  • A numerical and experimental investigation has been carried out to understand a characteristic of natural convection within a horizontal non-circular annulus. A finite-difference method has been used to solve the governing equations numerically. The effect of Rayleigh number. Prandtl number, aspect ratio and diameter ratio is studied analytically. The ranges of the parameters studied herein are Rayleigh number from $10^3$ to $2{\times}10^4$, Prandtl number from 0.1 to 10, aspect ratio from 0.25 to 1.5 and diameter ratio from 1.5 to 9.0. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer is used to obtain isothermal fringes for a diameter ratio Do/Di=2.6 and aspect ratio H/L=0.75 experimentally. A comparison between the experimental and numerical results under similar conditions shows good agreement.

  • A horizontal mantle heat exchanger for a thermosyphon-driven SDHW(solar domestic hot water) was numerically simulated and fluid flow and heat transfer in the annulus of the mantle heat exchanger were quantitatively investigated. The Reynolds number, the location of the inlet, and the gap of the annulus were selected as the important design variables. The effects of the design variables on the heat transfer characteristics were thoroughly studied. Based on the numerical results, a correlation for predicting the heat transfer coefficient was suggested as the conclusion of this study.

  • This study investigates the bifurcation sequence to chaos in a horizontal annulus with a constant heat flux wall. After the first Hopf bifurcation from a steady to a simple time-periodic flow with a fundamental frequency, quasi-periodic flows with two or three incommensurable frequencies appear. A reverse transition from a quasi-periodic flow to a simple periodic flow is observed with increase of Rayleigh number. And finally, chaotic convection is established after appearance of three incommensurable frequencies at a high Rayleigh number. Simple periodic flows exist between quasi periodic flows. The transition route to chaos of the present simulations follows the Ruelle-Takens route.

  • Natural convection of a fluid with intermediate Prand시 number of Pr=0.2 in a horizontal annulus is considered, and the bifurcation phenomena and chaotic flows are numerically investigated. The unsteady two-dimensional streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. The steady downward flow with two counter-rotating eddies bifurcates to a simple periodic flow with a fundamental frequency. And afterwards, second Hopf bifurcation occurs, and a quasi-periodic flow with two incommensurable frequencies appears. However, a new time-periodic flow is established after experiencing quasi-periodic states. As Rayleigh number is increased further, the chaotic flow regime is reached after a sequence of successive Hopf bifurcation to quasi-periodic and chaotic flow regimes. A scenario similar to the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse scenario of the onset of chaos is observed.

  • Transition to chaotic convection is investigated for natural convection of a fluid with Pr=0.1 in a wide-gap horizontal annuls. The unsteady two-dimensional stream-function-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As the Rayleigh number is increased, the steady 'downward flow' bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with a fundamental frequency, and afterwards a period-doubling bifurcation occurs. As the Rayleigh number is increased further, the chaotic flow regime is reached after a sequence of successive Hopf bifurcation to quasi-periodic and chaotic flow regimes. The route to chaos shows the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse scenario. The flow of chaotic regime displays complex coalescence and separation of eddies in the side and lower region of the annulus.

  • Natural convection heat transfer has been investigated numerically in the vertical annulus filled withsaturated porous material for the aspect ratio less than unity. The inner wall of the annulus is exposed to constant heat flux condition and the outer wall is cooled to keep isothermal condition. The upper and the lower horizontal wall are assumed to be insulated. Under conditions ranging 50 .leq. Ra .leq. 10000, 1 .leq. RD .leq. 12, the characteristics of flow and heat transfer have been investigated. The results show that average Nusselt numbers increase when the radius ratio increases and the multicellular flows are not detected under the present conditions. Isothermal lines are plotted within the porous media. Temperatures of the inner wall with constant heat flux conditions and the local heat flux rate of the cooled outer wall with constant temperature are also obtained.

  • Natural convection in the annulus between a horizontal conducting tube and a cylinder with spacers has been studied by 2-dimensional numerical method with finite difference techniques. The effects of Rayleigh number, conductivities of conducting tube and spacer, and position of spacers were studied analytically. In case of vertical spacers, the maximum local Nusselt number appears at ${\theta}{\approx}50^{\circ}$ in a conducting tube and ${\theta}{\approx}30^{\circ}$ in an outer cylinder, The local Nusselt numbers show positive values on the lower spacer, but negative values on the surface of the upper spacer. In case of horizontal spacers, the flow over the spacer is more active than that of under the spacer as the Rayleigh number increases. The maximum local Nusselt appeares at ${\theta}=180^{\circ}$ in a conducting tube and at ${\theta}=0^{\circ}$ in an outer cylinder. The local Nusselt numbers show positive values on the upward surface, but negative values on the downward surface of spacer. As the dimensionless conductivity increases, the mean Nusselt number remarkably increases at $K_w/K_f<48$ and show almost even at $K_w/K_f{\ge}48$. The mean Nusselt number of a conducting tube with vertical spacers is 5.12 percent less and with horizontal spacers is 11.33 percent less than that of a conducting tube without spacer at $Ra=10^4$, Pr = 0.7 and $K_w/K_f=48$.

  • Single phase and condensation heat transfer characteristics of ammonia in a horizontal tube have been investigated experimentally The horizontal test section is composed of smooth SUS316 tube for refrigerant flow, surrounding annulus for water flow, and temperature and Pressure measuring sensors. For single phase test, subcooled ammonia mass flux was varied from 320 to 501 kg/mrs and temperature was varied from 18 to $47^{\circ}C$. For condensation test, mass flux and saturation temperature were varied from 86 to 128 kg/$m^2$s and 34 to $47^{\circ}C$, respectively. The equations of Gnielinski Soliman et al., Traviss et at., Cavallini and Zecchin, Shah, Chen et al., Tandon et al., and Chilli and Anand were compared with the experimental data. New correlations are proposed based on the experimental results and the absolute mean deviation of the experimental data becomes 1.0% for single phase test and 4.9% for condensation test.

  • When a valve prosthesis is to be implanted in the aortic position, simple interrupted suture, figure-of- eight suture, or horizontal mattress suture technique is used as a suture method. However, the suture techniques may be unacceptable for aortic valve replacement in patients with friable annulus caused by some lesions, such as endocarditis and degenerative change. We used an alternative technique for the aortic vlave replacement in 4 patients with valve endocarditis, ) patients with degenerative valvular lesion, and 1 with rheumatic valvular disease. Mattress sutures through the annulus were placed with pledgets on the ventricular side of the annulus, whi h resulted in implantation of the prosthesis at a supra-annular level. Mechanical valves of 21 mm or larger were implanted in the supra-annular position in all patients and there was no impeded motion of leaflets during the follow-up period of mean 13.3 mouths. The transvalvular pressure gradient was less than 6 mm Hg in 3 patients and 20 to 40 mm Hg in 5 patients. The supra-annular implantation of mechanical aortic valve using a vertical mattress suture technique may be a useful alternative method of aortic valve replacement for the selected patients with friable or destroyed aortic annulus.
