Many studies for improving the railway vehicle's performance and comfort such as speed, weight and noise are currently in progress. Improving the structural characteristics of the vehicle for greater noise insulation is considered important for reducing disturbance due to noise, but measuring transmission loss entails large costs. This study explores an alternative method for estimating and measuring the railway vehicle's transmission loss that involves on applying the numerical analysis coupled with scaled reverberation chamber measurement. The transmission loss measurement using scaled reverberation chamber was performed after the compensation value was found through 1mm thickness(1t) specimen. For numerical analysis, a commercially available acoustics solver VA ONE was used. The proposed method is found to lead to transmission loss measurement comparable to the measurements based on large-scale reverberation chamber. Thus, it can be argued that a reliable method has been developed for measuring railway vehicle's transmission loss.

This study is focused on the investigation of the modal characteristics of the preliminary models of science technology satellite-3 (STSAT-3). Prior to the final decision of the composite structure model, several candidate structure models have been developed so as to find the most qualified structures with respect to the satellite structure systems' requirements and then utilize the information achieved to a real design. The main structure is composed of fiber reinforced composite faced honeycomb sandwich panel whose modal characteristics are found and compared to each other by means of finite element numerical analyses. Results from the current study demonstrate that a rectangular box shape having supporting inner panel shows relatively higher fundamental mode frequencies than octagonal box shape and etc., and regardless of the structure model shape tested herein, the fundamental mode turns out lateral bending mode.
Thermal control of satellite is mainly based on passive ways, such as the radiator made of aluminum honeycomb core with aluminum skins and OSR (Optical Solar Reflector). Additionally, for the thermal control of high dissipation unit, the aluminum doubler and heat pipe are utilized. Recently, efforts to find advanced thermal materials have been carried out to enhance heat rejection capability without increasing satellite size, weight and cost. This paper handles the carbon composites have high thermal conductivity with light weigh and have been considered as future thermal control materials to replace aluminum based radiator and doubler. Thermal analysis of satellite panel using APG(Annealed Pyrolytic Graphite) and carbon-carbon composites were performed and temperature contours were compared with the conventional thermal control methods.
This paper describes the results of experiments and numerical simulation studies on the low-velocity impact damage of two different sandwich composite panels for application to bodyshell and floor structure of the BIMODAL tram vehicle. Square test samples of 100mm sides were subjected to low-velocity impact loading using an instrumented testing machine at four impact energy levels. Part of this work presented is focused on the finite element analysis of low-velocity impact response onto a sandwich composite panels. It is based on the application of explicit finite element (FE) analysis codes LS-DYNA 3D to study the impact response of sandwich structures under low-velocity impact conditions. Material testing was conducted to determine the input parameters for the metallic and composite material model, and the effective equivalent damage model for the orthotropic honeycomb materials. Numerical and experimental results showed a good agreement for damage area and the depth of indentation of sandwich composite panels created by the impact loading.
This paper describes the standardized finite element model for carbody structures of railway vehicle made of sandwich composites. Recently, sandwich composites were widely used to railway vehicle due to the improvement of energy efficiency, high specific stiffness and strength, weight reduction and space saving in korea. Therefore, structural integrity should be verified using finite element analysis prior to the manufacture of composite railway vehicle. The standardized finite element model for composite carbody structures was introduced through comparing the results of real structural test under vertical, compressive, twisting load and natural frequency test of various railway vehicles in this study. The results show that the quadratic shell element is suitable to model the reinforced metal frame used to improve the flexural stiffness of sandwich panel compared to beam element, and layered shell and solid element are recommended to model the skin and honeycomb core of sandwich panel compared to sandwich shell element. Also, the proposed standard finite element model has the merit of being applied to crashworthiness problem without modifications of finite element model.

Development of light-weight high speed train (HST) based on distributed motor control with the top speed of 350 km/hr has engendered a need for abatement of the interior noise of the train cabin. The development of noise abatement measures is crucial at the design stage of the train car since the noise transmission characteristics of the car structure directly influences the cabin interior noise. Since the transmission loss measurement using the entire car structure is often not feasible, especially at the initial stages of the train development, investigation of transmission characteristics using small-scale reverberation chamber can furnish useful alternative source of predicting the noise level. In the present study, white noise is generated at source and transmission loss estimated by performing measurement of a specimen in a scaled reverberation chamber. Comparison of measured values with the previously derived numerical values show good agreement in the overall trend but appreciable quantitative differences still remain.
The present study investigates the employing of piezoelectric patches in active control of a sandwich plate. Indeed, the active control and optimal patch distribution on this structure are presented together. A sandwich plate with honeycomb core and composite reinforced by carbon nanotubes in facesheet layers is considered so that the optimum position of actuator/sensor patches pair is guaranteed to suppress the vibration of sandwich structures. The sandwich panel consists of a search space which is a square of 200 × 200 mm with a numerous number of candidates for the optimum position. Also, different dimension of square and rectangular plates to obtain the optimal placement of piezoelectric actuator/senor patches pair is considered. Based on genetic algorithm and LQR, the optimum position of patches and fitness function is determined, respectively. The present study reveals that the efficiency and performance of LQR control is affected by the optimal placement of the actuator/sensor patches pair to a large extent. It is also shown that an intelligent selection of the parent, repeated genes filtering, and 80% crossover and 20% mutation would increase the convergence of the algorithm. It is noted that a fitness function is achieved by collection actuator/sensor patches pair cost functions in the same position (controllability). It is worth mentioning that the study of the optimal location of actuator/sensor patches pair is carried out for different boundary conditions of a sandwich plate such as simply supported and clamped boundary conditions.

Low-velocity impact on composite sandwich panel has been investigated. Contact force is computed from a proposed modified Hertzian contact law. The Hertzian contact law is constructed by adjusting numerical value of the exponent and reducing the through-the- thickness elastic constant of honeycomb core. The equivalent transverse elastic constant is calculated from the rule of mixture. Nonlinear equation to calculate the contact force is solved by the Newton-Raphson method and time integration is done by the Newmark-beta method. A finite element program for the low-velocity impact analysis is coded by implementing these techniques and an 18-node assumed strain solid element. Behaviors of composite sandwich panels subjected to low-velocity impact are analyzed for various cases with different geometry and lay-ups. It has been found that the present code with the proposed contact law can predict measured contact forces and contact times for most cases within reasonable error bounds.
Sandwich panels with three different joint configurations were tested to design a novel sandwich joint structure that can effectively support both the tensile and compressive loads. The sandwich core was mainly aluminum flex honeycomb but the PMI foam core was limitedly applied to the ramp area which is transition part from sandwich to solid laminate. The face of sandwich panel was made of carbon fiber composite. For configuration 1, the composite flange and the sandwich panel were cocured. For configurations 2 and 3, an aluminum flange was fastened to the solid laminate by HI-LOK pins and adhesive. The average compressive failure loads of configurations 1, 2, and 3 were 295, 226, and 291 kN, respectively, and the average tensile failure loads were 47.3 (delamination), 83.7 (bolt failure), and 291 (fixture damage) kN, respectively. Considering the compressive failure loads only, both the configurations 1 and 3 showed good performance. However, the configuration 1 showed delamination in the corner of the composite flange under tension at early stage of loading. Therefore, it was confirmed that the structure that can effectively support tension and compressive loads at the same time is the configuration 3 which used a mechanically fastened aluminum flange so that there is no risk of delamination at the corner.
