Turbulent natural convective flow and heat transfer in a square enclosure with horizontal partition are investigated numerically. The enclosure is composed of a lower hot and a upper cold horizontal walls and adiabatic vertical walls. Partitions carried with the upward, downward, and both control plates are attached perpendicularly to the one of the vertical insulated walls, respectively. The low Reynolds number $k-\varepsilon$ model is adopted to calculate the turbulent thermal convection. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations have been carried out by varying the length of partition, the position of control plates, and the Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between two horizontal walls and the enclosure height for water(Pr=4.95). When the control plates are attached at the edge of partition, the stability of oscillating flow grows wrose with the increase of Rayleigh number and the partition length. The heat transfer rate has been reducer than that of no control plate due to the restraint of control plates with the increase of Rayleigh number.
In the present paper, the wave absorbing performance of the fully submerged horizontal porous plates has been investigated, numerically and experimentally. The submerged porous system is composed of multi-layered horizontal porous plates that are clamped at the vertical setwall, which are slightly inclined and placed vertically, in parallel, with spacing. The hydrodynamic interaction of incident waves with the rigid porous multi-layered plates was formulated within the context of linear wave-body interaction theory and Darcy's law. In order to validate the effectiveness of the present computing code, the numerical results were compared with the analytical and experimental results. It is found that triple horizontal porous plates with slight inclination, if properly tuned for wave energy dissipation against the standing waves in front of the vertical wall, can have high performances in reducing the reflected wave amplitudes against the incident waves over a wide range of wave frequency.
A theoretical study by numerical method has been performed on the natural convection of an air contained in enclosures. The enclosures have rectangular cross section with one vertical wall heated and the other cooled, and with two horizontal partition plates of finite thermal conductivity. Steady two-dimensional flow was assumed. The computation was executed by means of the Implicit Alternating Direction (I.A.D) finite-difference method. Two partition plates of Aluminium whose thickness were 0.05mm was employed in computation. Isothemals, streamlines, local Nusselt numbers and mean Nusselt numbers were obtained for various Grashof numbers and aspect ratio and these results were compared with those in the case of the enclosure with two horizontal insulated plates. From the present results, the heat transfer in the case of partition plates was greater than that in the case of insulation. This study suggests a method to measure the overall heat-transfer of coefficient in double walls which supported by partition plates for insulative construction.
The use of box columns has been increased due to the rigidity in rigid orthogonal moment resisting frames. On the other hand, the installation and welding of necessary horizontal continuity plates inside the columns are both labor-consuming and costly tasks. Accordingly, in this paper, a new beam-to-box column connection by trapezoidal external stiffeners and horizontal bar mats is presented to provide seismic parameters. The proposed connection consists of eight external stiffeners in the level of beam flanges and five horizontal bar mats in Concrete Filled Tube (CFT) columns. The new connection effectively alleviates the stress concentration and moves the plastic hinge away from the column face by horizontal external stiffeners. In addition, the result shows that proposed connection has provided the required strength and rigidity of connection, so that the increased strength, 8.08% and rigidity, 3.01% are compared to connection with internal continuity plates, also the results indicate that this connection can offer appropriate ductility and energy dissipation capacity for its potential application in moment resisting frames in seismic region. As a result, the proposed connection can be a good alternative for connection with continuity plates.

Freezing of turbulent water flow between two horizontal cooled parallel plates with the separated region has been investigated experimentally. The flow separation was induced by vertical plates (two-dimensional plates) situated at the inlet of the rectangular channel. The degree of flow separation was varied by employing vertical thin plates with various heights. Three kinds of the vertical plates with 8.0, 9.8 and 12.5 mm in height were utilized. The Reynolds number and cooling temperature ratio were ranged from $3.45\times10^3 to 1.73\times10^4$ and 7.0 to 20.0 respectively, The measurements show that the flow separation influenced remarkably on the local ice formation characteristics. The location of the first ice layer and the average heat transfer at the ice surface were found be correlated as a function of the Reynolds number, the cooling temperature ratio, and the orifice height ratio.
Flow and heat transfer characteristics in a horizontal electronic circuit board are studied numerically. The board has the arrays of heated blocks and the spaces between the plates and blocks are changed. Air in used as cooling fluid, of which prandt1 number is 0.7. The velocity distributions, temperature distributions, Nusselt numbers and dimensionless friction factors are obtained on the spaces between the plates and the blocks, for the cases of Rayleigh number, 0 and 10$^{5}$ . When Rayleigh number is so large, such as 10$^{5}$ , that the effect of bouyancy is not negligible, fluid friction and heat transfer is increased more than those of forced convection. This may be caused by the generation of secondary flow on the cross section of primary flow. The effect of bouyancy is of the most efficient, when the space of blocks is about block-width and the space of plates is about 1.7 times of block-height.
The truss based steel bridge structures usually consists of gusset plates which lose their load carrying capacity and rigidity under the effect of repeated and dynamics loads. This paper is focused on modeling the nonlinear material behavior of the gusset plates of the Truss Based Bridges subjected to dynamics loads. The nonlinear behavior of material is characterized by a damage coupled elsto-plastic material models. A truss bridge finite element model is established in Abaqus with the details of the gusset plates and their connections. The nonlinear finite element analyses are performed to calculate stress and strain states in the gusset plates under different loading conditions. The study indicates that damage initiation occurred in the plastic deformation localized region of the gusset plates where all, diagonal, horizontal and vertical, truss member met and are critical for shear type of failure due tension and compression interaction. These findings are agreed with the analytical and experimental results obtained for the stress distribution of this kind gusset plate.
For application in nuclear decommissioning, underwater laser cutting studies were conducted on thick stainless-steel plates for various cutting directions using a 6 kW fiber laser. For cutting along the horizontal direction with horizontal laser irradiation, the maximum cutting speed was 110 mm·min-1 for a 48 mm thick stainless-steel plate. For cutting along the vertical direction with horizontal laser irradiation, a maximum speed of 120 mm·min-1 was obtained for the same thickness, which confirmed that the cutting performance was similar but slightly better. Moreover, when cutting with vertically downward laser irradiation, the maximum cutting speed was 120 mm·min-1 for a plate of the same thickness. Thus, the cutting performance for vertical irradiation was nearly identical to that for horizontal irradiation. In conclusion, it was possible to cut thick stainless-steel plates regardless of the laser irradiation and cutting directions, although the assist gas rose up due to buoyancy. These observations are expected to benefit laser cutting procedures during the actual dismantling of nuclear facilities.
