicators. As a result, the indicators of industrial innovation environment were the most important in the major category. In addition, the convenience of workers, especially urban environment, was analyzed as an important factor for success of the future-oriented new industrial complex. The indicators which are closely related to the concept and purpose of the future-oriented new industrial complex turned out to have the higher weight compared to other indicators. From the point of view of the developers of the industrial complexes or tenant companies, the implications for deriving suitable locations for development of industrial complexes among urban under-utilized sites are suggested. Furthermore, It is expected that the government will be able to apply the development system to stimulate the development of these new industrial complexes and to prepare guidelines for selecting locations.

  • This study tried to prove why a low-rise residential block is more vitalized than in a superblock consisted of an apartment housing complex. To do this, two adjacent superblocks in Yeoksam 2-dong were selected as a case study among superblocks of residential area in Gangnam, Seoul. It adopted the concept of 'complexity', 'Osmosis', 'Vitality' and 'Permeability' for evaluation indexes to measure street vitality. As a result, four indexes were clearly higher in low-density residential superblocks than apartment housing complex superblocks. First, the superblocks for apartment housing complexes showed a lower 'complexity' because large-scale parcels for an apartment housing complex reduces a possibility for various land uses. Second, smaller blocks improved "osmosis" compared to larger blocks, and the larger the block, the less likely it is that buildings and streets penetrate activity. Third, as the apartment complex block became larger, the number of accesses decreased. Thus, it did not provide vitality to the streets. Fourth, high permeability was shown in the low-density superblocks, while that of the superblock consisted of apartment housing complexes was very low because the entrance of the complexes entrance is closed to the public. The results of this study demonstrated that an apartment housing complex may hamper street vitality and deteriorate the quality of urban environments.

  • With rapid industrialization and urbanization, numerous cities are faced with urban slum phenomenon combined with housing shortage fueled by population explosion. In Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, the government hereby embarked on supply of public housing to resolve such pending issue. This study aims to understand the periodic changes of public housing as a common basis for basic housing policies with analysis specific features of site plan, block layout, and unit plans. For this purposes, the filed survey during January, 2011 were proceeded. We hereby visited and surveyed a total of 40 apartment complexes for the 1970s~the 2000s (10 complexes respectively on a decade basis). Consequently, Malaysian public apartments prove to offer a very uniform pattern based upon standard plans. Their early plans aren't fairly distincted from those of other countries, but their layouts of plan become differentiated compared with other nations as they actively apply a ventilator called 'air well' in response to tropical climate amid the change of times. This study is expected to broaden our understanding of Malaysia's unique housing culture and lifestyle.

The study selected residents in Ulsan, who were over twenty and had an interest in living in a single-family housing. A survey was conducted from September 11, 2008 to September 25, 2008. The sample consisted of 364 persons who are currently live in Ulsan metropolitan area. The results are as following. About two thirds of the sample had the desire to live in a single-family housing. Moving into a single-family housing had financial preparation as the greatest issue. When moving into a single-family housing, the convenience of the residential district was the greatest consideration, whether or not it is a green environment, pollution level, etc. The potential buyers valued environment-friendly features and also had a very strong desire to own their own house. Many of them wanted to design and build their own single-family housing within a budget of 100-200 million KRW. In terms of the location, there was a higher preference for the riverside or lakeside rural areas outside the city. In terms of size, the preference was less than $330m^2$, which includes $99-132m^2$ for residential. When considering a single-family housing the direction was the most important feature, along with eco-friendly and safer materials and equipments. When building the single-family housing the potential buyers considered the community spaces first with a preference for having three bedrooms and two bathrooms. For the exterior, they wanted a unique shape of roof and there were high preferences for brown and beige colors. In terms of housing complexes, the potential buyers preferred individual unit types over complexes. If they preferred housing complexes, they wanted the cluster form complex with about 10-30 units. The complex also required a park-like setting with a guard system, which shows that convenience and safety were the most important features. In terms of complex management, they considered environmental management as the most important feature. The potential buyers were willing to pay belw 200,000 KRW, which showed their desire to minimize financial burdens.
