Pillar stability in very near-twin tunnels (초근접 병설터널의 필라 안정성 확보)

  • The objective of this study is to suggest a safe and economical pillar reinforcement method when very near-twin tunnels with a minimum interval of 1 m passes through a soft zone such as weathered soil or weathered rock. A standard cross-sectional view of a two-lane road tunnel was applied to suggest a pillar reinforcement method for the very near-twin tunnels. The thickness of the pillar was 1 m. The ground condition around the tunnel was weathered soil or weathered rock. There were four reinforcement methods for pillar stability evaluation. These were rock bolt reinforcement, pre-stressed steel strand reinforcement, horizontal steel pipe grouting reinforcement, horizontal steel pipe grouting + prestressed steel strand reinforcement. When the ground condition was weathered soil, only the pillar reinforced the horizontal steel pipe grouting + prestressed steel strand did not failed. When the ground condition was weathered rock, there were no failure of the pillar reinforced the horizontal steel pipe grouting or the horizontal steel pipe grouting + prestressed steel strand. It is considered that the horizontal steel pipe grouting reinforcement played a role in increasing the stability of the upper part of the pillar by supporting the upper load applied to the upper part of the pillar.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. The parameters analyzed in the study include three pile materials of steel, concrete and composite, pile diameter, pile distance and loading direction. As the results, the axial capacity of the composite pile was about 73% larger than that of the steel pipe pile and about 14% larger than that of the concrete pile. In addition, the horizontal movement at the pile head of the composite pile was about 51% of that of the steel pile and about 19% of that of the concrete pile.

In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of the pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. At the allowable movement criteria, the horizontal capacity of the composite pile was 1.46 times larger than that of the steel pile and 1.25 times larger than that of the concrete pile. In addition, the horizontal movement at the pile head of the composite pile was about 78% of that of the steel pile and about 53% of that of the concrete pile, which showed that the movement reduction effect of the composite pile was significant and enables the economical design of drilled shafts.

  • Tunneling in difficult geological conditions is often inevitable especially in urban areas. Ground improvement and reinforcement techniques are often required to guarantee safe tunnel excavations and/or to prevent damage to adjacent structures. The steel pipe-reinforced multi-step grouting method has been recently applied to tunnel sites in Korea as an auxiliary technique. In this study, the face stability with steel pipe-reinforced multi-step grouting was evaluated by simultaneously considering two factors: one is the effective stress acting on the tunnel face calculated by limit theorem and limit equilibrium method; the other is the seepage force obtained by means of numerical analysis. The study revealed that the influence of the steel pipe-reinforced multi-step grouting on the support pressure in dry condition is not significant while there is relatively a large amount of reduction in seepage forces by adopting the technique in saturated condition. The effect of the anisotropy of permeability on the seepage force acting on the tunnel face was also estimated by conducting the coupled analysis. It was found that a higher horizontal permeability compared with the vertical one causes reduction in the seepage force acting on the tunnel face.

In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. The parameters analyzed in the study include three pile materials of steel, concrete and composite, pile diameter, pile distance and loading direction. The results showed that the axial capacity of the composite pile was about 90% larger than that of the steel pipe pile while similar to that of the concrete pile. At the allowable movement criteria, the horizontal capacity of the composite pile was about 50% lager than that of the steel pile and about 22% larger than that of the concrete pile.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the numerical models and the related input parameters were analyzed to simulate the axial load-movement relations, which were obtained from the compression loading tests for the cylindrical specimens of the steel pipe, the concrete, and the steel-concrete composite. As the results, the behavior of the steel pipe was simulated by the von-Mises model and that of the concrete by the strain-softening model, which decreases cohesion and dilation angles as the function of plastic strains. In addition, the reinforcing bars in the concrete were simulated by applying the yielding moment and decreasing the sectional area of the bars. The applied numerical models properly simulated the yielding behavior and the reinforcement effect of the steel-concrete composite piles. The parametric study for the real-size piles showed that the material strength of the steel-concrete composite pile increased about 10% for the axial loading and about 20~45% for the horizontal loading due to the reinforcement effect by the surrounding steel pipe pile.

  • When building tunnels beneath riverbeds where very large quantities of groundwater inflow exist, added to high water head the soil supporting conditions are very poor because the soil consists of sand and silt, etc. It is necessary to have grouting and mini pipe roof installed in the region for ground reinforcement to decrease permeability. According to this result of horizontal boring and laboratory soil testing, ground reinforcement was achieved by L.W grouting for range of 3.0 times the tunnel radius, to increase stability of the tunnel we used the ling-cut method, 0.8m for one step excavation, shotcrete with 25cm thick, steel lib with H-$125{\times}125$. and a temporary shotcrete invert 20cm thick was installed to prevent deformation of the tunnel.

  • This study is about the reinforcing type of reinforcement method which is reinforced in tunnel portal of tunnel with bad ground condition. Generally, it is known that the horizontal reinforcement method is more effective than the conventional reinforcement method. However, as a limitation of the tunnel construction technology, it is being constructed by the superposition reinforcement method. In recent years, high-strength large-diameter steel pipes and horizontally oriented longitudes (L = 30.0~50.0 m) construction technology have been developed. Therefore, it is required to study reinforcement method of tunnel portal reinforcement method. Therefore, 3-D numerical analysis (Midas GTS NX 3D) was performed by setting the reinforcement method (No reinforcement type, overlap reinforcement type and horizontal reinforcement type) and ground condition as parameters. As a result, it was considered that the reinforcement effect was the largest as the horizontal reinforcement type of the reinforcement method was the smallest in the displacement and the support material stress. Based on the results of the numerical analysis, horizontal steel pipe grouting was applied to the actual tunnel site. The displacement of the tunnel portal and the stress of the support material occurred within the allowable values and were considered to ensure sufficient stability.
