NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE HYDROGEN-STEAM BEHAVIOR IN THE APR1400 CONTAINMENT DURING A HYPOTHETICAL TOTAL LOSS OF FEED WATER ACCIDENT (APR1400의 급수완전상실사고 시 격납건물 내에서 수소와 수증기의 3차원 거동에 대한 수치해석)

  • During a hypothetical severe accident in a nuclear power plant (NPP), hydrogen is generated by the active reaction of fuel-cladding and steam in the reactor pressure vessel and released with steam into the containment. In order to mitigate hydrogen hazards possibly occurred in the NPP containment, hydrogen mitigation system (HMS) is usually adopted. The design of the next generation NPP (APR1400) designed in Korea specifies 26 passive autocatalytic recombiners and 10 igniters installed in the containment for the hydrogen mitigation. in this study, the analysis of the hydrogen and steam behavior during a total lose of feed water (TLOFW) accident in the APR1400 containment has been conducted by using the CFD code GASFLOW. During the accident, a huge amount of hot water, steam, and hydrogen is released in the in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST). The current design of the APR1400 includes flap-type dampers at the IRWST vents which are operated depending on the pressure difference between inside and outside of the IRWST. it was found that the flaps strongly affects the flow structure of the steam and hydrogen in the containment. The possibilities of a flame acceleration and transition from deflagration to detonation (DDT) were evaluated by using Sigma-Lambda criteria. Numerical results indicate the DDT possibility could be heavily reduced in the IRWST compartment when the flaps are installed.

Flow Boiling Heat Transfer Characteristics of R22 Alternative Refrigerants in a Horizontal Smooth Tube (R22 대체냉매의 수평원관내 흐름비등 열전달 특성)

  • Flow boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R22, R134a, R407C, and R410A were measured for a horizontal plain tube. The test section was made of a copper tube of 8.8mm inner diameter and 1000mm length respectively. The refrigerant was heated by passing hot water through an annulus surrounding the test section. All tests were performed at a fixed refrigerant saturation temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ with mass fluxes of 100~300 kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s. HTCs were measured by two methods: the direct wall temperature measurement method and the indirect Wilson plot method. Experimental results showed that the Wilson plot method was affected greatly by the external test conditions and yielded inconsistent results. For the mass flux of 100kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s, HTCs were almost constant regardless of the quality for a given refrigerant HTCs of R134a and R407C were similar to those of R22 while those of R410A were 60% higher than those of R22. For the mass fluxes of 200 and 300kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s, HTCs of R407C were almost the same as those of R22, while HTCs of R134a and R410A were 12-13% and 20~23% higher than those of R22 respectively. For pure refrigerant, Shah\`s correlation yielded a good agreement with the measured data both qualitatively and quantitatively.

A Comparison Study on Flow-Friction Characteristic of Polymer Solution and Surfactant as Drag Reduction Additive (고분자물질 및 계면활성제의 유동마찰 저감 특성 비교 연구)

  • The drag reduction(DR) for Betaine+Amin and Xantan Gum as kinds of surfactant and Polyacrylamide as kinds of polymer solution according to the fluid velocity, temperature and surfactant concentration were compared experimentally. For this study, two kinds of experimental apparatus for short time and long time measurement were established. Each experimental appratus was equipped with hot water storage tanks, pumps, testing pipe network, flowmeter, two pressure gauges and data logging system was built for them. Results showed that Betaine+Amin and Xanthan Gum as kinds of surfactant had appeared optimal DR around 200-500 ppm and their DR tended to be decreased when flow velocity increased but Polyacrylamide as kinds of polymer solution showed the opposite trend to be increased when flow velocity increased. The both of them showed above 40% DR in the case of better condition by the short term measurement. But Polyacrylamide as kinds of polymer solution showed more degradation than Betaine+Amin and Xanthan Gum as kinds of surfactant by the long term measurement. As a result, Betaine+Amin and Xanthan Gum as kinds of surfactant showed better materials to use to the district heating system.

  • This paper analyzed the behavior of fixed-bed catalytic reactor (FBCR) which synthesizing maleic anhydride(MA) from the selective oxidation of n-butane. The behavior of FBCR describing convection-diffusion-reaction mechanism is examined by using two-dimensional pseudohomogeneous plug-flow transient model, with the kinetics of Langmuir-Hinshelwood type. Prediction model is composed by optimum parameter estimation from temperature profile, yield and conversion of single FBCR on operating condition variations of Sharma's pilot-plant experiment. A double FBCR with same yield and conversion for single FBCR generated a $8.96^{\circ}C$ lower hot spot temperature than a single FBCR. We could predict parametric sensitivity according to the variation of possible operating condition (temperature, concentration, volumetric flow of feed reactant and coolant flow rate) of single and double FBCR. Double FBCR showed the behavior of more operating range than single FBCR. Double FBCR with nonuniform activities could assure safety operation condition for the possible variation of operating condition. Also, double FBCR had slightly higher than the single FBCR in conversion and yield.

  • The performance of homemade thermal field-flow fractionation (ThFFF) and the optimization for separation are investigated in terms of retention parameters and selectivity using polystyrene standards. The ribbonlike channel was constructed by sandwiching two Mylar spacers between two highly polished copper bars which serve as channel walls. The hot bar was heated by two electrical cartridge heaters and the cold bar had holes through the entire length, allowing tap water as coolant to enter. It has been observed that the retention of polystyrenes increases as the temperature gradient increases. And the retention decreases as the cold wall temperature increases from 20 to $45^{\circ}C$. In comparison with size exclusion chromatography, ThFFF is more selective but has relatively low efficiency. It has been found that the plate height is proportional to the flow velocity and good estimates of polydispersities can be made directly from the ThFFF data.

Analysis of a Double Pipe Heat Exchanger for Waste Solvent Recovery (폐용제 회수용 이중관형 열교환기 특성 해석)

  • This study describes to analyze the heat transfer characteristics of waste solvent recovery system using a double pipe heat exchanger heating solvent by the hot oil. The solvent recovery system consists of the feeding pump, the double pipe heat exchanger, the vacuum spray chamber, and the condenser. A double pipe heat exchanger consists of the first section to conduct the heating of solvent to the thermal saturated point and the second section to evaporate the saturated solvent. The heat transfer area for vaporization of water, benzene and alkylbenzene was predicted by the heat balance modelling and experimentally measured from the temperature distribution as a function of solvent flow rate and heating temperature. The required heat transfer area for vaporization was increased with increasing solvent flow rates and with decreasing heating temperatures due to decreased quantity of transferred heat per the unit area. Theoretical modelling of the heat transfer area for solvents vaporization in the pipe showed good agreement with experimental results. Results showed to be suitable for the waste solvent recovery using a double pipe heat exchanger.

  • The overall results of hot firing tests of fuel-rich gas generator with impinging injector at design and off-design points are described. The gas generator consists of an injector head with impinging injector, a water cooled combustor wall, a turbulence ring to enhance mixing, an instrument ring measuring temperature and pressure and a nozzle. The combustion tests were successfully performed without damage of gas generator. Test results show that the outlet temperature is not dependent on residence time of hot gas within 4~6msec but dependent on chamber pressure. The relation between outlet temperature and combustion efficiency resulting from measured pressure, mass flow rate and area of nozzle throat is shown. The overall O/F ratio is the critical parameter to determine the outlet temperature and the linear correlation between two parameters is established.

Seasonal Variations of EWT and COP of GWHP System Using the Bank Infilterated Water from Stream-Alluvial Aquifer System (하천-충적대수층계의 강변여과수를 열원으로 이용하는 지하수 열펌프 시스템의 계절별 입구온도와 효율성 평가)

  • Unconsolidated and permeable alluvial deposit composed of sand and gravel is distributed along the fluvial plain at the Iryong study area. Previous studies on the area show that a single alluvial well can produce at least 1,650m3d-1 of bank infilterated shallow groundwater(BIGW) from the deposit. This study is aimed to evaluate and simulate the influence that seasonal variation of water levels and temperatures of the river have an effect on those of BIGW under the pumping condition and also to compare seasonal variation of COPs when indirectly pumped BIGW or directly pumped surface water are used for a water to water heat pump system as an heat source and sink using 3 D flow and heat transport model of Feflow. The result shows that the magnitude influenced to water level of BIGW by fluctuation of river water level in summer and winter is about 48% and 75% of Nakdong river water level separately. Seasonal change of river water temperature is about $23.7^{\circ}C$, on other hand that of BIGW is only $3.8^{\circ}C$. The seasonal temperatures of BIGW are ranged from minimum $14.5^{\circ}C$ in cold winter(January) and maximum $18.3^{\circ}C$ in hot summer(July). It stands for that BIGW is a good source of heat energy for heating and cooling system owing to maintaining quite similar temperature($16^{\circ}C$) of background shallow groundwater. Average COPh in winter time and COPc in summer time of BIGW and surface water are estimated about 3.95, 3.5, and about 6.16 and 4.81 respectively. It clearly indicates that coefficient of performance of heat pump system using BIGW are higher than 12.9% in winter time and 28.1% in summer time in comparision with those of surface water.

A Study on the Improvement of Efficiency of Heat Transfer of Double Pipe Heat Exchanger with Helical Insert Device on Cooling of a Fuel Cell (연료전지 냉각용 헬리컬 인서트디바이스 이중관열교환기의 열전달 성능 향상에 관한 연구)

  • The present study was conducted on the improvement of the heat transfer performance of double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device. Double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device were studied for improvement of the heat transfer performance of double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device and plain double pipe heat exchangers were also studied to comparatively analyze heat transfer performance. Experimental results were derived on changes in the Reynold's numbers of the cooling water flowing in helical and plain double pipe heat exchangers and changes in the heat flux of the air. Thereafter, to verify the reliability of the experimental results, the theoretical total energy and the experimental total energy were comparatively analyzed and the following results were derived. The thermal energy of the calorie lost by the hot air and that of the calorie obtained by the cooling water were well balanced. The experiments of plain double pipe heat exchangers and double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device were conducted under normal conditions and the theoretical overall heat transfer coefficient value and the experimental overall heat transfer coefficient value coincided well with each other. In both plain double pipe heat exchangers and double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device, heat transfer rates increased as the cooling water flow velocity increased. Under the same experimental conditions, the heat transfer performance of double pipe heat exchangers with helical insert device was shown to be higher by approximately 1.5 times than that of plain double pipe heat exchangers.

COMPUTATIONAL SIMULATION OF FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM FOR CABINS OF SHIPBOARD ENCLOSURE (선박 거주구역용 소화시스템의 전산 시뮬레이션)

  • The numerical simulation has been performed to predict the performance of the fire suppression system for cabin of shipboard enclosure. The present study aims ultimately at finding the optimal parametric conditions of the mist-injecting nozzles using the CFD methods. The open numerical code was used for the present simulation named as FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator). Application has been done to predict the interaction between water mist and fire plume. In this study, the passenger cabin was chosen as simulation space. The computational domains for simulation in the passenger cabin were determined following the fire scenario of IMO rules. The full scale of the flow field is $W{\times}L{\times}H=4{\times}3{\times}2.4m^3$ with a dead zone of $W{\times}L{\times}H=1.22{\times}1.1{\times}2.4m^3$. The water mist nozzle is installed in ceiling center of 2.3 m height from the floor, and there are six mattresses and four cushions in the simulation space. The combination patterns of orifices to the main nozzle and the position to install nozzles were chosen as the simulation parameters for design applications. From the present numerical results, the centered-located nozzles having evenly combined orifices were shown as the best performance of fire suppression.
