  • Experimental data on the heat transfer characteristics of HCFC-123 and CFC-11 during condensation in horizontal smooth tube are presented. The experimental apparatus consisted of a closed working fluid loop, coolant loop, and measuring system. The major components of the working fluid loop made of a refrigerant pump, boiler, superheater, refrigerant flow meter, receiver and test section. The tube-in-tube type test section was made of smooth tube which were constructed form 9.52 mm outer diameter of smooth copper tube with 50 mm outside diameter of PVC tube duct. The ranges of parameter, such as refrigerant mass velocity, coolant flow rate, and quality were 90-325kg/($m^2$.s), 60-360kg/h, 5-95% respectively. Data were obtained under steady state condition for annular flow. As a result of these, the condensation heat transfer coefficients for HCFC-123 were slightly lower than those of CFC-11 from 8% to 15% inside horizontal smooth tube. Furthermore, a new generalized correlation for the heat transfer coefficients of HCFC-123 and CFC-11 during condensation inside horizontal smooth tube is proposed.

  • The natural convective flow in a two-dimensional square enclosure with horizontal partitions is investigated numerically. The enclosure was composed of the lower hot and the upper cold horizontal walls and the adiabatic vertical walls, and two identical partitions were positioned perpendicularly at the mid-height of the right and left walls, respectively. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. Calculations are made for different partition lengths, partition conductivites, and Rayleigh numbers based on the temperature difference between two horizontal walls and the enclosure height with water(Pr=4.95). An oscillatory motion of the natural convective flow is affected significantly by the variation of the gap width and Rayleigh number. When the gap width is comparatively short, the heat transfer rate is raised with the increase of the thermal conductivity of partitions. However, for sufficiently large gap widths at higher Rayleigh numbers, the average Nusselt numbers of the conductive partitions are smaller than those of the adiabatic partitions.

  • This paper presents a numerical simulation of the behavior of the LiBr solution droplets and falling films in horizontal tube banks of absorber. The model developed here accounts for the details of the droplets formation and impact process for absorption on horizontal tubes including the heat transfer from solution film to the tube wall. Especially. the characteristic of unsteady behavior of solution flow has been investigated. Flow visualization studies shown that the solution droplets and falling films have some of the complex characteristics. It is found that. with the numerical conditions similar to the operating condition of an actual absorption chiller/heater, the outlet solution temperature and heat flux from solution film to the tube wall have a stable periodic behavior with time. The solution droplets and falling films in horizontal tube banks of absorber is a periodic unsteady flow. The results from this model are compared with previous experimental observation taken with a high-speed digital video camera and shown good agreement.

  • Horizontal air-jet effect has been utilized in some air conditioning systems in order to control the contaminated air indoor. In the present study, the flow and heat transfer of the contaminated air from a range hood system has been investigated with or without horizontal air-jet effect when the hood fan is on or off. For the present numerical experiment, PAT Flow code has been used. From the present numerical simulations, it has been shown that the air jet of a range hood generates coanda effect confining the contaminated air in a certain region. Furthermore, the qualitative relation between the flow rate of the capture air jet and the distribution pattern of the contamination has been discussed.

  • Turbulent natural convective flow and heat transfer in a square enclosure with horizontal partition are investigated numerically. The enclosure is composed of a lower hot and a upper cold horizontal walls and adiabatic vertical walls. Partitions carried with the upward, downward, and both control plates are attached perpendicularly to the one of the vertical insulated walls, respectively. The low Reynolds number $k-\varepsilon$ model is adopted to calculate the turbulent thermal convection. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations have been carried out by varying the length of partition, the position of control plates, and the Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between two horizontal walls and the enclosure height for water(Pr=4.95). When the control plates are attached at the edge of partition, the stability of oscillating flow grows wrose with the increase of Rayleigh number and the partition length. The heat transfer rate has been reducer than that of no control plate due to the restraint of control plates with the increase of Rayleigh number.

  • Some methods were proposed to predict lateral flow due to embankments for road constructions on soft grounds, in which vertical drains were placed. In order to investigate the prediction methods of lateral flow, 200 field monitoring data for embankments in thirteen road construction sites at western and southern coastal areas of the Korean Peninsula were analyzed. For analyzing the relationship between the safety factor of embankment slope and the horizontal displacement in soft grounds where horizontal drain mats were placed, it was reliable to apply the maximum horizontal displacement in soft ground instead of the horizontal displacement at ground surface. The maximum horizontal displacement was developed less than 50mm in fields where the safety factor of slope was more than 1.4, while the one was developed more than 100mm in fields where the safety factor of slope was less than 1.2. In safe fields where the maximum horizontal displacement were developed within 50mm, lateral flow would not happen since shear deformation was not appeared. On the other hand, shear failure would happen in the fields where the maximum horizontal displacement were developed more than 100mm. In such fields, embankments might be continued after some appropriate countermeasures should be prepared. Safe embankments can be performed on soft grounds, in which the stability number is less than 3.0 and the safety factor for bearing is more than 1.7. However, if the stability number is more than 4.3 and the safety factor for bearing is less than 1.2, shear deformation would begin and even shear failure would happen.

  • Field monitoring data for embankments in thirteen road construction sites at coastal area of the Korean Peninsula were analyzed to investigate the characteristics of lateral flow in soft grounds, to which vertical drain methods were applied. First of all, the effect of the embankment scale on the lateral flow was investigated. Thicker soft soils and lager relative embankment scale produced more horizontal displacements in soft grounds. Especially, if thick soft grounds were placed, the relative embankment scale, which was given by the ratio of thickness of soft ground to the bottom width of embankments, became larger and in turn large horizontal displacement was produced. And also higher filling velocity of embankments induced more horizontal displacements in soft grounds. The other major factors affecting the lateral flow in soft ground were the thickness and undrained shear strength of soft grounds, the soil modulus and the stability number. Maximum horizontal displacement was induced by less undrained shear strength and soil modulus of soft grounds. Also more stability numbers produced more maximum horizontal displacements. When the shear deformation does not develop, the stability number was less than 3.0 and the safety factor of bearing was more than 1.7. However, if the stability number was more than 5.14 and the safety factor of bearing was less than 1.0, the unstable shear failure developed in soft ground. 50mm can be recommended as a criterion of the allowable maximum horizontal displacement to prevent the shear deformation in soft ground, while 100mm can be recommended as a criterion of the allowable maximum horizontal displacement to prevent the shear failure in soft ground.

  • Characteristics of flow patterns in horizontal gas-liquid two-phase flow for two different sizes of pipe were investigated based upon a statistical analysis of differential pressure fluctuations at an orifice. The probability density function and the power spectral density function of the traces indicate peculiar shapes depending upon the two-phase flow regime. Mixed and separated flows also could be identified by the autocorrelation function. The transition region from separated flow to mixed flow also could be identified by these statistical properties. The experimental data determined by this method were compared with the flow pattern maps suggested by other investigators. The result indicates that the statistical characteristics of differential pressure fluctuations at orifices may be a useful tool for identifying flow patterns of horizontal gas-liquid two-phase flow.

  • A two-step approach has been used to obtain a new transition criterion for the stratified and nonstratified flow in horizontal pipe: (1) In the first step, a more general expression than the existing models for the flow transition criterion has been derived from the analysis of singular points and neutral stability conditions, or the parallel lines conditions of the transient one-dimensional two- phase flow equations of two-fluid model. (2) In the second step, introducing simplifications and incorporating a parameter into the general expression obtained in the first step to satisfy a number of physical conditions a priori specified, a new simple flow transition criterion for horizontal pipes has been derived. Comparison between results predicted by the present theory with the experimental data and theories in the pipe flow conditions, show good agreement.

  • Natural convection in a wide-gap horizontal annulus is considered, and the transition of flows from steady to oscillatory convection is investigated for the fluid with Pr=0.1. The unsteady streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As Rayleigh number is increased, the steady crescent-shaped flow bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with like-rotating eddies. And afterwards, a transition to an oscillatory multicellular flow with a counter-rotating eddy on the top of the annulus occurs. A transition from steady to an oscillatory flow occurs, but dual solutions and hysteresis phenomena are not observed.
