Purpose - The purpose of this study was to investigate several household characteristics related to panel attrition, examining how they may have conditioned the panel data in the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS). Design/methodology/approach - We studied the cause of the differences in household income between the original panel and the new panel in KOWEPS. Findings - To summarize our findings, whereas it is highly likely that a low-income household or a household without health insurance will remain in the panel, it is highly likely that a high-income household or a household of more than three members will be taken off the panel. Research implications or Originality - The proportion of low-income household tends to decrease over the years, which appears to result from an overall increase in household income. Such changes are reflected in the pattern in which older panels have higher estimates of household income than newer panels.

This study investigates to investigate the ageing effect on household demand for clothing, food, housing and medical care commodities in Korea using a demand system model. The cross-sectional and time-series data from Statistics Korea on urban household expenditures and age projection analyzed household demands of consumption commodities. The household head age and elderly population ratio were employed for proxy variables of ageing. Ageing variable elasticities of commodity demands were estimated. Study results show that ageing variables significantly influenced on a household demand for commodities; clothing and food consumption decreases; however, housing and medical care consumption increases with ageing. The elasticities of total consumption expenditures and price variables were estimated in the demand analysis; these two variables significantly impacted almost all of the household consumption for the studied commodities. This study provides an opportunity to examine how ageing influences household consumption for clothing, food, housing and medical care commodities as Korean society experiences a rapid ageing. It is also meaningful that this study conducted a quantitative measuring of the household demands for commodities that was different from past research on the household consumption expenditures for commodities.

The research was conducted on 354 housewives in Seoul during the end of January and the beginning of March, 1986. As for the measurement of the instrument, questionnaire with 46 items was made by investigator. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean and t-test, F-test, Scheffe-test, Pearson-r. The results were summarized as follows; 1) Among the independent variables, the ages of housewives, durations of marriage, psychologica satisfaction were variables to have influence on the housewives consciousness towark household work. 2) Among the independent variable,s the socio-economic status, durations of marriage, psychological satisfaction were variables to have influence on the satisfaction of household work. 3) There were strong positive correlationship between the housewives consciousness and the satisfaction of household work. As a result, it is necessary to minimize the repetition and the overload of house-hold chores through the rationalization of household work and also to divide householdwork properly to family members. We let the housewives feel that her ability can be obtained from the household work. Especially the housewives must have a clear and a high level of consciousness of the household work an expect to receive high value of her household work from the family members. In order to do so, it seems to be important that housewives makes on great effort to have a positive value system and attitudes toward the consciousness and satisfaction of household work. We also must develop those factors through school and home education.

The relationship between household attributes and trip generation can only be found in Seoul Metropolitan Household Travel Survey, which has been implemented every 5 years. However, various household attributes' impact on trip generation has not been analyzed closely. This paper compared and analyzed those impact. The results could be useful when trip generation models are studied in the future. They are as follows. The household size should be an important classification criteria when household trip generation is estimated. The traditional assumption that the relationship between household auto ownership and trip generation is positive and linear correlation should be reconsidered. Weekday travel data only did not showed that housing type has an influence on trip generation. Household income is unrelated with trip generation among single-person household, while multi-person household is related strongly. However, when trips are classified by purpose, impact of household income on trip generation are varied by trip purpose. Especially, the increase in single-person household can not be overlooked when trip generation is forecasted.
The instability in the current financial market caused consumers a lot of difficulties in their financial decision making. The purpose of this study is to classify the changes in household portfolios during the economic crisis under IMF-trusteeship (IMF Crisis hereafter), and to examine the characteristics of the households according to the types of household portfolio changes. The data were taken from 1996 and 1999 Korean Household Panel Studies, and 1,293 households were selected for the final analysis. Methods of analysis included frequencies, percentages, Chi-square tests, F-tests, and t-tests. Major findings are as follows: 1. In the midst of the financial market changes during the period of the IMF crisis, consumers tended to manage their household portfolio differently according to their household characteristics. 2. The changes of household portfolio can be classified into two different types: the changed type (44.4%) and the unchanged type(55.6%). There are significant differences in the level of wealth, family life cycle stage, housing tenure, and the household head's job, between the changed type and the unchanged type. The family members of the unchanged type are more likely to be older and relatively wealthy compared with the families in the changed type. 3. The changes of household portfolio can be further classified into six different types: the unchanged-liquidity type (21%), the unchanged-multiplication type (24.6%), the unchanged-insurance type (9.8%), the changed-to-liquidity type (13.9%), the changed-to-multiplication type (13.0%), and the changed-to-insurance type (17.5%). There are significant differences in income level, wealth level, family life cycle stage, housing tenure, and the job of household head among the six types of changes.
The purpose of this study is to grasp the retention status of household items for children and the real condition of storage targeting dual career families of living in 3-bedroom apartment. To do this, a field survey was conducted by having subjects as 30 households of conforming with the requirements. This led to understanding kinds and quantities of household items for children inside the residence and to surveying the present status on household items of being stored by room, thereby having analyzed a difference in household items according to children's age. The survey results are as follows. First, the household items for children within dwelling were indicated to be totally 145 detailed items. In the quantities of the detailed items, a great difference was shown by age in clothes, books, teaching aids, toys, and stationery. Second, as a result of examining a place of being stored the household items for children, the household items in great quantities were found in living room, room 1, and room 3 even in addition to room 2 that is children's room. Third, in consequence of looking at the storage status of household items for children by age level, it could be known that very different household items are being used depending on children's age, and that a place of storing household items is much varied by age. This outcome could lead to being capable of knowing that one-child families living in 3-bedroom apartment are using every room focusing on child, and that child's household items are being disorderedly stored in each space, thereby requiring the systematic storage plans so much that reflect the real situation.
The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of households with a negative cash flow. The Household Budget Survey conducted in 2000, 2005, and 2010 by the Bureau of Statistics in South Korea were used for this study. The households used in this study were divided into four groups according to their income levels; they were categorized the lowest, low, middle, and high income groups. This study made several findings regarding households with a negative/positive cash flow. Firstly, the demographic and economic characteristics were different between those who have a negative cash flow and those with a positive cash flow. A female household head, a household head age 65 and older, a household head with a lower educational attainment, an unemployed household head, and the presence of a child/children in schools were related with the household deficit. Secondly, the households with a positive cash flow had a higher income level compared to the households with a negative cash flow, while the households with a negative cash flow had a much higher consumption level compared to the households with a positive cash flow. Thirdly, the household deficit to total income ratio of the lowest income group was higher when compared to any other income group. Lastly, the multivariate statistics showed that households including a child/children in schools are more likely to be a household with a negative cash flow. Especially, the expenditures on education and transportation were related with the likelihood of a household deficit.
This study identifies the relation between recognition relatively deprivation and consumption patterns. The data used were the seventh Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS). The final sample of 1,597 households was selected based on several sampling steps standard weights suggested by KOWEPS were applied. The final sample was subdivided into household recognizing relatively deprivation (51.7%) and non-household recognizing relatively deprivation (48.3%) per level of subjective income and objective income. We derived six consumption patterns from the cluster analysis as per consumption ratio: transportation dominant consumption pattern, essential consumption pattern, other dominant consumption pattern, care attention consumption pattern, private transfer consumption pattern, and education dominant consumption pattern. The results of this study are as follows. The analysis of the determinants of recognizing relatively deprivation in regards to question one found that the household was likely to be relatively deprived when: the head of a household was older, a household had a dual income, children and more total assets then those assessed 1 year ago compared to household living conditions, result of comparing the consumption patterns difference between household recognizing relatively deprivation and non-household recognizing relatively deprivation indicated that household recognizing relatively deprivation was more likely to belong to the transportation dominant consumption pattern, other dominant consumption pattern, and private transfer consumption pattern. The multinomial logistic analysis conducted to understand the determinants affecting the consumption patterns of household recognizing relatively deprivation indicated differences in demographic characteristics, household-related variables, financial variables and perception of economic conditions.
