The superconducting Homopolar motor is manufactured and tested. Homopolar motor system is simple and solid as the field coil of the motor is fixed near the stator coil without rotating system. In this paper, a 5 kW fully superconducting homopolar motor which has high temperature superconducting armature and field coils is manufactured and tested in liquid nitrogen. The critical current test results of the used 2G superconducting wire, pancake coil for rotor winding and race-track coils for armature winding are reported. Also, the test result of rotating and operating performance is presented. The operating frequency is to be 5 Hz for low-speed rotating. The developed fully superconducting Homopolar motor is the world's first.
In comparison with conventional motors, Superconducting Homopolar Synchronous Motors (SHSMs) have advantages that it generates high magnetic field by superconducting winding. Therefore, superconducting coil used in SHSM can reduce the motor size and enhance the motor efficiency for high torque applications under the space constraints for propulsion system. During the design process of SHSM, it is required to evaluate the performance of initial design model, that is accurately analyzed using 3D magnetic field modeling large air-gap and flux distribution of axial direction is properly taken into account. In this paper, we analyze magnetic field of a homopolar motor with a 4-pole homopolar rotor and a stator of 3 phase windings. The field analysis is done using 3D finite element analysis which can reflect the end effect and overhang winding. And we extract mutual inductances between a rotor wind and the 3 stator windings. The extracted inductances are used for evaluation of overall motor performances that are calculated with generalized circuit theory of electrical machines.
In general, in most case of high temperature superconducting (HTS) rotating machinery, HTS field coil is rotated. HTS homopolar motor field coil is nat necessary to be rotated and the torque of motor is not strongly related with the field coil. Therefore, HTS homopolar motor has a superior mechanical stability comparing with other HTS rotating machines. These advantages can make the design of HTS field coil and cryostat much more simple. In this paper, HTS field coil was fabricated and tested. Before test, authors habe estimated the critical current of HTS field coil at 77K by simulation using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software and power law equation. The experiment details and results are presented in this paper, and discussed. The field windings are made with HTS Bi-2223 wire which operates at 77K.

Superconducting motor has a lot of benefits from high power density for ship propulsions, so a number of research project are in progress worldwide. Despite of all the benefits, there is always a difficulty of cryo-moving part for conventional air-core superconducting synchronous motors. In order to get rid of this moving cryogenic part, we propose a homopolar superconducting synchronous motor, which has high temperature superconducting armature and field coils. The rotor is supposed to be made of iron only and excited by the stationary HTS field coils. The stationary field coils make the cooling system simple and easy to realize because there is no cryo-moving part. A design result of a 10 hp homopolar synchronous motor is presented in this paper. The self and mutual inductance of the motor having the size of air gap as variable parameter are calculated by a 3-dimemsional finite element method. The value of design variables such as the dimension of a motor and the number of turns, etc. is decided by performing the coordinate transformation of the calculated inductance. The operating frequency is supposed to be below 5 Hz for low rotating speed which is needed for a purpose of ship propulsion. Low frequency also has the benefit of low AC losses.

This paper introduces a new self-bearing motor which combines a homopolar step motor and a passive magnetic bearing. Compared with conventional self-bearing motors which are mostly based on the theory of active magnetic bearings and therefore have some difficulties in design of the complicated flux distribution and control of the levitation force and the torque independently, the proposed self-bearing motor has a very simple and novel structure and operating principle. for the levitation, it works just like passive magnetic bearings which use the repulsive force between permanent magnets. On the other hand, its rotation principle is quite similar to that of a conventional homopolar step motor. In this paper, we introduce the basic structure and the operating principle in detail, and show some results of FEM analysis to predict the performance of the proposed self-bearing motor and further, to get the optimal design parameters.
Superconducting synchronous motors compared with conventional motors can reduce the motor size and enhance the motor efficiency for low-speed and high torque applications under the space constraints for propulsion system. Especially, homopolar superconducting synchronous motors (HSSMs) need less superconductor and lower magnetic flux density in superconductor field coil than air-cored superconducting synchronous motors (ASSMs). In addition, mechanical structure is more simplified and stability is increased because the superconductor field coil of HSSMs is not rotated in operation. In this paper, we present the outline of HSSMs including structure, characteristics and operational principles with the conceptual design of 5MW HSSM.

This paper introduces a step motor with a passively levitated rotor which comprises a homopolar step motor and a passive magnetic bearing. Compared with conventional self-bearing motors which are mostly based on the active magnetic bearing technology, the proposed motor has a very simple structure and operating principle. For the levitation, it works just like passive magnetic bearings which use the repulsive force between permanent magnets. Halbach array is used to increase the bearing stiffness. On the other hand, its rotation principle is just the same with that of conventional motors. In this paper, we introduce the design scheme to avoid the flux interference possibly produced by electromagnets and permanent magnets, and show some results of FEM analysis to predict the performance of the proposed motor.

The 4-pole linear homopolar synchronous motor (LHSM), so called linear inductor motor, is composed of the figure-of-eight shaped 3-phase armature windings, DC field windings, and the segmented secondary with the transverse bar track. To reduce the calculation time, the simplified 3D finite element model with equivalent reluctance and/or permanent magnet is presented. To obtain a clear understanding, propriety and usefulness of the developed model, we compare with the results of simplified 3D FEA, general 3D FEA and test. Consequently, the results of simplified and 3D FEM analysis are nearly identical, but much larger than that of static test at d-axis armature excitation. Therefore the improved FEA model, such as full model with half slot, is needed for the precise analysis.
The LHSM is the combined electromagnetic propulsion and levitation, braking and guidance system for Maglev. In this paper, the LHSM has the figure-of-eight shaped $3{\phi}$ armature windings, the field winding, and segmented secondary having transverse bar track. we treat of the development - design, analysis - of a combined electromagnetic propulsion/levitation systems, LHSM.
The 4-pole LHSM was composed of the figure-of-eight shaped 3-phase armature windings. DC field windings, and the segmented secondary with the transverse bar track. These parameters were computed from the analytical expressions and examined from FEM analysis.
