  • Previous works about the cylindrical shape elastic body which is under longitudinal temperature distribution mostly show the results of free expansion, therefore exact thermo-elastic analysis is needed. The object of this work is to analyze the thermo-elastic problem of the hollow cylinder when the cylinder is under longitudinal temperature distribution. In this paper, the analytical solution is found by using Galerkin vector, and it is compared by the results of FEM. For displacements of cylinder, analytical values are almost same as the results of FEM, but free expansion is not fit for analytical solution and the results of FEM. stresses from analytical solution and the results of FEM show good agreement also. but the results are different near the end boundary, since St. Venant principle is applied.

  • This paper presents the results of an extensive numerical analysis program devoted to the investigation of the mechanical behaviour of bolted ball-cylinder joints. The analysis program is developed by means of finite element (FE) models implemented in the non-linear code ABAQUS. The FE models have been accurately calibrated on the basis of available experimental results. It is indicated that the FE models could be used effectively to describe the mechanical performance of bolted ball-cylinder joints, including failure modes, stress distributions and load-displacement curves. Therefore, the proposed FE models could be regarded as an efficient and accurate tool to investigate the mechanical behavior of bolted ball-cylinder joints. In addition, to develop a further investigation, parametric studies were performed, varying the dimensions of hollow cylinders, rectangular tubes, convex washers and ribbed stiffener. It is found that the dimensions of hollow cylinders, rectangular tubes and ribbed stiffener influenced the mechanical behaviour of bolted ball-cylinder joints significantly. On the contrary, the effects of the dimensions of convex washers were negligible.

  • In case of hollow cylinder extrusion using porthole die, the effects of extrusion parameters-temperature, the speed of extrusion, the shape of the die and mandrel-on metal flow in porthole die extrusion of aluminum have been investigated. However, there have been few studies about condenser tube extruded by porthole die. Original metal flow of condenser tube by porthole die extrusion is similar to hollow cylinder extrusion but the estimation of metal flow for extrusion parameters is different. For example, variation of chamber length in hollow extrusion only affects the welding pressure, however, the welding chamber length in condenser tube extrusion influences to the welding pressure as well as the deflection of mandrel. This study was designed to evaluate metal flow, welding pressure, extrusion load, tendency of mandrel deflection according to angular variation in the bottom of chamber in porthole die. Estimation was carried out using finite element method in as non-steady state. Analytical results can provide useful information the optimal design of porthole die.

  • Based on the theory of piezo-elasticity, the paper obtains the exact solutions of functionally graded piezoelectric hollow cylinders with different piezoelectric parameter $g_{31}$. Two kinds of piezoelectric hollow cylinders are considered herein. One is a multi-layered cylinder with different parameter $g_{31}$ in different layers; the other is a continuously graded cylinder with arbitrarily variable $g_{31}$. By using the Airy stress function method with plane strain assumptions, the exact solutions of the mechanic and electrical components of both cylinders are obtained when they are subjected to external voltage (actuator) and pressure (sensor), simultaneously. Furthermore, good agreement is achieved between the theoretical and numerical results, and useful conclusions are given.

  • The effects of the STS 304 hollow cylinder property variations on the non-steady heat conduction are considered in this paper. In the non steady state, the specific heat and conductivity are depended on the temperature variations, and these properties affect to the governing equation on heat conduction. But the most of numerical analysis on heat conduction is assumed to constant properties which is conductivity and specific heat. Assuming that the properties are reacted sensitively, the numerical results can have the difference of between constant properties with non constant properties. The main parameters are specific heat and conductivity. The temperature distributions of the STS 304 hollow cylinder became in steady state after 4 minutes in case of the constant properties. As the conductivity is varied with temperature, the temperature distributions became in steady state after 15 minutes. Therefore, a numerical analysis of the non steady state heat transfer is so important in case of varying temperature.

  • In this paper, sound pressure sensitivity of the fiber optic acoustic sensor according to sensor direction and mandrel material were investigated experimentally. Three different directions were selected as stand, lay, and hole. Hollow cylinder type mandrel dimension is 30 mm in outer diameter, 45 mm in length, and 2 mm in thickness, and about 50 m optical fibers were wounded on the surface of the mandrel. Non-directional sound speaker was used as a sound source. Sagnac interferometer and single mode fiber, a laser with 1,550 nm in wavelength, $2{\times}2$ coupler were used. Based on the experimental results, lay direction's sensitivity is the highest in the frequency range of 2 kHz~4 kHz. 'PTFE+carbon' material is more sensitive than PTFE in the frequency range of 5 kHz~20 kHz. Sound pressure detection sensitivity depends on the mandrel direction and material under certain frequency.

  • The paper deals with the study of the dynamics of the oscillating moving ring load acting in the interior of the hollow circular cylinder surrounded by an elastic medium. The axisymmetric loading case is considered and the study is made by employing the exact equations and relations of linear elastodynamics. The focus is on the influence of the oscillation of the moving load and the problem parameters such as the cylinder's thickness/radius ratio on the critical velocities. At the same time, the dependence between the interface stresses and load moving velocity under various frequencies of this load, as well as the frequency response of the mentioned stresses under various load velocity are investigated. In particular, it is established that oscillation of the moving load can cause the values of the critical velocity to decrease significantly and at the same time the oscillation of the moving load can lead to parametric resonance. It is also established that the critical velocity decreases with decreasing of the cylinder's thickness/radiusratio.

  • The bi-material elastic system consisting of the pre-stressed hollow cylinder and pre-stresses surrounding infinite elastic medium is considered and it is assumed that the mentioned initial stresses in this system are caused with the compressing or stretching uniformly distributed normal forces acting at infinity in the direction which is parallel to the cylinder's axis. Moreover, it is assumed that on the internal surface of the cylinder the ring load which moves with constant velocity acts and within these frameworks it is required to determine the influence of the aforementioned initial stresses on the critical velocity of the moving load. The corresponding investigations are carried out within the framework of the so-called three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stresses bodies and the axisymmetric stress-strain state case is considered. The "moving coordinate system" method is used and the Fourier transform is employed for solution to the formulated mathematical problem and Fourier transformation of the sought values are determined analytically. However, the originals of those are determined numerically with the use of the Sommerfeld contour method. The critical velocity is determined from the criterion, according to which, the magnitudes of the absolute values of the stresses and displacements caused with the moving load approaches an infinity. Numerical results on the influence of the initial stresses on the critical velocity and interface normal and shear stresses are presented and discussed. In particular, it is established that the initial stretching (compressing) of the constituents of the system under consideration causes a decrease (an increase) in the values of the critical velocity.

  • The paper studies the attenuation of the axisymmetric longitudinal waves propagating in the bi-layered hollow cylinder made of linear viscoelastic materials. Investigations are made by utilizing the exact equations of motion of the theory of viscoelasticity. The dispersion equation is obtained for an arbitrary type of hereditary operator of the materials of the constituents and a solution algorithm is developed for obtaining numerical results on the attenuation of the waves under consideration. Specific numerical results are presented and discussed for the case where the viscoelasticity of the materials is described through fractional-exponential operators by Rabotnov. In particular, how the rheological parameters influence the attenuation of the axisymmetric longitudinal waves propagating in the cylinder under consideration, is established.

  • Transient solution of asymmetric mechanical and thermal stresses for hollow cylinders made of functionally graded material is presented. Temperature distribution, as function of radial and circumferential directions and time, is analytically obtained, using the method of separation of variables and generalized Bessel function. A direct method is used to solve the Navier equations, using the Euler equation and complex Fourier series.
