  • The aim of this study was to find out the differences of biomechanical factors from touching down the vaulting board to landing when techniques of 1/1Turn, stretched, and Tucked were performed on the old vaulting horse and on the new vaulting table. Three national representative men gymnasts were sampled for this study. Three dimension motion analyses by means of six Sony PD-150 video cameras with the velocity of 60 fps were used. As a result of analyzing the kinetic data from two kind of vaulting table, the following conclusions were made. 1. There was not significant differences of angular momentum between the old and the new vaulting table in all three techniques except the phase of stepping on the vaulting board and contacting the vaulting horse in the Tucked technique. IN the two phases above, the angular momentum in the new vaulting table was greater than that of the old vaulting horse. 2. There were few significant differences between the old and the new vaulting horses in the horizontal and vertical reaction force according to techniques when stepping was performed. However, it appeared tendency that the horizontal and vertical reaction force in the new vaulting table was a little greater than that of the old vaulting horse when the 1/1Turn, the Stretched and the Tucked were performed.

  • It is well-known that onion and garlic of Allium family have been cultivated for major food since ancient times. Especially garlic is known for containing protective materials against cardiovascular disease, neoplasm and cancer, and decreasing cholesterol value. Hemolytic anemia was first reported by Goldsmith in onion-fed cattle in 1909. Subsequently, similar effects have been reported in cattle, horses, sheep, dogs and cats. This toxic effect has been attributed to npropyl disulfide which causes oxidant damage to erythrocyte cell membrane. There are few reports on overconsumption of garlic. Kim et al. reported in 1999 that 45% of Jindo dogs in korea have erythrocytes characterized by high Na-K-ATPase activity with high K and low Na concentrations (HK) which easily results in hemolytic anemia. The purpose of present report is to determine whether garlic-induced hemolytic anemia occurs in normal erythrocytes characterized by complete lack of Na-K-ATPase activity with low K and high Na concentrations (LK) when LK dogs are fed large amounts of garlics. We found in this experiment that Erythrocyte count, PCV and Hemoglobin concentration decreased significantly, and GSH and Met-hemoglobin concentrations increased. Consequently, we determined that overconsumption of garlic induces hemolytic anemia in LK dogs.

  • It was carried out to investigate the antibiotic residues detected by the residue tests for edible tissues of slaughtered livestock in Korea from January to November in 2019. Positive cases of qualitative test and analytical test for 11 months were 689 and 341, respectively. Positive cases of analytical test for cattle, pigs, horses and poultry were 164, 168, 2 and 7, respectively. Antibiotics were detected from 472 materials from 341 cases and classified as β-lactams 162 (37.9%), aminoglycosides 141 (33%), quinolones 69 (16.2%), sulfonamides 23 (5.4%), amphenicols 10 (2.3%), tetracyclines 9 (2.1%), macrolides 6 (1.4%) and the rest 7 (1.4%). Other materials were benzyl penicillin 119 (27.9%), (dihydro)streptomycin 105 (24.6%) and enrofloxacin (including ciprofloxacin) 39 (9.1%). In conclusion, strict management of benzyl penicillin and streptomycin in cattle and pigs should be implemented to reduce the positive cases of slaughtered livestock in Korea.

  • Eosinophilic granuloma is a common hypersensitive inflammatory skin disease in cats, and rare in dogs and horses. The skin biopsies of 5 years old female Cocker spaniel and 2 years old female mixed dog had the clinical signs of skin nodules with alopecia were submitted for diagnosis. Solitary skin nodules and papillary nodules were presented on the left external ear and back of Cocker spaniel and on the external ear of mixed dog, respectively. Histopathologically, epidermis of skin showed mild to severe hyperplasia with multifocal ulceration. Small to large irregular, brightly eosinophilic foci with degenerating eosinophils and homogeneous degenerated collagens were existed in the dermis of both ear and back skin. Typical 'flame figures', a mixture of degenerated collagen and degranulated eosinophils, were observed in both cases. Based on the histopathologic findings and special staining characters, 2 cases were diagnosed as canine eosinophilic granuloma. This is the first report for the eosinophilic granuloma of dogs in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is reviewing and researching the symbolic meaning and classifying the types of the style of the Costume in classical novel 'Shimchungjun' focusing on the woman's costume through the antique records and tombs bequests. Titled ladies for royal family put on 'Wooimkyoryong' and 'Sungun' as a petticoat when the ladies of Song period rode on horses. The underskirt played a part to swell a skirt for ladies. 'Bakjueui' and 'Hwangsangi' were ordinary clothes ranging from ladies of loyal family to women. The red color was limited to royal family. The ordinary clothes of women were white ramie clothes commonly and floral patterned clothes were prohibited to the ordinary clothes for women. 'Ko', a breast-tie (breast ribbon) of a Korean coat, was made of silk and women wear as an outer garment. The common people will wear 'Ko' of white ramie clothes which was very active items. The ladies of royal family and women put on shoes made of white ramie clothes, but the full dress of queen wore blue boots made of leather. The noble women wore 'Suk'(boots) made of deer skin and common people wore straw shoes regardless of gender and age. Sometimes they wore 'Woopihye' made of cowhide. In the first of Koryo era, the styles of dress were consisted of 'Monso', 'Eui', 'Po', 'Dae', 'Koh', 'Sang', 'Sungkun' and 'Kangnang'. The structure of costume for women made little difference and there was a great difference with decoration.

  • This paper aims to describe port competition in East Asia and the Korean government's port strategy. In doing so, the paper provides an overview of global changes in international trade, the shipping industry and the port business. It also delineates the status of port competition in the region. Particular examples are taken from the competition among the ports of Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia, as well as those of Pusan and Kwangyang, Kaohsiung, Kobe, and Shanghai and Yantian. The port competition in East Asia is reviewed and classified in two groups: north-tier competition among traditional major players, such as Kobe and Pusan, and dark horses such as Shanghai, Kwangyang and perhaps Yokohama; and south-tier competition among the three traditionally big players Kaohsiung, Hong Kong and Singapore, and the relative newcomers of Yantian in China, and Tanjung Pelepas In Malaysia. Due to the enlarging of ships and expansion of port activities, the boundary between the two tier frontiers breakdown, or they may even merge, into one grand frontier, in the foreseeable future. Although it appears that Asian ports are not being very aggressive in preparing for the future of mega-carrier in their plans, it is true that China, Korea and Taiwan are moving full steam ahead in comprehensively developing their container ports on a large scale. It therefore seems to be the perfect time for rival ports to explore a port alliance strategy to fight against the trend toward alliances between of many shipping lines.

  • Microsporum gypseum was identified as the prime cause of dermatitis in two young horses who were housed in unhygienic stables. The lesions were mainly distributed on the thorax, abdomen and rump. The diagnosis was established on the direct demonstration of dermatophyte in the cutaneous lesions and isolation of the fungus in pure and heavy growth from the infected hairs and skin scales on mycological medium at 3$0^{\circ}C$. Microscopoc morphology of the isolate in 'PHOL' stain many macroconidia and few microconidia. Epidemoilogical investigation revealed the prevalence of M. gypseum in the soil of stables. Mycological examination is highly imperative to distinguish the disease from other dermatological disorders. This apperas to be the first report of equine dermatitis due to M. gypseum in Westenn India.

  • The fused and deformed lumbar vertebrae (L) of Thoroughbred horses were observed macroscopically. Results revealed five L in two cases, and six L in three cases. In two cases, the last two lumbar vertebrae were fused with each other. One case of the fused lumbar vertebra was observed in a horse with five L and the other in that with six L. In one case, the facet of second last lumbar vertebra was articulated with its anterior lumbar vertebra. On the other hand, four cases had the caudal border on the lateral tip of the lumbar transverse process partially overlapped with the cranial border of the following lumbar transverse process. In these cases, cranial and caudal tubers were formed on the overlapped part of the lumbar transverse process.

  • Seventy-six animals including cattle, sheep, horses, 6 species of zoo animals were employed for collection of fresh feces in order to detect verotoxigenic Esherichia coli (VTEC) by safe, quick and sensitive PCR-based molecular methods. Bacterial cell disruption with bead-beating followed by bacterial DNA purification with hydroxyapatide chromatography and gel filtration allowed DNA preparation from animal feces with high recovery and purity. A mountain goat was firstly shown by PCR and sequencing to shed verotoxin 2 gene (vt2) that was used to generate vt2 probe and second primer set for nested PCR to attempt more sensitive detection. Most sensitive nested PCR revealed that 45% of tested cattle and 47% of tested zoo animals were VTEC-positive, while least sensitive normal PCR detected VTEC from none of these animals except a mountain goat. Moderately sensitive detection by PCR in combination with hybridization suggested that the VTEC density varied between the VTEC-positive cattle.
