  • It is well known that Premixed Charge Compression Ignition (PCCI) diesel engines according to many technologies such a change in injection timing, multiple injection strategy, cooled EGR, intake charging and SCV have the potential to achieve homogeneous mixture in the cylinder which result in lower NOx and PM as well as performance improvements. This may generate merely the infinite number of experimental conditions. The use of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) technique can considerably pull down the number of experimental set and time demand. This paper presents the effects of both fuel injection and engine operation conditions on the combustion and emissions in the PCCI diesel engine system. The experimental results have revealed that a change in fuel injection timing and multiple injection strategy along with various operating conditions affect the combustion, emissions and BSFC characteristics in the PCCI engine.

저온연소조건에서 급속압축기를 이용한 n-heptane/n-butanol 혼합연료의 착화지연에 관한 연구 (The investigation on the Ignition Delay of n-heptane/n-butanol Blend Fuel Using a Rapid Compression Machine at Low Temperature Combustion Regime)

  • This study presents both experimental and numerical investigation of ignition delay time of n-heptane and n-butanol binary fuel. The $O_2$ concentration in the mixture was set to 9-10% to make high exhaust gas recirculation( EGR) rate condition which leads low NOx and soot emission. Experiments were performed using a rapid compression machine(RCM) at compressed pressure 20bar, several compressed temperature and three equivalence ratios(0.4, 1.0, 1.5). In addition, a numerical study on the ignition delay time was performed using CHEMKIN codes to validate experimental results and predict chemical species in the combustion process. The results showed that the ignition delay time increased with increasing the n-butanol fraction due to a decrease of oxidation of n-heptane at the low temperature. Moreover, all of the binary fuel mixtures showed the combustion characteristics of n-heptane such as cool flame mode at low temperature and negative-temperature-coefficient(NTC) behavior. Due to the effect of high EGR rate condition, the operating region is reduced at lean condition and the ignition delay time sharply increased compared with no EGR condition.

예혼합기의 열적성층화가 PRF연료의 예혼합압축자기착화에 미치는 영향 (Research about Thermal Stratification Effect on HCCI Combustion Fueled with Primary Reference Fuel)

  • The HCCI combustion mode poses its own set of narrow engine operating by knocking. In order to solve this, inhomogeneity method of mixture and temperature is suggested. The purpose of this research is to get fundamental knowledge about the effect of thermal stratification on HCCI combustion of PRF -Air mixture. The temperature stratification is made by buoyancy effect in combustion chamber of RCM. The analysis items are pressure, temperature of in-cylinder gas and combustion duration. In addition, the structure of flames using the two dimensional chemiluminescence's images by a framing camera are analyzed. Under stratification, the LTR starting time and the HTR starting time are advanced than that of homogeneous. Further, the LTR period of homogeneous conditions became shorter than that of the stratified conditions. With the case of homogeneous condition, the luminosity duration becomes shorter than the case of stratified condition. Additionally, under stratified condition, the brightest luminosity intensity is delayed longer than at homogeneous condition.

  • It is becoming increasingly difficult for engines using conventional fuels and combustion techniques to meet stringent emission norms. The homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) concept is being evaluated on account of its potential to control both smoke and NOx emissions. However, HCCI engines face problems of combustion control. In this work, a single cylinder water-cooled diesel engine was operated in the HCCI mode. Diesel was injected during the suction stroke($0^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$ degrees aTDC) using a special injection system in order to prepare a nearly homogeneous charge. The engine was able to develop a BMEP(brake mean effective pressure) in the range of 2.15 to 4.32 bar. Extremely low levels of NOx emissions were observed. Though the engine operation was steady, poor brake thermal efficiency(30% lower) and high HC, CO and smoke were problems. The heat release showed two distinct portions: cool flame followed by the main heat release. The low heat release rates were found to result in poor brake thermal efficiency at light loads. At high brake power outputs, improper combustion phasing was the problem. Fuel deposited on the walls was responsible for increased HC and smoke emissions. On the whole, proper combustion phasing and a need for a well- matched injection system were identified as the important needs.

Diesel Surrogate 상세 반응 기구를 이용한 HCCI 엔진의 연소 특성에 관한 수치해석 연구 (A Numerical Study of Combustion Characteristics for HCCI Engine with Detailed Diesel Surrogate Chemical Mechanism)

  • Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) is the best concept able to provide low NOx and PM in diesel engine emissions. This new alternative combustion process is mainly controlled by chemical kinetics in comparison with the conventional combustion in internal combustion engine. In this paper, combustion characteristics of HCCI engine with suggested diesel surrogate(heptane/toluene mixture fuel) reaction mechanism were numerically investigated by heptane/toluene mixture ratio and EGR ratio. As results, the ignition timing became faster with increasing of heptane, and an initial oxidation and the ignition timing of the mixture fuel were affected by heptane and toluene, respectively.

  • Currently, due to the serious world-wide air pollution by substances emitted from vehicles, emission control is enforced more firmly and it is expected that the regulation requirements for emission will become more severe. A new concept combustion technology that can reduce the NOx and PM in relation to combustion is urgently required. This study used a split injection method at a 4 cylinder common-rail direct injection diesel engine in order to apply the partially premixed charge compression ignition combustion method without significantly altering engine specifications And it is investigated that the effects of the injection ratio and SCV(swirl control valve) to emission characteristics. From these tests, soot(g) and NOx(g) emission could be reduced to 40% and 92% compared to base engine performance at specified engine driving conditions(6 points with weight factors) according to application of split injection and SCV(swirl control valve).

  • 엔진 실린더 내부의 난류유동 특성은 내연기관의 열효율을 결정하는 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 실린더 내 난류유동은 복잡한 3차원 유동으로 유동특성에 대한 자세한 정보는 엔진설계의 최적화를 위해 필수적이다. 균일 예혼합 압축착화(HCCI) 엔진은 가솔린과 디젤엔진 사이의 하이브리드 연소개념이다. 실린더 내 기체의 난류유동은 운동량과 열의 혼합 및 전달률을 증가시키므로 벽면에서의 열전달에 관여하여 HCCI 연소 과정에 중요한 영향을 미치게 된다. 본 연구에서는 연소실 형상에 따른 연소실 내의 기체 난류유동을 LES 모델을 사용한 전산수치해석을 통해 분석하여 HCCI 엔진 연소과정에 미치는 영향을 확인하였고 연구결과는 HCCI 엔진에서 연소실 형상에 따른 연소 특성과 엔진 성능을 개선하기 위한 기본적인 지침에 활용될 수 있다.

HCCI엔진의 과급조건에서 EGR영향에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Investigation of Exhaust Gas Recirculation Effect under Boost Pressure Condition on Homogeneous Charge Compression Autoignition)

  • 본 연구에서는 HCCI엔진의 과급조건에서 EGR의 영향에 대하여 수치해석적인 방법으로 연구하였다. 수치해석은 CHEMKIN-PRO에 있는 single-zone model을 사용하였고 연료로는 N-heptnae, Iso-octane 그리고 PRF50을 사용하였다. 사용된 연료의 화학반응 매커니즘과 열역학적 변수들은 Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL)의 모델을 사용하였다. 연소상의 변화는 열효율에 큰 영향을 미치게 되므로 이영향을 배제하기 위해 본 연구에서는 CA50을 $365^{\circ}CA$($5^{\circ}CA$ aTDC)로 일정하게 고정하였다. 연구결과 EGR의 영향으로 줄어든 산소의 영향에 의해 저온산화반응과 NTC, 고온산화반응이 모두 약화되고 열발생률이 감소하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 과급과 EGR을 함께 사용하게 되면 과급에 의해 증가한 산소량과 연료의 영향으로 인해 연소가 강화되어 저온산화반응, NTC, 고온산화반응이 강화되고 열 발생률이 증가하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. EGR만을 사용하는 경우 IMEP가 감소하는 경향을 나타내지만 과급과 EGR을 함께 사용하는 경우 과급의 영향으로 인해 IMEP가 크게 증가하여 낮은 압력상승률과 높은 출력을 함께 얻을 수 있는 것을 확인하였다.

  • HCCI엔진에는 농도성층화와 열적성층화가 존재하고, 이것들은 착화와 연소과정에 영향을 미치고 있다. 본 연구에서는 예혼합기의 불균질성이 HCCI연소과정에 미치는 영향에 대해서 조사하였다. 우선 4행정광학엔진을 이용하여 잔류가스가 있는 경우와 급속압축장치를 이용하여 잔류가스가 없는 경우의 예혼합기의 불균질성에 대하여 비교분석하였다. DME를 연료로 이용하고 프래밍카메라를 사용하여 2차원화학발광이미지를 취득하였다. 그 결과, 잔류가스가 있는 불균질 한 경우에 4행정엔진실험에서는 연소현상이 공간적으로 연소현상의 시간차이가 발생하였다. 잔류가스가 없는 급속압축장치의 실험에서는 4행정기관의 결과에 비해서 더 적은 공간적인 변화가 존재하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

CAI 연소 방법을 이용한 직분식 가솔린 엔진내의 조기 분사시 연소 및 배기 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Combustion and Emission Characteristics of the Early Injection in a Gasoline Direct Injection Engine Using Controlled Auto Ignition Combustion Method)

  • Controlled auto ignition (CAI) combustion, also known as HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition), offers the potential to simultaneously improve fuel economy and reduce emission. CAI-combustion was achieved in a single cylinder gasoline DI engine, with a cylinder running in a CAI mode. Standard components were used the camshafts which had been modified in order to restrict the gas exchange process. The effects of air-fuel ratio, residual EGR rate and injection timing such as early injection and late injection on the attainable CAI combustion region were investigated. The effect that injection timings on factor such as start of combustion, combustion duration and heat release rate was also investigated. From results early injection caused the mixture to ignite earlier and burn more quickly due to the exothermic reaction during the recompression and gave rise to good mixing of the fuel-air.
