  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the compensation of rurul women receive instead of their physical participation and contribution to their households. I am specifically concerned with the rural women's economic status in relation to their decision making power on household and agricultural economic issues as well as property held in their names. The data of 166 rural men and women in Jyungpook Province are collected by using questionnaires in June 1998. The findings of this study are as follows; 1) Rural women contribute average 53% of their husbands' contribution to agricultural labor which is on average 43.0% of total annual household income. 2) The decision making power on major economic issues remains still very low among rural women. Rural women are still excluded from the possibility of actually owning assets such as property,. Only 189% had assets under their names for assets. 3) The significant factors concerning the rural women's decision making power on econo ic issues are gender-role attitudes of rural women and the husband's judgement of how much their wives contribute to the annual household income. 4) the major factors which influence rural women owning household assets are the decision making power on economical matters contribution to the annual household income and each woman's education level.

  • This study attempts to examine family attitudes and gender role divisions of married women in contemporary Vietnam and Korea. Drawing data from the 2003 Vietnam Family Study and the 2005 Korean Marriage and Fertility Study, this study investigated 1) attitudes of married women toward marriage, cohabitation, divorce, and having children, 2) decision making on household expenditures, and 3) household work division between husband and wife. The results showed that married Korean women were less inclined toward traditional family attitudes regarding marriage and children than married Vietnamese women. Decision on routine household expenditures was made and household work was done mostly by the wife in the two countries. In comparison, married Vietnamese men took more responsibilities for important financial decisions and child education than married Korean men. These overall findings imply that patriarchical family and gender role norms were preserved to larger extent in contemporary Vietnam than in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of wives' economic contributions and sex-role attitudes on couples' decision-making for use in family education and to improve stable couple relationships. This study targeted 286 married women who have a child or children. The main results of this study indicate that almost half of the participants showed that their couple decision-making, economic resource contributions and sex-role attitudes were husband-dominated. Additionally, the participants' most modern sex-role attitudes were toward gender stereotypes, though the most conservative attitudes were toward women and men's household lives. The variables that distinguished between husband-dominated and equality couples were age, education level, spouse's average income and resource evaluation; related, age, education level, spouse's average income, contribution toward household management and the occupational life of the woman were the variables that distinguished between husband-dominated and wife-dominated couples. This study also revealed the variables that affect couples' decision- making, demonstrating the necessity of considering several variables in the approach to the decision-making process of individual couples.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the role of information and communication technology and women's empowerment in contraceptive discontinuation in Indonesia. Methods: The study used data from the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey and monthly contraceptive calendar data. A Gompertz proportional hazards model was used for analysis. Results: The 12-month contraceptive discontinuation rate was higher among women who had used the Internet in the past year, women who were mobile phone owners, and women who reported having fully participated in household decision-making than among their counterparts. These factors significantly impacted the risk of contraceptive discontinuation in Indonesia, even after controlling for contraceptive method, age, parity, contraceptive intent, education, work status, place of residence, and wealth status. Conclusions: After adjustment for the control variables, a higher risk of contraceptive discontinuation was associated with having used the Internet in the past year, owning a mobile phone, and not participating in household decision-making. Higher contraceptive discontinuation risk was also associated with using contraceptive pills, older age, lower parity, intent of spacing births, more education, current unemployment, and rural residence, and the risk was also significantly higher for those in the lowest household wealth quintile than for those in the fourth household wealth quintile. The association of contraceptive discontinuation with the use of modern information and communication technology and relatively disempowerment in household decision-making may imply that information regarding family planning and contraception should be conveyed via social media as part of setting up an eHealth system. This must include a strong communication strategy to empower and educate women in contraceptive decision-making.

  • Recently, the form of traditional families has been disintegrated due to low birthrate, aging, declining marriage, individualism, etc. In particular, the number of single households has increased due to the shift to a low-growth advanced economic structure, women's social participation, diversification of lifestyles, and so on. According to the National Statistical Office, the number of single households living alone by 2015 is estimated to be about 5,060,000 households, which is estimated to account for 34.3% of all households, which has greatly increased compared with about 660,000 (6.9%) in 1985. However, the housing market has not been able to respond to such social changes. Therefore, in this research, we presented a plan to visualize the public data of single household in Seoul city and prediction result of occupancy shape for the purpose of supporting decision making of single household consumers.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the change of agricultural labor participation and decision-making involvement of rural women in Korea from 1960s to 1990s. For analysis of these changes, I used the data surveyed and collected by different researchers during those times. During last 40 years, rural society and the mode of agricultural production rapidly changed according to the development of Korean industry. Agricultural labor participation of rural women increased since the mid 1970s. Their agricultural labor expanded into full ranges of farming. Their decision-making involvement also expanded into all divisions of farming. However, they did not have decision making power as much as they contributed to farm labor The expansion of rural women's labor within the sphere of farm production has not substantially altered the decision-making power structure within the farm household.

However, conjugal role structure in the purchasing decision process differed by phased of process : (1) Wives involvement in the phase of problem recognition was greater than their involvement in information seeking and evaluating, but husbands' involvement a in the phase of information seeking and evaluating was slightly greater than their involvement in problem recognition. (2) Husbands' involvement in the phase of making the final decision was far greater than their involvement I information seeking and evaluating. (3) Wives' involvement in the actually making of the purchase was far greater than their involvement in making the final decision. 2) Only one among conjugal demographic factors was significantly related to conjugal role structure. • Migration studies that assume that decision making is done on an individual basis is overlooking the importance of the family factor. Considering that must people belong to families, it is more appropriate to view migration decision from the perspective of the family. This study analyzes the household migration decision whereby the alternatives are to stay, 10 undertake family migration or to undertake single migration of a member. In developing a conceptual model of household migration decision, it is assumed that the household's objective is to maximize household income which is a function of individual members' earnings. The benefits and costs of household migration and individual migration are identified and the household chooses the migration strategy that maximizes expected household income. When household members have conflicting earning prospects in the potential destination, the household considers single migration of the member with the best earning potentials. However, lone migration by a household member involves cost of family separation which is both monetary and psychic, and this study shows that lone migration is undertaken only when its net gains to the family are greater than the separation cost of the family. The major benefit of choosing single migration is the retention of home base in the place of origin which can serve as an insurance against the uncertainty of obtaining a job in the destination, the benefit that is unavailable in family migration. The conceptual analysis shows how a household's migration decision would depend on its members' economic roles and prospects in the destination. Besides the economic variables, social and life cycle variables of the family translate into separation costs and benefits of migration. This study indicates that one - earner family in low economic status but with good earning prospects and high separation costs is more likely to choose family migration over single migration.

The data were gathered from 1,870 rural households through interviews with structured questionnaire in the 187 rural communities sampled by multi-staged cluster stratified sampling method in November 2005. A total of 1,106 farm households including householder and spouse participated in the interview. The results of this study were as follows: First, in general, mainly householder made decision-making in the areas of dealing with real estate and selling farm products, while spouse decided in the areas of choosing television channel and deciding living expenses. Second, there were no significant differences of patterns by age, education and income level. Third, decision-making patterns were significantly different by sex and family type. According to the results of the study, in farm household, 'pattern of mainly householder or husband decision-making' was high yet as regarding agricultural decision making.
