  • Scheelite deposits in Sangdong mine are divided into three parallel vein groups, namely "Hanging-wall vein" which is located in the lowest parts of Pungchon Limestone, "Main vein" the most productive vein replaced a intercalated limestone bed in Myobong slate, "Foot-wall veins" a group of several thin veins parallel to main vein in Myobong slate. Besides the above, there are many productive quartz veins imbedded in the above veins and Myobong slate. Molybdenite and wolframite are barren in the former three veins group but associates only in quartz veins. Both main vein and foot-wall veins show regular zonal distribution, quartz rich zone in the center, hornblende rich zone surrounding the quartz rich zone and diopside rich zone in the further outside to the marginal parts of the vein. According to the distribution of three main minerals, quartz, hornblende and diopside the main vein can be divided into three zones which are in turn grouped into 7 subzones by distinct mineral paragenesis. They are summerized as follows: A. Diopside rich zone: 1. garnet-diopside.fl.uorite subzone 2. diopside-zoisite-quartz subzone 3. diopside-plagioclase subzone B. Hornblende rich zone: 4. hornblende-diopside-quartz subzone 5. hornblende-quartz-chlorite subzone 6. hornblende-plagioclase-quartz.sphene subzone C. Quartz rich zone: 7. quartz-mica-chlorite subzone The foot-wall veins can similarly be divided by mineral paragenesis into 3 zones, 6 subzones as follows: A. diopside rich zone: 1. garnet-diopside-quartz.fl.uorite subzone 2. garnet-diopside-wollastonite subzone B. Hornblende rich zone: 3. quartz-hornblende-chlorite subzone 4. hornblende-plagioclase-quartz subzone 5. hornblende-diopside-quartz subzone C. Quartz rich zone: 6. quartz-mica subzone The hanging-wall vein is generally grouped into 9 subzones by the mineral paragenesis which show random distribution. They are as follows: 1. diopside-garnet-fluorite subzone 2. diopside-zoisite-quartz subzone 3. diopside-hornblende-quartz-fluorite subzone 4. wollastonite-garnet-diopside subzone 5. hornblende-chlorite-quartz subzone 6. quartz-plagioclase-hornblende-sphene subzone 7. quartz-biotite subzone 8. quartz-calcite subzone 9. calcite-altered minerals subzone Among many composing minerals, garnet specially shows characteristic distribution and optical properties. Anisotropic and euhedral grossularite is generally distributed in the hanging wall vein and lower parts of the main vein, whereas isotropic and anhedral andradite in the upper parts of the main vein. Plagioclase (anorthite) and sphene are distributed ony near the foot-wall side of the aboveveins. wollastonite is a characteristic mineral in upper parts of the hang-wall vein. Molybdenite is distributed in the upper parts of quartz veins and wolframite in lower parts of quartz veins.

  • Hornblende gabbro-lamprophyre-diorite Complex in Guwoonri, Hwacheon distributes in a zonal pattern, where the diorite distributed along the margin of the Complex encompasses the hornblende gabbro body in the central part of the Complex, and lamprophyre intruded in vein along the boundary between diorite and hornblende gabbro. The hornblende gabbro in the central part of the Complex also shows a zonal distribution pattern, where hornblende gabbro containing subspherical amphibole phenocrysts as a major mafic mineral(Sag) surrounds hornblende gabbro with prismatic amphiboles as a principal mafic mineral(Pag). The zonal distributions observed in hornblende gabbro-lamprophyre-diorite Complex in Guwoonri resulted from two different geological processes. The zonal distribution among diorite, lamprophyre, and hornblende gabbro was due to intrusions of three distinct magmas derived from different degree of partial melting of a common source rock, whereas the zonal distribution shown within the hornblende gabbro body occupying the central part of the Complex resulted from an inward fractional crystallization of a single magma. Geochemical characteristics and mineral mode of hornblende gabbro, lamprophyre, and diorite indicate that these rocks formed from hydrous mafic to intermediate magma derived from partial melting of enriched mantle, which has been caused by infiltration of volatiles including water into mantle in plate margin.

  • Plutons of Damyang-Jinan area consist of gray feldspar granite gneiss, biotite granite gneiss, foliated granites, Namweon granites, gabbro, biotite granite and Ogangri granite in term of mineralogical, texture and field evidence. From Isotope data of study area, chronological order of the Plutons are the Pre-cambrian gray feldspar granite gneiss(Ar39-Ar40, hornblende, $1998.4{\pm}8.3Ma$), middle to late Triassic Daegang foliated granite(Rb/Sr, whole rock, $288{\pm}4Ma$), foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite(K/Ar, hornblende, $198.7{\pm}9.9Ma$), Sunchang foliated granodiorite(Rb/Sr, whole rock, $222{\pm}4Ma$), foliated two mica granite, Samori foliated granite and Namweon granite(Rb/Sr, whole rock, $211{\pm}3Ma$: K/Ar, hornblende, $203{\pm}10.2Ma$), middle Jurassic Gabbro(K/Ar, hornblende, $180.7{\pm}9MA$) and biotite granite, and Cretaceous Ogangri granite. According to variations diagrams of $Al_2O_3$ versus normative PI(100 An)/(Ab+An), Daegang foliated granite is plotted on tholeiitic series, and other foliated granites on calc alkaline rock series which are consider to be formed by magmatism at continental margin and island arc region. And alkalinity versus $SiO_2$ shows that Daegang folited granite and Samori foliated granite are correspond to alkaline region, foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite and Sunchang foliated granodiorite to calc alkaline region, and foliated two mica granite to both regions. According to ACF diagrams, Daegang and Samori foliated granites are plotted on S-type. Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite and Sunchang foliated granodiorite on I-type, and foliated two mica granite on both type. Foliated granites are a series of differentiated products from cogenetic magma, and effected under ductile sheared zone. Characteristic foliation of foliated granites are considered to be generated by dextral strike slip faulting and ductile shearing.

  • The pluton rocks in Kwangyang-Seungju area consist of two mica granite, hornblende diorite, Rimunri quartz diorite, grnodiorite porphyry and granophyre. The analysis of the geochronological data by the methods of K-Ar for the hornblende from Rimunri quartz diorite and hornblende diorite show that the ages are found to be $86{\pm}3.3$ Ma and $108{\pm}4$ Ma, respectively, and K-Ar age for chlorite from the altered two mica granite which intruded by the hornblende diorite of the Bonjeong mine shows $108{\pm}4$ Ma; K-Ar age for sericite from the greisenized hornblende diorite, which is closely associated with the Bonjeong ore deposits, is dated as $94.2{\pm}2.4$ Ma. They correspond to the igneous activity of the Bulgugsa Disturbance periods in the area. In chemical feature for oxides versus silica and AFM triagular diagrams of the pluton rocks in the study area, there is a suggestion of the possibility that these rock facies area a Calc-alkali series of differentiated products by low-pressure crystal fractionation processes in $SiO_2$-undersaturated suites. Compared with hornblende diorite, andesite and granodiorite porphyry, two mica granite, Rimunri quartz diorite and granophyre exhibit a wider range of normalized REE abundance and negative Eu anomalies. Such anomalies imply more extensive feldspar fractionation during crystallization. The Rimunri quartz diorite and hornblende diorite occurring in the margin of four mines(Bonjeong, Okdong, Soungchei and Saungyeul) of this area have high contents of As, Sb, Cu and Zn which have been shown as the best indicators in hypogene gold deposits and low contents of Ba, Cr served as more sensitive indicators. And the granitoids are regarded as the rocks associated with gold and sulfide mineralization of the area.

  • Igneolls rocks of the Hamyang area consist of Hamyang foliated granites and hornblende diorite. Hamyang foliated granites are classified into four rock types in terms of mineral composition and texture. The four rock types are foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite, foliated porphrytic granodiorite, foliated fine biotite granodiorite and foliated leuco granite. Petrochemical data of these rocks suggest that Hamyang foliated granites is calc-alkali rock series of differentiated products of cogenetic magma by fractional crystallization. Igneous rocks of studied area correspond to I-type, peraluminous and calc alkali rock series. Rb-Sr age and $Sr^{87}/Sr^{86}$ initial ratio for foliated prophrytic granodiorite is $200{\pm}Ma$and $0.711{\pm}0.0037$, respectively. K-Ar(hornblende) age of hornblende diorite is $179{\pm}9Ma$. These data come to an coincidence with Igneous activity of South Korea which were proposed by O.J. Kim(1975), that is, they correspond to Hamyang foliated granites of products of Songrim Disturbance, and to hornblende diorite of Daebo Orogeny.

  • Foliated granites between Damyang and Jinan are subdivided into Daegang foliated granite, Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite, Sunchang foliated granodiorite, Foliated two mica granite and Samori foliated granite by mineral and texture. From EPMA data of the foliated granites following results are achieved. Composition of plagioclase are correspond to andesine, oligoclase and albite in Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite, Sunchang foliated granodiorite and other foliated granites, respectively. And amphiboles are calcic hornblende in Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite, and riebeckite in Daegang foliated granite. In differentiation index(D. I.) and Larsen index(L. I.), Daegang foliated granite, Foliated two mica granite and Samori foliated granite which belong to granite are 83.12-95.54 and 25.86-29.05 and Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite and Sunchang foliated granodiorite of diorite to granodiorite are 54.99-78.54(D. I.) and 6.48-21.01(L. I.). Harker and AMF diagrams plotted from foliated granites show that the granites are product of calc alkali rock series orignated from co-magma. Characteristic foliation of foliated granites fromed by ductile deformation at deep zone of dextral strike slip fault. Foliated granites are considered as a series of differentiated product of Triassic Igneous activity of Songrim disturbance. According to REE, (La/Lu) and Eu/Sm, Foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite and Sunchang foliated granodiorite are correspond to granodiorite, and other foliated granites are monzo-and syeno-granite. Foliated granites having 0.20-0.01 of Em/Sm ratio are plutons emplaced by the tectonic setting in continents and continental margin.

  • The study focused to the so called "Yangpyeong Igneous Complex" which intruded into the Gyeong Gi gneiss complex of Pre-cambrian basement of Yangpyeong area. The geologic sequence of the mapped area was shown in table 1. In laboratory work, 31 modal analyses and 7 chemical analyses on the rock samples taken from the igneous complex have been made to discuss the nomenclature of the rocks and the petrological relationship between rock types. The petrographical and petrochemical features based on the analyses are as follow; 1) The classification of this rocks based on the systematics of igneous rocks of IUGS showed that Yangpyeong Igneous complex consist of hornblende gabbro, diorite and porphyritic monzonite. The major rock forming minerals in hornblende gabbro are hornblende and plagiodase ($An_{46{\sim}55}$), in diorite, hornblende, biotite and plagioclase ($An_{23{\sim}33}$) and in porphyritic monzonite, K-feldspar, plagioclase ($An_{21{\sim}35}$), hornblende and biotite. Hornblende gabbro and diorite show coarse to medium grained hypidiomorphic granular texture and porphyritic monzonite was named by the characteristically porphyritic texture of K-feldspar phenocrysts. 2) Silica-oxides variation diagram (Fig.4) illustrate that the igneous complex is similar ttl that of Daly's average basalt-andesite-dacite-rhyolite and equivalent to the calc-alkalic rock series of Peacock's rock series. In AMF diagram (Fig. 5), the trend of the igneous complex is nearly pararell to that of the Skaergaard intrusion which shows the trend of the fractional crystalization of magma. 3) In normative Or-Ab-An diagram (Fig. 6) the general trend of the data points from gabbro to porphyritic monzonite of the igneous complex directs to a point of Or/Ab=1:1 on the side of Or-Ab. The field and laboratory evidences suggested that the Yangpyeong igneous complex was thought to be a series of comagmatic differential products.

  • We have dated the K-Ar, Ar-Ar and U-Pb ages of the Masan hornblende-biotite granite in the southern Cretaceous Gyeongsang basin to constrain its emplacement age. The ~108 Ma hornblende K-Ar age obtained in the study is similar to the previously reported Rb-Sr age. However, the single grain total fusion $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ dating on hornblende failed to yield statistically meaningful ages because the isotopic system was open during its alteration. Thus the hornblende K-Ar age in the study is also unlikely to be reliable. The single grain total fusion $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ dating on biotite yielded an average age of $75.8{\pm}3.0Ma$. Apart from scattered data in the range of ~45-75 Ma, the average age increased to ~80 Ma. The SHRIMP and LA-MC-ICPMS U-Pb isotopic compositions of zircon from the Masan hornblende-biotite granite yielded its emplacement age as $87.6{\pm}2.7Ma$ and $86.8{\pm}0.4Ma$, respectively. It is thus likely that the ~80 Ma $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ age of biotite might reflect the cooling age of Masan hornblende-biotite granite or the thermal influences from later intense igneous activities in the Gyeongsang basin.

  • The Cretaceous Chaeyaksan basaltic rocks consist mainly of basaltic tuffs intercalating three layers of basalt. Stratigraphically, the rocks are located between the upper Songnaedong Formation and the lower Geoncheonri Formation and contain plagioclase, augite, hornblende, and a few olivine phenocrysts. Geochemically, they show calc-alkaline characteristics in some immobile element content, but show the alkaline suite feature in the mobile major element composition. The basalts are widely spilitized but some of them is altered to shoshonitic rocks with more calcic plagioclase, calcite, and chlorite, and adularia veinlets are common in the rocks. It is supposed that the post-eruption alteration of the rocks is done through alkali-replacement by hydrothermal solution or vapor rather than by low grade regional metamorphism. It is considered that A1 in hornblende will be available for estimating the pressure of the pre-eruption magma in the reservoir although the plagioclase of the rocks are highly albitized. The crystallization pressure was calculated as 5.7Kb by the equation of Johnson and Rutherford(l989) incorporating of the effect of overestimate of .41T in hornblende in the case of quartz-free rocks. Application of the estimated temperature, pressure and the constituent of phenocrysts of the rocks to the experimental P-T phase diagram for basalts established by Green(1982) indicates the crystallization course and succession of growth of the phenocrysts during of rising and cooling of the magma reservoir; augite + augite and olivine + augite, olivine, and hornblende -+ augite and hornblende+ augite, hornblende, and plagioclase. Such evolution course of the magma may include crystal fractionation by the phenocrysts crystallization and contamination by country rock in lower crust.

  • Mupung granite, which is located adjacent to Gimcheon granites to the north and Geochang granites to the south, has been known to consist of biotite-hornblende granite (Gbh), porphyritic granite (Gp), and hornblende-biotite granite (Ghb). In this study, we subdivided the Gbh of Mupung granite into biotite granite (Gb) and biotite hornblende granite (Gbh), based on petrological observations. The grayish Gb with medium to coarse grain and porphyritic texture contains a small amount of muscovite, but the hornblende and mafic microgranular enclave (MME) is not observed in Gb. On the other hand, MME can be commonly found in pinkish Gbh. The mafic minerals in Gbh are mostly hornblende and biotite. In the Gb in Mupung granites, the hornblende and sphene (which is the characteristic minerals in Gimcheon granite) are not observed. In addition, the trend of the changes in major elements of Gb in Mupung granites is similar to that of Geochang granites. These petrological characteristics suggest that the Gb in Mupung granite has a similarity with Geochang granite (than Gimchen granite). We also observed that the texture and composition of minerals of Gbh, as well as those of surrounding Gp and Ghb, are consistent with the characteristics of Cretaceous granites in Gyeongsang basin, rather than those of Jurassic granites in Yeongnam massif.
