  • Considering the current rise in elderly population, institutions and facilities caring for the elderly are currently unable to satify the growing needs of the aged wanting the better qualities of life. Therefore, this study will analyze institutions and policies for the elderly in Japan, which has already experienced the rise in elderly population about 30 years earlier than Korea. Because the living conditions of Japan is somewhat similar to that of Korea, analyzing its solutions, both governmental and private, will help better understand the current situations of Korea and possibly offer guidelines as to better serve the growing demands of the aged. In Japan, the social welfare policies directed at caring for the elderly are mainly directed by the government: however, the private services tend to be more adroit at meeting the ever-changing demands of the elderly. Incidentally, the privately owned elderly homes of Japan are a major part of so called the "Silver Industries". The elderly home that are run by private corporations consititute 50 percent of all private institutions for the elderly. These homes tend tobe situated in a city, or near a city environment, serving 25 to 99 people. The types of such homes can be classified from A to D,E,F, reflecting the various services offered by such homes meeting the various demands by the elderly populatiov. Analyzing the social tred of Japan for theelderly, it can be said that the responsibility of the elderly should not only be relied upon the government, but to the society as whole, both public and private. The ever-changing demands of the elderly, wanting better qualities of life, can be better served by systematic analysis of the demands and the various solutions to such demands. Also, the necessary governmental policies in support of elderly welfare, will be needed.be needed.

The education program was developed based on Kolb's experiential learning model and composed of 5 units, which included content on types of human rights and rights to death with dignity, elder abuse, physical liberty, and self-determination. The program was positively evaluated showing a score of 3.35 (SD=0.37) out of 4. • This study has been performed to analyze impacts of urban vs rural residence on later life. In this study, 329 Koreans aged 60 or more were interviewed for their current sociodemographic status and daily life styles. The results are drawn as follows: 1. There is no regional impact on birth order; rate of those born as the first child was not significantly different over regions. 2. For the household composition, the rate of three generations was significantly higher in rural areas than in urban areas. 3. More than 85% of the subjects lived in owned homes in rural areas, while 77% did in urban areas. 4. More than 89% of the subjects lived in single-structured homes in rural areas, while only 45% did in urban areas. The results indicate that in planning public housing for the aged, more social spaces accommodating grandchildren and ownership units need to be allocated for rural facilities. In addition, it is recommended that daily activity schedules need to be differentiated so that rural residents have meals and houseworks earlier than urban residents.

Furthermore the questionnaire survey of home helpers (18 persons - 50% answers) clarified that more than half of them have lumbago pains and the biggest load in the everyday healthcare c comes from moving the patients or getting them into or out of t the equipment for moving. Finally we considered concrete proposals appropriate for each h healthcare scene image, based on evaluation toward efficiency (design guidelines) for suitable healthcare equipment for aged people at their homes: 1) Design toward a proper posture 2) Design toward self-help possibility 3) Design toward patient active participation 4) Design toward rationality of the whole process 5) Design toward place-appropriate healthcare equipment 6) Design toward healing of mind 7) Good level of healthcare skills 8) Economic, systematic rationality

The main findings were summarized as follows: 1. The respondents who are less aged, highly educated comparatively, and living with spouse show positive response for the use of nursing homes. The aged living independently and the aged living with unmarried children show higher demand for this facility. Also, the respondents who prefer independent living away from their childrenn, urban areas as their residence and flat-type housing show more interest for the facility. The respondents who are self- supportive, who has no financial supporter, no caretaker, and no domestic helper demonstrate strong inclination to the use of the facility. The respondents who are interested in this kind of facility, acknowledge the necessity of it show strong intention of moving into it. 2. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to understand factors related to the intention of moving into the nursing homes. The group who wish to live separated from their children in the future give 1.78 times more favorable response than the opposite. The group who have an interest in the facility for elderly has 2.02 times higher intention of moving than the opposite. The group who have an intention of using the facility for elderly it is 7.34 times more likely to move into it. 3. The respondents who are the potential consumers for nursing homes can be subdivided. Within the positive group, it could be divided into the group of living independently with the preference of flat-type housing, the group living independently with the preference of separate housing, and the group wishing to live with their children. Within the negative group, the factor of the division is their concern to the facility. Following this study, it can be said that old age people, who have been regarded as one homogeneous group so far, should be recognized as one characteristic individual.
