  • This study intends to suggest the considerations in the planning of production space of rice farming houses, based on their needs on the space and machinery for rice production. The 30 rice farming houses, in a village in Chungbuk province, responded for this study. Larger stalls and new built storehouses for grain or machinery showed changes in attached buildings after 1970s. Despite of the broad use of machinery in rice terming, however, only 1 or 2 houses in a village own and run it, and the planning of storehouse for machinery has to be done respectively. The sort and location of attached houses depend on the scale of rice farming. And because the production activities in the riceplanting or harvesting period collide with household ones, the considerations on the planning of efficient activity-oriented production space are offered in this study.

  • This paper presents the results of a theoretical energy analysis of a research test bed called the Zero Net Energy Test House (ZNETH) in Omaha, Nebraska in U.S.A. The ZNETH project is being designed and built with the goal of consuming a negligible amount of energy by offsetting remaining usage after energy conservation. The theoretically consumed and generated energy levels were analyzed using energy modeling software programs. By integrating a highly graphical and intuitive analysis with a Building Information Model(BIM) of the house, this investigation introduces strategies to include sustainable materials and systems to predict energy generation with a case study of ZNETH. In addition, this paper introduces parametric analyses for better envelope design and construction material selection by analyzing simulated energy consumption with various parametric inputs, e.g., material types, location, and size. It was found that the current design of ZNETH does not meet its goal of zero net energy. Sugeestions are presented to assist ZHETH in meeting its net zero energy goal.

  • It is essential to investigate the structure and the main characteristics of BSN (Bio-Sensor Network) platform in built smart healthcare environment while designing healthy housing facilities. For this study, WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) data transmission technologies have been employed with medical sensors, and optimal medical devices would provide various Web 2.0 services by connecting to the WiBro network. The BSN platform normally recognizes in surroundings of WBAN (Wireless Body Area Network) or WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network), and it is possible to manage sensor nodes by utilizing SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) and REST (REpresentational State Transfer). In addition, the feature of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) for mobile gateway is also included for being adapted to huge network structure. Finally, BSN platform will play a role as important clues for developing personal WSN service models for smart healthy housing properties.

  • This study investigated various alternatives for childcare among dual-earner families and discussed implications for public policy development. Eight employed married women and two of their husbands were interviewed about work-family balance. All the interviewees complained that taking cue of the children in dual-earner families is a challenge. They resort to all available alternatives because public childcare support is insufficient and inadequate. There were five different types chilcare: extended family network, public and private institutions, paid help (nannies), rearranging work schedules, and training their children to take cue of themselves. However, all these alternatives entail various problems. More and better childcare facilities and programs should be built and after-school programs should be designed. On the other hand, parents should also make more effort to prioritize children's needs in finding a balance between work and family.

  • In this paper we present the guideline to evaluate the easiness of using personal robots and their learning abilities based on the analysis of their built-in commands, user interfaces, and intelligences. Recently, we are breathing with robots that can be able to do lots of roles. cleaning, security, pets and education in real life. They can be classified as home robots, guide robots, service robots, robot pets, and so on. There are, however, no standards to evaluate their ability, so it is not easy to select an appropriate robot when a user wants to buy it. Thus, we present, as a guideline that can be a standard for the evaluation of the personal robots, the standards by means of analyzing existing personal robots and results of the recent research works. We will, also, describe how to apply the evaluation method th the personal robot.

  • In this paper a new framework is presented for developing the personal robot being used in home environments. We mainly focus on the system engineering technology such as the modularization and standardization. Effective ways for interfacing among modules are addressed regarding compatibility in hardware and software, and as a result a personal robot platform named DHR I is built. The robot is composed of five modules such as brain, mobile, sensor, vision, and user interface modules. Each module can be easily plugged in the system in a mechanical as well as electrical sense by sharing the communication protocol with IEEE1394 FireWire. &n...

  • Since the beginning of the human world, man has tried to prove his presence on the earth. Wherever he moved, he left his marks in different forms. Whether he lived in caves, in open spaces or in-built structures, he left evidence in art form, the earliest of which are the cave paintings found in various regions of the world. These transformed into open spaces where man carved and painted images and writings on rock faces and boulders. Although Pakistan provided an early home to such art forms, they have been discovered in Kashmir for the first time and will be revealed in this paper. In the present survey, a great number of rock art sites were found and documented in detail. These rock art sites display the earliest communities who settled down or traveled through the region, highlighting their thoughts, beliefs and practices. The tentative chronology of these rock art sites ranges from Neolithic to Hindu periods, creating an interesting mosaic in the historic profile of Kashmir.

  • For the reduction and efficient management of railway noise, first of all prediction of railway noise is necessarily requisted. At home and abroad many studies for prediction of railway nearby noise have been accomplished. But it is impossible to predict exactly for the Korean Railway, because the acoustic powers for each rolling stock used in Korea have not been built yet. So in this study, acoustic powers for each Korean rolling stock such as Samaeul, Mugungwha were builded acceding to the speed and rail support systems. Predicted results using the acoustic powers suggested in this study are compared with measured results and it is known that these acoustic powers can be used for precise prediction of railway noise.

In this prediction model, the number of car, distance from the rail can be considered. Finally for the validation of prediction nlodel equation, the predicted Leq was compared to the measured Leq.

  • Recently, scientists introduced a new type of microscope capable of investigating nonconducting surfaces in an atomic scale, which is called AFM (Atomic Force Microscope). It was an innovative attempt to overcome the limitation of STM (Scanning Tunnelling Microscope) which has been able to obtain the image of conducting surfaces. Surfaces of samples are imaged with atomic resolution. The AFM is an imaging tool or a profiler with unprecedented 3-D resolution for various surface types. The AFM technology, however, leaves a lot of room for improvement due to its delicate and fragile probing mechanism. One of the room for improvements is gap control between probe tip and sample surface. Distance between probe tip and sample surface must be kept in below one Angtrom in order to measure the sample surface in Angstrom resolution. In this paper, AFM system modeling, experimental system identification and control scheme based on system identification are performed and finally sample surface is measured by home-built AFM with such a control scheme.
