Characteristics on Combustion Mode in Dual Mode Scramjet Engine (이중모드 스크램제트 엔진의 연소모드 특성)

  • Recently many studies have been made for the development of propulsion system with wide range flight from supersonic to hypersonic. Dual Mode scramjet engine as a hybrid cycle with advantage of ramjet and scramjet has one combustor. It works under the ramjet mode (subsonic combustion) and scramjet mode (supersonic combustion) respectively. In this study, Experimental results of hot firing tests of dual scramjet engine designed on the condition of Mach 3.5~6 as a flight Mach number are discussed. The tests were carried out on a ground test bench under free stream condition of Mach 6 at 27.6km altitude. In the tests, the adopted design and technological solutions were verified and efficient operation of the dual mode ramjet engine with Kerosene combustion during 5 seconds was demonstrated.

Experimental Investigation on Combustion Characteristics of Liquid Kerosene and Gelled Kerosene Using Shear Coaxial Injector (전단동축인젝터를 이용한 액상 케로신 및 젤 케로신의 연소특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, a hot-firing test of a lab-scale gel rocket motor using liquid kerosene and gelled kerosene as fuel was performed in order to analyze the discrepancy of the static and dynamic pressure between the two fuels. The static pressure, characteristic velocity, and characteristic velocity efficiency of the liquid kerosene and gelled kerosene did not show any significant difference. However, in the case of dynamic pressure characteristics, the pressure oscillation amplitude in a specific high frequency region of the gelled kerosene demonstrated a significantly higher amplitude than liquid kerosene case. This is considered to be the effect of an intrinsic combustion mechanism of the gel propellant, and it can be postulated that this may act as a dominant factor influencing the high frequency combustion instability of the gel rocket motor.

  • A correlation between propellant supply condition and chamber pressure in GCH4-LOx small rocket engine was explored and hot-firing tests were conducted to analyze the engine performance characteristics according to the equivalence ratio variation at a constant chamber pressure. Correlation studies have shown that chamber pressure is linearly proportional to oxidizer supply pressure. As a result of the test, the thrust, specific impulse and characteristic velocity that are the main performance parameters of a rocket engine, were found to be enhanced as the equivalence ratio starting from a fuel-lean condition approached the stoichiometric ratio, but the efficiencies of characteristic velocity and specific impulse were on the contrary, in their dependency on the equivalence ratio.

  • The pintle injector has many advantages in the key characteristics of a liquid rocket engine, such as combustion stability, combustion efficiency, and wide range of comprehensive thrust control, design and manufacture, and test fired under supercritical conditions. The pintle injector is manufactured with a rectangular, single-row orifice for thrust control and production considerations. In order to verify the combustion performance of the pintle injector and its potential as a commercial injector, the combustion characteristics were analyzed by varying the TMR (Total Momentum Ratio) and BF (Blockage Factor). The result of the hot firing test showed that the heat flux increased as TMR increased, and it confirmed that the characteristic velocity efficiency was more affected by BF than TMR. Suppose a single-row pintle injector with efficiency characteristics insensitive to changes in TMR can achieve high efficiency at low fuel differential pressure conditions. In that case, the variable pintle injector's design flexibility can be increase.
