  • Cold drawn(CD) bars feature superb surface roughness, dimensional precision, and straightness. They are used in the manufacture of automotive parts and home electrical appliances. Two cross-roll straighteners have been used to manufacture CD bars for these industries. This study investigated the variation of the gap size between the two cross-rolls. It was found that changes in the gap size have a large influence on the residual stress and plastic deformation. Finite element method(FEM) simulations were performed to study the influence of the gap size on the residual stress in CD bars, and experiments were performed to verify the FEM results. The residual stresses were measured with X-ray diffraction in both the axial and the hoop directions.

  • The postbuckling behavior and failure of composite cylinders subjected to external hydrostatic pressure are investigated by a finite element method and test. A nonlinear finite element program, ACOS, is used for the postbuckling progressive failure analysis of composite cylinders. A total of 5 carbon/epoxy composite cylinders were fabricated and tested to verify the finite element results. For comparison, analyses by MSC/NASTRAN and MSC/MARC are additionally conducted. Among the softwares, the finite element program, ACOS, predicts the buckling loads the best with about 11 to 26% deviation from experimental results except for one specimen. While the finite element analysis shows global buckling modes with 4 waves in hoop direction, in the experiments the local buckling appears first and results in the final failure without global buckling.

  • The purpose of this research is to understand the importance and structure of underwear which is the closest cloth to the body. Scope of this research is from middle of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century. Firstly, I studied background of the times and change of women's status and duty. Secondly, I examined the outer garment closely by the ideal beauty of each period based on the study, and thirdly I looked into structure ways of underwear. Then lastly, I took a close look about the relation of outer garment and underwear, comparing with and researching both. I studied this research, focusing on corset, crinoline and bustle based on main characters such as reform and transform among several functions of underwear. The research results are such as follows. First of all, when women's social and economic status was subjected to men, women had worn corset and fashionable dresses even though there was many object movements and vices in women's garment. Secondly, according to those movements, the ideal beauty had changed little in the same sort emphasizing on breast and hip. Thirdly, structure method of underwear changed by ideal beauty and shape of outer garment. Due to increasing sports participation, improvement of women's position, achievement of practical use, women used more drawers and stopped wearing hoop. And the weight of underwear like combination and suspender attached to corset had decreased and advanced into the more practical way. Because of industrialization, function seemed to be granted by technology development, social position change of femininity.

  • Eight RC bridge plers have been made on a 1/3.4 scale model and have been tested in a quasi-static cyclic load so as to investigate their seismic performance. The ultimate objective of this experimental study is to investigate the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete plers, which have been widely used for urban transportation facilities in Korea. Improtant test parameters are hoop ratio, axial load, load pattern, and etc. And noninear behaviors of test columns have been evaluated through their yield and ultimate strength, energy dissipation, ductility and load-deflection characteristics under quasi-static cyclic loads. From the quasi-static tests on 8 bridge piers, it is concluded that energy dissipation, ultimate strength and curvature for a given displacement factor ${\mu}={\Delta}/{\Delta}_y$ are higher for the seismically designed columns than for the nonseismically designed columns.

  • The now velocity distribution at inlet of diesel Particulate filter (DPF) which is connected to each curved duct was simulated using $STAR-CD^{(R)}$. Three kinds of models which describe the shapes of the curved duct ware used for the CFD simulation. The simulation results were compared with the experimental data of velocity distribution which was obtained using a Pitot tube and 2-D positioning machine. At the $90^{\circ}$ curved connecting condition, the CFD simulation results of flow velocity distribution at inlet of the DPF showed a horse hoop shape shifted from the axial center line of the DPF. The CFD simulation results agree reasonably with those of the experiments.

  • This work is concerned with the analysis of stress corrosion cracking(SCC) behavior of Alloy 600 nozzle penetration mock-up according to a residual stress induced by a dissimilar metal welding(DMW) in a nuclear reactor pressure vessel. The effects of the dimension and materials of the nozzle penetration on the deformation and the residual stress induced by DMW were investigated using a finite element analysis(FEA). The inner diameter(ID) change of the nozzle by DMW and its dependance on the design variables, calculated by FEA, were well consistent with those measured from the mock-up. Accelerated SCC tests were performed for three mock-ups with different wall thicknesses in a highly acidic solution to investigate mainly the effect of the residual stress on the SCC behavior of Alloy 600 nozzle. From a destructive examination of the mock-up after the tests, the SCC behavior of the nozzle was fairly related with the residual stress induced by DMW : axial cracks were found in the ID surface of the nozzle within the J-weld region where the highest tensile hoop stress was predicted by FEA, while circumferential cracks were observed beyond both J-weld root and toe where the highest tensile axial stress was expected.

  • This study focuses on the design of the tapered joints of a wind power turbine. The main variables of the tapered joint are the transmitted torque, shaft diameter, contact area of the tapered ring, and tightening torque of the bolts, which applies a compressive pressure from the hub to the shaft. The stress distribution of the taper fit was calculated under axisymmetric plane strain conditions because of the small taper angle. The axial displacement of the clamp can be calculated from the radial elastic deformation and the taper angle. The stress field of each ring is obtained from the cylinder stress equation. To verify the accuracy of the calculation, finite element (FE) analysis was performed, and the results of the calculation and FE analysis were compared. The hoop stress of the tapered surface showed a discrepancy of approximately 10, but the trends of the stress distributions of each component and the relative movement obtained by FE analysis were in good agreement with the analytical calculation results.

  • A pressure vessel is a cylindrical container that accommodates a pressurized fluid. In real life, there are propane canisters and butane canisters. According to data from the Korea Gas Safety Corporation, The number of domestic gas accidents is average 33 cases of domestic gas accidents occurred per year and 20.8 for mobile butane gases. The purpose of this study was to investigate a method to prevent this kind of explosion. Common studies include forced drain through safe holes, forced separation of butane canisters, and manufacturing of high-strength steel. This paper uses a concept that reduces stress inside the cylinder using prestressed method that precede compression. In other words, install a long liner in both ends of the pressure vessel. I want to develop a safety device that acts like a gas intermediate valve.

  • Axisymmetric modeling of the nuclear containment building has been often employed in practice to estimate structural behavior for the axisymmetric loadings, where the axisymmetric approximation is required for the actual non-axisymmetric tendon arrangements in the dome. In the preceding companion paper, some procedures are proposed for the domestic CANDU and KSNP type containments that can implement the actual 3-dimensional tendon stiffness and prestressing effect into the axisymmetric model. In this paper, the proposed schemes are verified through some numerical examples comparing the results of the actual 3-dimensional model with those of some axisymmetric models. The results of the proposed axisymmetric analyses show relatively good agreements with the actual structural behavior especially for the CANDU type. Also, it is shown that proper level of the prestressing in a hoop direction plays an important role to predict the actual prestressing effect in the axisymmetric dome modeling. Finally, correction factors are discussed that can revise some approximations introduced in the derivations.
