  • Similar to the $^{42}K$ uptake, $^{86}Rb$ uptake by the roots of Hordeum distichum grown in the hydroponic culture was negatively correlated with the concentration of K supplied previously, showing that $^{86}Rb$ can be used for the K-bioassay. $^{86}Rb$ having longer half life (18.86 day) than $^{42}K$ (12.36 hr) allowed the use of larger number of root samples. $^{86}Rb$ uptake of 3 years old Citrus unshiu Marc. grown in water culture decreased drastically with the increase of K concentration of the culture solution, thus demonstrating that the nutrition status of K for citrus trees can be diagnosed by K-bioassay using $^{86}Rb$ tracer. $^{86}Rb$ uptake by the excised roots of Hordeum distichum grown in the pot with different K fertilizations was well correlated with the exchangeable K in soil. The amount of exchangeable K in soil for the optimal plant growth can be determined by its relationship. $^{42}K$ and $^{86}Rb-uptake$ by the Hordeum distichum roots were markedly inhibited by $5{\times}10^{-3}\; M$ KCN in the bioassay solution, indicating that uptake is energy-dependent. There was no significant relationship between K content in citrus leaves and K concentration in the water-culture medium. It is concluded that K-bioassay is a potentially useful tool for determining of K requirement in citrus trees.

  • This study carried out to change ${\alpha}-amylase$ activity and isozymes in barley during germination in the dark and red light. The specific activity of ${\alpha}-amylase$ increased during the germination in the dark, giving 355.0 and 523.7 units/mg protein at 3 and 5 days, and the activity was increased by the red light up to 48 and 15% at 3 and 5 days of germination, respectively. The ratio of ${\alpha}-amylase$ I and II was approximately 95 : 5 at both 3 and 5 days of germination in the dark while the different ratio was found by the red light i.e. 60 : 40 and 90 : 10 at 3 and 5 days of germination, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to attain the selection information on grain characters of malting barley. Indirect selection, making use of information on grain thickness, seemed to be an effective method for the selection of 1, 000 grain weight, grain hull and grain yield which were directly affected by grain thickness. Grain yield which had a direct effect on grain, meal and protein content seemed to be an effective selection indicator for them, however, a better method is expected upon improvement of indirect effects of hull and grain yield.

  • This experiment was carried out to examine the effect of water stress at anthesis on the grain maturation and to interpret the immediate and resulting growth response in barley. The dry weight of root, stem, internode, flag leaf and grain under water stress was remarkably more reduced than that under no-water stress, respectively. Water stressed plants had heavier grain dry weight during 7.14 days after water stress than that under no-water stress, but this early response was reversed significantly in the later period. The relative turgidity of organs except grain under water stress was severely lowered than that under no-water stress. The net photosynthsis by rewatering after water stress had been kept at the lower level than that under no-water stress ti1l the late maturation.
