Efforts are actively underway to address the issues related to the high cost of Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions by designing high-performance Pt-based alloys through the control of their nanostructures. In this study, a method was proposed to control the nanostructure of Pt-based alloys, either hollow or core-shell, by adjusting the pH of the solution during the galvanic replacement reaction between the carbon-supported nickel-nickel nitride composite and the Pt ions. The physical characteristics, including the state, quantity, and morphology of the metal particles under different preparation conditions, were evaluated through X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma. When the prepared catalysts were employed for the oxygen reduction reaction, they exhibited an improvement in area specific-activity compared to a commercial Pt/C, with a 1.7 and 1.9-fold enhancement for the hollow and core-shell structured catalysts, respectively.
Micro hollow plate type silica with low refraction properties was synthesized and its hollow structure was applied as an optical structure to develop a light diffusion material that simultaneously satisfies the requirements of good light diffusibility, high transmissibility, and high luminance. The developed light diffusion material was applied to a light diffusion film and the film's optical properties were assessed. Hollow silica was synthesized by precipitation method using $Mg(OH)_2$ core particles, sodium silicate, and ammonium sulfate as the silica precursors. The concentration of the silica precursor was adjusted to control hollow silica shell thickness. The total light transmittance of the light diffusion film composed of the hollow silica was 94.55%, which was 4.57% higher than that of the PC film; new film's haze was 71.20%, which was 70.9% higher. Furthermore, the luminance increased by 5.34% compared to that of the light source. The reason for the results is not only that the micro plate type hollow silica, which has a low refractive property, played a role in reducing the difference in refractive index between the medium boundaries, but also that there was a light-concentrating effect due to the changing of light paths to the front direction inside the hollow structure. Optical simulation verified the enhanced optical properties when hollow silica was applied to the light diffusion film.
Hollow silica particles were prepared using sodium silicate and organic templates. Polystyrene latex (PSL) particles produced by dispersion polymerization were used as organic templates. PSL particles ranged from $1{\mu}m$ to $3{\mu}m$ in diameter were synthesized by adjusting the amount of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The PSL/$SiO_2$ core-shell particles were prepared by coating of silica nanoparticles originated from sodium silicate using sol-gel method. The organic templates were removed by the organic solvent, tetrahydrofuran (THF). Morphology of hollow silica particles was investigated with respect to types of the reaction medium and pH during the process. By changing the solvent from ethanol to water, hollow silica particles were successfully formed. Hollow silica particles with the uniform shell thickness were produced at low pH as well. The reflectivity of the as-prepared silica particles was measured in the range of the wavelength of UV and visible light. Hollow silica particles showed much better reflective properties than the commercial light reflector, Insuladd.
Carbon spheres (CS) were fabricated using glucose as a precursor in the hydrothermal method. Hollow TiO2 (H-TiO2) spheres with 200 nm, 500 nm, and 1,200 nm were synthesized by CS/TiO2 core-shell particles via a sol-gel and calcination method. H-TiO2 spheres with nano and micron sizes were characterized using FE-SEM, HR-TEM, and X-ray diffraction. The CIE color coordinate, solar reflectance, and heat shield temperatures of H-TiO2/polyacrylate (PA) composite film were investigated using a UV-Vis-NIR spectrometer and homemade heat insulation temperature measuring device. H-TiO2/PA composites exhibit excellent thermal insulation since the hollow structure filled with dry air has low thermal conductivity and near infrared light reflecting performance. The thermal insulation increased with increasing the hollow sphere (HS) size on H-TiO2/PA composites. The PA composite film mixed with H-TiO2 filled with 1200 nm HS reduced the heat shield temperature by 26 ℃ compared to that of the transparent glass counterpart.

Recently, precast concrete products have been increasingly used in the construction of bridges except for special bridges like long-span bridge due to their easy and high-quality construction. Specially the use of precast prestressed concrete hollow box slab bridges is also increased due to the merits in their construction. Thus, an experimental evaluation of flexural behavior of the precast PSC hollow box slab bridges and a development of effective analytical technique for the behavior are necessary. For the development, experimental study on the flexural behavior of the precast bridges up to ultimate states is needed. In this study, two full-scale precast PSC hollow box slab girders are manufactured and full-scale flexural failure tests of the girders subjected to cyclic loading are carried out. For the failure analysis of the girders, the so-called volume control method is applied to finite element analysis of the precast PSC hollow box slab girders discretized using multi-layered shell elements. The analytical results by the volume control method is verified by comparing with test results.

Nanoengineered materials with advanced architectures are critical building blocks to modulate conventional material properties or amplify interface behavior for enhanced device performance. While several techniques exist for creating one dimensional heterostructures, electrospinning has emerged as a versatile, scalable, and cost-effective method to synthesize ultra-long nanofibers with controlled diameter (a few nanometres to several micrometres) and composition. In addition, different morphologies (e.g., nano-webs, beaded or smooth cylindrical fibers, and nanoribbons) and structures (e.g., core-.shell, hollow, branched, helical and porous structures) can be readily obtained by controlling different processing parameters. Although various nanofibers including polymers, carbon, ceramics and metals have been synthesized using direct electrospinning or through post-spinning processes, limited works were reported on the compound semiconducting nanofibers because of incompatibility of precursors. In this work, we combined electrospinning and galvanic displacement reaction to demonstrate cost-effective high throughput fabrication of ultra-long hollow semiconducting chalcogen and chalcogenide nanofibers. This procedure exploits electrospinning to fabricate ultra-long sacrificial nanofibers with controlled dimensions, morphology, and crystal structures, providing a large material database to tune electrode potentials, thereby imparting control over the composition and shape of the nanostructures that evolved during galvanic displacement reaction.

Nanofibers, one of various one-dimensional nanomaterials such as nanorods, nanowires and nanotubes have been successfully synthesized by many groups in recent years and their applications to chemical sensors, catalytic filters and biomedicine, etc. are extensively tested. In particular, there is a possibility that chemical sensors based on oxide nanofibers can overcome the shortcomings of chemical sensors based on single nanowires. In order to prepare oxide nanofibers, the electrospinning method is most widely used. In this work, we synthesized various oxide nanofibers including ZnO, SnO2 and CuO by employing an electrospinning method and various shapes of nanofibers including core-shell nanofibers and hollow nanofibers as well. The response properties of the various nanofibers to oxidizing and reducing gaseous species have been investigated systematically. The normal oxide nanofibers showed high sensitivity and quite fast response time to many gaseous species. Furthermore, derivatives of normal nanofibers including hollow nanofibers, core-shell nanofibers and heterostructured nanofibers display much superior sensing properties. These results hold promise for the practical application of oxide nanofibers to chemical sensors. In addition, the sensing mechanisms operated in the nanofibers will be discussed in detail.
Modeling and simulation of air humidification by hollow fiber membrane contactors are investigated in the current study. A computational fluid dynamic model was developed by solving the k-epsilon turbulence 2D Navier-Stokes equations as well as mass conservation equations for steady-state conditions in membrane contactors. Finite element method is used for the study of the air humidification under different operating conditions, with a focus on the humidity density, total mass transfer flux and velocity field. There has been good agreement between simulation results and experimental data obtained from literature. It is found that the enhancement of air stream decreases the outlet humidity from 0.392 to 0.340 (module 1) and from 0.467 to 0.337 (module 2). The results also indicated that there has been an increase in air velocity in the narrow space of shell side compared with air velocity wide space of shell side. Also, irregular arrangement has lower dead zones than regular arrangement which leads to higher water flux.
Enterococcus faecalis RKY1 cells were immobilized in an asymmetric hollow fiber bioreactor for application to the continuous production of succinic acid. The media was fed into shell-side of the module using a peristaltic pump, and the products were collected through lumen-side outlet. The number of hollow fibers within the module did not affect the bioreactor efficiency in the transverse operated hollow fiber bioreactor. The steady state at the outlet of hollow fiber bioreactor was reached after 24 hr cultivation at flow rate of 0.25 mL/mim, 12 hr at 0.5 L/min, and 9 hr at 1.0 mL/mm, respectively. The succinate and fumarate concentrations within the hollow fiber bioreactor, however, were as changeful as increasing the flow rate. During continuous operation with the flow rates between 0.5 and 2.0 mL, the productivity of succinate was 8.0-10.9 g/L $.$ hr at 30 g/L fumarate, 4.9-14.9 g/L hr at 50 g/L fumarate, and 7.2-17.1 g/L hr at 80 galL fumarate, respectively.
