  • Drilling is one of the most important operations performed in the machining industry. And the material of the workpiece has a profound effect on the tool life, the surface finish produced and the overall economy of the process. Hot-rolled high strength steels have been used for automobile structural material, owing to high hardness and machinability of the material. However, in the drilling of hot-rolled high strength steels, the current knowledge of tool wear and machinability are insuf-ficient. There, it is desirable to monitor drill wear status and hole quality changes during the hole drilling process. Accordingly, this paper deals with the cutting characteristics of the hot-rolled high strength steels using common HSS drill. The performance variables include the drilling thrust, torque and drill wear data obtained from drilling experiments con-ducted on the workpiece. Also drill were is measured by acoustic emission system and computer vision system.

  • As one way of weight saving of the vehicle, 1-piece typed lower control arm has been developed using high strength hot rolled steel sheet. In order to overcome the edge splitting problem during edge flanging or burring process, HER (hole expansion ratio) value of steel sheet was primarily considered. The strength grade of steel sheet and the shape were optimized utilizing Taguchi method.

  • Recently, hot rolled galvanized steel is widely used in automotive parts. As the paradigm of the automotive market has changed from fossil fuel vehicle to electric vehicle, the automotive industry needs more high-strength steels to reduce weights of automobiles. However, because high-strength steel contains high solute carbon, it is expected to have a risk of stretcher-strain on the surface due to dislocation trapping by solute [C] and [N]. Generally, galvanized steel is supposed to pass through a furnace around the temperature of Zinc pot to increase material temperature. Otherwise, the inhibition layer could not be formed. However, solute carbon and nitrogen are volatile enough to move around the furnace temperature. Moreover, the ratio of ferrite phase and precipitated Fe3C can be variable, resulting in yield point elongation related to the stretcher strain. Furthermore, the quality of the galvanized surface can be affected by a high temperature of the furnace. Although a relatively hot rolled galvanizing line furnace has a lower temperature than an annealing line furnace, it can affect various quality aspects. In other words, this paper aims to determine how these phenomena appear concerning furnace temperature.

  • The machinability of material was evaluated using high speed steel drill on hot-rolled high strength steel. Cutting resistance and tool wear were investigated by drilling experimentation. When the steel-board specimens were drilled in industrial condition, the relationship between average of thrust and cutting resistance was random because of slip of chuck and strain of workpiece. The primary objective of this study is to develop the strategy of analysis that can detect drilling states in industrial condition and such strategy is programmed with visual C++. The developed program can analyze thrust of initial rising zone. The result is obtained that thrust of rising zone is closely related to tool wear in despite of industrial condition.

Characteristics of STS 304 Rolled Steel by High Temperature Low Cycle Fatigue (고온 저주기 피로에 의한 STS 304 압연강재의 특성연구)

  • In this study, strain-controlled low cycle fatigue test for hot rolled STS304 steel was carried out at $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. High temperature fatigue test was done using an electric furnace attached on the hydraulic fatigue test machine. The results of this study show that STS304 hot rolled steel has excellent static strength and fatigue characteristics. The hysteresis loop at half life was obtained in order to calculate the elastic and plastic strain. Also, Relationship between strain amplitude and fatigue life was examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of STS304 steel by Coffin-Manson equation.

  • Local buckling can be ignored for hot-rolled ordinary strength steel equal angle compression members, because the width-to-thickness ratios of the leg don't exceed the limit value. With the development of steel structures, Q420 high strength steel angles with the nominal yield strength of 420 MPa have begun to be widely used in China. Because of the high strength, the limit value of the width-to-thickness ratio becomes smaller than that of ordinary steel strength, which causes that the width-to-thickness ratios of some hot-rolled steel angle sections exceed the limit value. Consequently, local buckling must be considered for 420 MPa steel equal angles under axial compression. The existing research on the local buckling of high strength steel members under axial compression is briefly summarized, and it shows that there is lack of study on the local buckling of high strength steel equal angles under axial compression. Aiming at the local buckling of high strength steel angles, this paper conducts an axial compression experiment of 420MPa high strength steel equal angles, including 15 stub columns. The test results are compared with the corresponding design methods in ANSI/AISC 360-05 and Eurocode 3. Then a finite element model is developed to analyze the local buckling behavior of high strength steel equal angles under axial compression, and validated by the test results. Following the validation, a finite element parametric study is conducted to study the influences of a range of parameters, and the analysis results are compared with the design strengths by ANSI/AISC 360-05 and Eurocode 3.

  • For application of advanced high strength hot-rolled steels (i.e. DP590, DP780) to automotive lightweight chassis parts, various technologies from design to forming test, optimization of welding condition and investigation of coating properties were tried. The target part of this study was automotive rear sub frame and we could make $16.8\%$ weight reduction by reducing the material thickness and optimizing the design. In addition, the formability and weldability of the newly developed AHSS, DP780, were evaluated.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of High Strength and Stretch-Flangeability Hot-Rolled Steels (고강도-신장플랜지성 열연강의 미세조직 및 기계적 성질)

  • Research into the development of high strength (1 GPa) and superior formability, such as total elongation (10%), and stretch-flangeability (50%) in hot-rolled steel was conducted with a thermomechanically controlled hot-rolling process. To improve the overall mechanical properties simultaneously, low-carbon steel using precipitation hardening of Ti-Nb-V multimicroalloying elements was employed. And, ideal microstructural characteristics for the realization of balanced mechanical properties were determined using SEM, EBSD, and TEM analyses. The developed steel, 0.06C-2.0Mn-0.5Cr-0.2(Ti + Nb + V), consisted of ferrite as the matrix phase and second phase of granular bainite with fine carbides (20-50 nm) in both phases. The significant factor of the microstructural characteristics that affect stretch-flangeability was found to be the microstructural homogeneity. The microstructural homogeneity, manifest in such characteristics as low localization of plastic strain and internally stored energy, was identified by grain average misorientation method, analyzed by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and hardness deviation between the phases. In summar, a hot-rolled steel having a composition 0.06C-2.0Mn-0.5Cr-0.2(Ti + Nb + V) demonstrated a tensile strength of 998 MPa, a total elongation of 19%, and a hole expansion ratio of 65%. The most important factors to satisfy the mechanical property were the presence of fine carbides and the microstructural homogeneity, which provided low hardness deviation between the phases.

Influence of Al, Cu and Ni Additions on Mechanical Properties of Hot-Rolled Fe-9Mn-0.2C Medium-Manganese Steels

  • The microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-rolled Fe-9Mn-0.2C medium-manganese steels with different Al, Cu, and Ni contents were investigated in this study. Based on the SEM, XRD, and EBSD analysis results, the microstructure was composed of martensite, band-type delta ferrite, and retained austenite phases depending on the Al, Cu, and Ni additions. The tensile and Charpy impact test results showed that the sole addition of Al reduced significantly impact toughness by the presence of delta-ferrite and the decrease of austenite stability although it increased yield strength. However, the combined addition of Al and Cu or Ni provided the best combination of high yield strength and good impact toughness because of solid solution strengthening and increased austenite stability.

A Study on the Stretch-flangeability of Hot-Rolled High Strength Steel with Ferrite-Bainite Duplex Microstructure (페라이트-베이나이트 복합조직 고강도 열연강판의 신장플랜지 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The effect of microstructures on the strength-flangeability of Nb bearing hot-rolled high strength steel was investigated in order to improve the strength-flangeability of conventional TS 580MPa grades HSLA steel for the automotive wheel disc. The low temperature coiling method using 3-step controlled cooling pattern after hot rolling was effective to produce the Nb-bearing high strength steel with the polygonal ferrite and bainite duplex microstructures. It was suggested that the suppressed precipitation of grain boundary cementites and the decreased hardness difference between ferrite matrix and bainite cause the excellent stretch-flangeability of ferrite-bainite duplex microstructure steel. Therefore, the formation and propagation of microcracks were suppressed relative to the conventional HSLA steel with ferrite and pearlite microstructure. In addition, the elongation was improved as compared with that of hot-rolled steel sheets using conventional early cooling pattern because the volume fraction of polygonal ferrite was increased.
