  • To control the motion generated by a compliant mechanism the design method using specified geometrical advantage is proposed. The optimization problem is formulated to minimize the difference between the specified and the current geometrical advantage of a mechanism and topology optimization is applied to determine the layout of a mechanism. The results of several test problems including a displacement converter design and a gripper design are compared with a multi-criteria model and show that the design of an accurate compliant mechanism with specified geometrical advantage can be obtained.

  • The uncertainty often observed in experimental strengths of masonry constituents makes critical the selection of the appropriate inputs in finite element analysis of complex masonry buildings, as well as requires modelling the building ultimate load as a random variable. On the other hand, the utilization of expensive Monte Carlo simulations to estimate collapse load probability distributions may become computationally impractical when a single analysis of a complex building requires hours of computer calculations. To reduce the computational cost of Monte Carlo simulations, direct computer calculations can be replaced with inexpensive Response Surface (RS) models. This work investigates the use of RS models in Monte Carlo analysis of complex masonry buildings with random input parameters. The accuracy of the estimated RS models, as well as the good estimations of the collapse load cumulative distributions obtained via polynomial RS models, show how the proposed approach could be a useful tool in problems of technical interest.

  • As it takes very long time for the Transient Liquid Phase(TLP) bonding, we tried to reduce the bonding time by changing insert material for the high diffusivity element. On this study boron powder was doped as a insert material on the bonding surface of Rene 80 superalloy, and diffusion treated at 1150.deg.C under vacuum. On this method differently from the TLP bonding the insert material was not melted during bonding but only the base metal reacted with the boron was inducedly melted. Therefore, as this bonding mechanism is different from the existing ones, it is suggested as a Melting Induced Diffusion Bonding. When this process was used for the diffusion bonding, the bonding time including homogenization decreased greatly compared to the conventional TLP bonding.

  • Analysis of structures which are composed of numerous repeated unit structures can be simplified by using homogenized properties. If the unit structure is repeated in one direction, the whole structure may be regarded as a beam. Once the effective stiffness is obtained from the analysis of the unit structure in a proper way, the effort for the detail modeling of the global structure is not required, and the real structure can be replaced simply with a beam. This study proposes a kinematical periodicity constraint to be imposed on the FE model of the unit structure, which improves the accuracy of the effective stiffness. The method is employed to a one dimensionally arrayed 3D structure containing periodically repeated unsymmetrical holes. It is demonstrated that the deformation behavior of the homogenized beam agrees well with that of the real structure.

  • In this study, the topology optimization is applied to the design of a piezoelectric microactuator satisfying the specific mean transduction ratio(MTR). The optimization problem is formulated to minimize the difference between the specified and the current mean transduction ratio. In order to analyze the response of the piezoelectric-structure coupled system, both the structural and the electric potential are considered in the finite element method. The optimization problem is resolved by using Sequential Linear Programming(SLP) and the results of test problems show that the design of a piezoelectric microactuator with specified mean transduction ratio can be obtained.

  • A compliant mechanism is a mechanism that produces its motion by the flexibility of some or all of its members when input force or thermal load is applied. Whereas the topology optimizations based on homogenization and SIMP parameterization have been successfully applied for compliant mechanism design, ESO approach has been hardly considered yet for the optimization of these types of systems. In this paper, traditional ESO method is adopted to achieve the optimum design of a compliant mechanism for thermal load, since AESO method cannot consider the effect of both heat conduction and convection. Sensitivity number, a criterion for element removal in traditional ESO, was newly defined for input thermal loading. The procedure has been tested in numerical applications and compared with the results obtained by other methods to validate these approaches.

  • In this paper, the polarization of piezoelectric materials is considered to improve actuation since the piezoelectric polarization has influences on the performance of the actuator. The topology design of compliant mechanism can be formulated as an optimization problem of material distribution in a fixed design domain and continuous approximation of material distribution (CAMD) method has demonstrated its effectiveness to prevent the numerical instabilities in topology optimization. The optimization problem is formulated to maximize the mean transduction ratio subject to the total volume constraints and solved using a sequential linear programming algorithm. The effect of CAMD and the performance improvement of actuator are confirmed through Moonie actuator and PZT suspension design.

  • In the present study, nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) is developed for wave propagation of functionally graded (FG) nanoscale plate in the thermal environment by considering the porosity effect. $Si_3N_4$ as ceramic phase and SUS304 as metal phase are regarded to be constitutive material of FG nanoplate. The porosity effect is taken into account on the basis of the newly extended method which considers coupling influence between Young's modulus and mass density. The motion relation is derived by applying Hamilton's principle. NSGT is implemented in order to account for small size effect. Wave frequency and phase velocity are obtained by solving the problem via an analytical method. The effects of different parameters such as porosity coefficient, gradient index, wave number, scale factor and temperature change on phase velocity and wave frequency of FG porous nanoplate have been examined and been presented in a group of illustrations.
