  • A new approach which combines implicit surface scheme and recursive subdivision method is suggested in order to fill the holes with complex shapes in the polygon model. In the method, a base surface is constructed by creating smooth implicit surface from the points selected in the neighborhood of holes. In order to assure C$^1$ continuity between the newly generated surface and the original polygon model, offset points of same number as the selected points are used as the augmented constraint conditions in the calculation of implicit surface. In this paper the well-known recursive subdivision method is used in order to generate the triangular net with good quality using the hole boundary curve and generated base implicit surface. An efficient anisotropic smoothing algorithm is introduced to eliminate the unwanted noise data and improve the quality of polygon model. The effectiveness and validity of the proposed method are demonstrated by performing numerical experiments for the various types of holes and polygon model.

  • (1) The correlation between the mass of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the properties of their host galaxies suggests that SMBHs and host galaxies are closely linked in their formation and evolution. While the exact origin of their relationship is still under debate, theoretical models often invoke feedback from active galactic nuclei as a crucial mechanism for establishing the BH-host correlation. In the first part of my talk, I will present possible observational biases in the BH-host relation, and methods to overcome these biases. I will also report our efforts to find observational sign of the AGN feedback in high-z young luminous AGNs. (2) While intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) is thought be cosmologically important class to understand the link between stellar mass black holes and SMBHs, it is extremely rare in the present-day Universe. In the second part of this talk, I will report a Gemini/GMOS-N IFU study of an ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 5252, which is a possible candidate of an off-nuclear non-stellar black hole.

  • Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the high efficieney and long lifetime are of growing interest in next-generation displays. Among the factors influencing OLEDs properties, one of unstable factor is $Alq_3$ cationic species caused by the excess holes resided in $Alq_3$ layer. Therefore, we suppressed the accumulation of excess holes by using the mixed-hole transporting layer (MHTL) of NPB and CBP in multilayer green OLEDs. The devices with MHTL showed improved characteristics in the luminous efficiency and lifetime. More characteristics and the carrier transport mechanism will be discussed.

  • This paper investigates the problem of a crack approaching two circular holes in an orthotropic infinite plate. The stress intensity factors were obtained by using the modified mapping-collocation method. The present results show excellent agreement with existing solutions for a crack approaching two circular holes in an isotropic infinite plate. In the numerical examples, various types of cross-ply laminated composites were considered. To investigate the effect of orthotropy and geometry(d/R and a/(d-R)) on crack tip singularity, stress intensity factors were considered as functions of the normalized crack length. It is expected that the modified mapping-collocation method can be applied to the analysis of various kinds of cracks existing around the stress-concentration region of composite laminate.

  • The local heat/mass transfer coefficients for arrays of impinging circular air jets on a plane surface are determined by means of the naphthalene sublimation method. Spent fluid makes a crossflow in the confined space. The crossflow reduces heat/mass transfer at the small gap distance between the jet plate and impingement surface because of reentrainment of the spent fluid. The present study suggests a new exhaust system having effusion holes in the impinging jet plate. The spent air flow out after impingement just through effusion holes located in the upper plate. This system increases heat/mass transfer coefficients and uniformity for small gap distances$(H/d{\leq}2)$

  • A study on discharge characteristics of a rotating discharge hole is very important to enhance the performance of an induction motor which have external forced cooling system. The discharge characteristics of rotating discharge holes are influenced by rotating speed, length-to-diameter ratio, inlet shape of rotor holes, etc. An experimental study on the effect of chamfered inlet edge of rotor inlet part with various depth-to-diameter and inlet chamfered edge angle is conducted. Depth-to-diameter ratios range from 0 to 0.5 and inlet chamfered edge angle range from 0 to 60. As a result, there is an optimal design point of inlet chamfered edge depth. And the inlet edge angle far maximum discharge coefficient is influenced mainly by the rotating speed of discharge holes.

  • A 40 mm medium caliber gun to be equipped with ventilation holes is designed and manufactured in this study. The muffler used is composed of holes, blades, and several spaces in the tube. Accordingly, a numerical analysis is performed with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) before testing the muffler. The validity of the numerical analysis is examined by analyzing the differences between the measured data of the firing test and the results of the CFD analysis. The CFD analysis showed that the numerical analysis can be used positively in the muffler design because no difference exists between the results of the field test and the CFD analysis. The test result also indicated a noise reduction of approximately 10 dB. Moreover, the muzzle velocity is almost equivalent, regardless of the muffler.

  • Pleasantness or quietness becomes one of the most important factors for residential and office building designs recently. Especially for apartments, the noise generated by falling objects becomes a sensitive issue these days. To overcome the problem of the impact noise in apartments, the floor design has been changed. To reduce the transmissibility of the noise. composite floor structures ate devised and implemented for the construction of apartments. In this paper. the noise reduction) performance of a composite floor plate with holes is analyzed. Computational models for the structures are developed and its Performance is evaluated by using the finite element method. The results show that the noise can be significantly reduced with the multi-layer composite floor plates with holes.

  • Although many efforts have been made in making nanometer-sized holes, there is still a major challenge in fabricating individual single-digit nanometer holes in a more controllable way for different materials, size distribution and hole shapes. In this paper we describe our efforts to use a top down approach in nanofabrication method to make single-digit nanoholes. There are three major steps towards the fabrication of a single-digit nanohole. 1) Preparing the freestanding thin film by epitaxial deposition and electrochemical etching. 2) Making sub-micro holes ($0.2{\mu}\;to\;0.02{\mu}$) by focused ion beam (FIB), electron beam (EB), atomic force microscope (AFM), and others methods. 3) Reducing the hole size to less than 10 nm by epitaxial deposition, FIB or EB induced deposition and micro coating. Preliminary work has been done on thin films (30 nm in thickness) preparation, sub-micron hole fabrication, and E-beam induced deposition. The results are very promising.

  • Sometimes open holes are required for the function and the weight reduction of structure and machinery. However, the serious stress concentration occurs because of the geometric discontinuity caused by the holes and cutting section. In this study, it is attempted to obtain the stress concentration coefficients of the inner surface of the hole boundary by changing the position and the shape of holes on the homogeneous isotropic plate. And the effects on the plate are investigated. The results show that the stress level becomes low and the distribution area widens the position of stress concentration changes as the ratio ah increases and change to a circle. And as the ratio a/l decreases, the stress concentration reduces.
