  • An analytical model that includes the steam condensation effect has been derived and a parametric study has been performed. In addition, a series of experiments were performed and a total of 34 experimental data for the onset of CCFL in nearly horizontal countercurrent two-phase How have been obtained for various flow rates of water. Comparisons of the present CCFL data with slug formation models show that the agreement between the present as well as the existing model and the data is about the same. However, the deviation between the Taitel and Dukler's model predictions and the data is the largest when if j$_{f}$<0.04 m/s. A parametric study of the effect of the steam condensation using the present model shows that, when all local conditions are similar, the model predicted local gas velocities that cause the onset of flooding are slightly lower when condensation occurred. Based on the visual observation and the evaluation of the present work, it has been concluded that the criterion derived for the onset of slug flow can be directly used to predict the onset of inner flooding in nearly horizontal two-phase flow within the experimental ranges of the present work.

  • An experimental investigation on the flow pattern and pressure drop was carried out for both an adiabatic and a diabatic two-phase flow in a horizontal tube with pure refrigerants R134a and R123 and their mixtures as test fluids. The observed flow patterns were compared to the flow pattern map of Kattan et al., which predicted well the present data over the entire regions of mass velocity in this study. The measured frictional pressure drop in the adiabatic experiments increased with an increase in vapor quality and mass velocity These data were compared to various correlations proposed in the past for the frictional pressure drop. The Chisholm correlation underpredicted the present data both for pure fluids and their mixtures in the entire mass velocity range of 150 to 600 kg/m$^2$s covered in the measurements, white the Friedel correlation was found to overpredict the present data in the stratified and stratified-wavy flow region, and to underpredict in the annular flow region.

  • Natural convection of a fluid with intermediate Prand시 number of Pr=0.2 in a horizontal annulus is considered, and the bifurcation phenomena and chaotic flows are numerically investigated. The unsteady two-dimensional streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. The steady downward flow with two counter-rotating eddies bifurcates to a simple periodic flow with a fundamental frequency. And afterwards, second Hopf bifurcation occurs, and a quasi-periodic flow with two incommensurable frequencies appears. However, a new time-periodic flow is established after experiencing quasi-periodic states. As Rayleigh number is increased further, the chaotic flow regime is reached after a sequence of successive Hopf bifurcation to quasi-periodic and chaotic flow regimes. A scenario similar to the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse scenario of the onset of chaos is observed.

  • Natural convection of air in a horizontal annulus with the inner cylinder cooled by the application of a constant heat flux and the isothermally heated outer cylinder is considered. The bifurcation phenomenon of flow patterns and the heat transfer characteristics are numerically investigated. The zero initial condition induces a unicellular flow in a half annulus. A bicellular flow consisting of two counter-rotating eddies in a half annulus can be obtained above a certain critical Rayleigh number. A transition from the bicellular to the unicellular flow occurs with a decrease in Rayleigh number. Hysteresis phenomena have not been observed. In the regime of dual flows, the overall Nusselt number of the bicellular flow is greater than that of the unicellular flow.

  • The information on the heat transfer characteristics, flow pattern and pressure drop, are very important for the desing of general heat exchanger, refrigerating system, air conditioning system and energy recovery system. In these systems, water or lubricating oil contained in working fluid affects greatly the flow and heat transfer condition and this phenomena must be considered in the practical design. An experiment has been performed for studying the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the forced convective horizontal flow of R-113 under the range of the liquid single phase state to the boiling flow state. Basic experimental results are obtained in the case that water or lubricating oil does not contaminate in the test fluid. Experimental results are as follows; (1) The local heat transfer coefficients in the nucleate boiling region and transition boiling region are almostly ten times as large as that of liquid single phase flow. (2) The measured heat transfer coefficient in the present experimental range is relatively agreed well with the predicted value from the various experimental results for the boiling flow.

  • Numerical analysis has been carried out for two-dimensional steady and unsteady mixed convection in the annulus between co-rotating horizontal cylinders with a heated inner cylinder. The ratio of annulus gap($\sigma$) is taken from 1 to 10 and the order of mixed-convection parameter B(=Gr/(1+Re)$^2$) varies from 10$^4$to $10^0$. The flow patterns over this parameter range are steady multicellular, oscillatory multicellular or steady unicellular. The addition of co-rotating of both cylinders stabilizes the flow in the annulus and weakens the unsteadiness. Even in the large values of rotating parameter such as of $10^0$/($\sigma$=2) and 10$^2$($\sigma$=10), the flow pattern becomes asymptotic to the steady unicellular flow, like as in the rigid-body rotating flow.

  • Two-phase loop systems using the latent heat capacity of their working fluids can meet the increasing power requirements and are well suited to thermal management systems of future large applications, due to its abilities to handle large heat loads and to provide them at uniform temperatures regardless of the changes in the heat loads. Therefore some experiments on the effect of the gas and liquid superficial velocities, $j_G,\;j_L$ on flow pattern transition, void fraction and frictional pressure loss were performed on a co-current air-water flow in an adiabatic horizontal tube. The flow patterns were depended on the superficial velocity of each phase. It snowed that the increasing $j_L$, resulted in a significant increase in the frictional pressure loss for all flow patterns, at a constant $j_G$. The experimental results were also evaluated with some of existing models and correlations.

  • A flow uniformity in a duct cooler of duct system of FGD(Flue Gas Desulfurization) linking a reheater and a absorber has been investigated in the present study. For this purpose, the flow characteristics according to the geometry of a vertical and horizontal vane in a curved duct of the duct system has been examined with the aid of a numerical simulation. The results indicate that the vertical vane with a little deflection toward a recirculation region makes the flow distribution in the duct cooler more uniform than that without deflection, and horizontal vane does not effect the change of the flow distribution for an angle of inclination. The mean flow uniform factor shows its maximum for duct system without the vane(case NP) and its minimum for the vertical vane with a little deflection(case P-0.8-0) .

  • A mechanistic model for void fraction prediction with improved interfacial friction factor in nearly horizontal tubes has been proposed in connection with the development of a condensation model package for the passive auxiliary feedwater system of the Korean Advanced Power Reactor Plus. The model is based on two-phase momentum balance equations to cover various types of fluids, flow conditions, and inclination angles of the flow channel in a separated flow. The void fraction is calculated without any discontinuity at flow regime transitions by considering continuous changes of the interfacial geometric characteristics and interfacial friction factors across three typical separated flows, namely stratified-smooth, stratified-wavy, and annular flows. An evaluation of the proposed model against available experimental data covering various types of fluids and flow regimes showed a satisfactory agreement.

  • Two-Phase flow pattern and pressure drop data were obtained for pure refrigerants R134a and R123 and their mixtures as test fluids in a horizontal tube. The flow pattern is observed through tubular sight glasses located at inlet and outlet of the test section. The flow map of Baker developed for air-water two-phase flow at atmospheric pressure failed to predict the observed flow patterns at the higher value of the mass velocity used in the present study. The map of Kattan et al. predicted the data well over the entire region of mass velocity selected in the present study. The measured pressure drop increased with an increase in vapor quality and mass velocity. A new two-phase multiplier was developed from a dimensional analysis of the frictional pressure drop data measured in the present experiment. This new multiplier was found successfully to correlate the frictional pressure drop.
