  • Drilling is one of the most important operations performed in the machining industry. And the material of the workpiece has a profound effect on the tool life, the surface finish produced and the overall economy of the process. Hot-rolled high strength steels have been used for automobile structural material, owing to high hardness and machinability of the material. However, in the drilling of hot-rolled high strength steels, the current knowledge of tool wear and machinability are insuf-ficient. There, it is desirable to monitor drill wear status and hole quality changes during the hole drilling process. Accordingly, this paper deals with the cutting characteristics of the hot-rolled high strength steels using common HSS drill. The performance variables include the drilling thrust, torque and drill wear data obtained from drilling experiments con-ducted on the workpiece. Also drill were is measured by acoustic emission system and computer vision system.

  • An experimental study on drilling of stainless steel is conducted using TiAlN coated drills and HSS twist drills with several cutting conditions; feed rate, spindle rotational speed, and dry/wet cutting. The effects of number of hole on the thrust force are examined by cutting force measurement. The flank wear of the drills and the change of hole diameter are quantitatively observed using a vision system. It is found that the thrust force in drilling with TiAlN coated drills decrease under dry and wet machining, whereas the flank wear resistance is improved.

  • Grinding technology in morden industry society is focusing on research & development for grinding stone and machining parts for the purpose of high accuracy and high efficiency of products. But, in order to equip the high technology and high accuracy of micro stone which is one of grinding stone, hardly and continuous effort on R&D is required. In this study, honing processing work of 2-cycle engine cylinder for motorcycle which has open hole is practiced so as to clear how borning that is prior step of honing and hone stone make an influence on accuracy of honing. As the result of analyzing the results of experiments, we came to conclusion that we can secure good conditions of honing by controlling and keeping appropriate cycle-time in the stage of boring of prior step of honing.

  • In this paper, precision processing is carried out for the pre hardened steel(HRC 54), which is one of injection mould materials. Processing characteristics are estimated according to the number of tool cutting blade and roundness is observed by the 3-Dimensional measuring machine. The surface roughness affected by the wire electric discharge machining are measured. Cutting component force of STAVOX is the highest in condition of 2F processing because load per a blade of cutting tool is high. Especially, the difference in Fz is over 20N by cutting load. The slower spindle rotation speed and tool feed rate are, the better cutting component force is. The roundness of hole processed in condition of 4F is good because feed rate is able to be fast. When rotation speed is increased, the surface roughness is decreased. The surface roughness acquired in condition of 2F processing is higher about 50% than 4F processing.

  • Chip control is a major problem in automatic machining process, especially in finish turning operation. In this case, chip breaker is one of the important factors to be determined. As unbroken chips are grown. these deteriorate the surface roughness. and proces automation can not be carried out. In this study to get rid of chip curling problem while turning internal hole. optimal chip breaker is selected from the experiment. The experiment is planned with Taguchi's method that is based on the orthogonal arrary of design factors. From the response table. cutting speed, feedrate, depth of cut and tool geometry turn to be major factors affecting chip formation. Then, optimal chip breaker is selected. and this is verified as good enough for chip control from the experiment.

  • In the application of the BIPV system, it is expected that the workability is lowered due to the difficulty in securing the space for wiring in the frame and the performance of the frame due to the wiring hole processing is lowered. Therefore, In this study, we propose a method to improve the wiring of the inner space of the BIPV frame, and through the simulation evaluation process, the thermal and condensation performance are secured by complementing the problems caused by the hole machining, and the time and effort required for BIPV construction are reduced. For this purpose, a wiring treatment method using a flange insertion tube was proposed, and the thermal and condensation performance was evaluated through simulation analysis.

  • Micro Drills have found ever wider application. However micro drilling is a machining to integrate the difficult machinablities such as tool stiffness, position control and revolution accuracy, and is known to cost and time consuming. So, this study aimed to practice ultraminiature drilling(0.05 .phi. ) wiht simple component, if possible. System is developed as the three modules : feed drives, spindle and monitoring part. The dynamics of measured current signals from the spindle of Micro Hole Drilling machine are investigated to establish the criteria of stepfeed mechanism. Cutting experiments identify the relationship of spindle rpm, feed rate and tool life. The smaller drill diameter is, the more suitable cutting condition have to be selected because of chip packing.

  • Recently, the use of advanced materials with light weight significantly increases because of global regulation on CO2 emission. Especially, CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) one of the most promising advanced materials. Since CFRP has pretty higher strength per unit weight than steel, it is one of most popular materials in aviation industry and its application to automobile rises sharply. Especially, one of the frequent machining processes for CFRP is drilling to make a hole, however, CFRP drilling has troublesome limitations in hole quality and productivity induced due to delamination, splintering and severe tool wear. Particularly, cutting loads increase caused by tool wear makes delamination and splintering even severer. Therefore, tool wear monitoring or reduction in CFRP drilling must be considered seriously. In this study, we measured thrust force, flank wear, and tool surface temperature in drilling using various tools with different sizes and materials. Consequently, it was presented the effects of tool properties on drilled hole quality, thrust force and tool surface temperature.

  • This paper presents the process of manufacturing technology of ceramics ferrule for optical fiber connector. Precision zirconia ceramic ferrules is widely used for high performance and low cost single mode optical fiber connectors. To polish the hole of the zirconia ceramic ferrule, the wire lapping instrument is developed and the machining experiment is conducted. Through the centerless grinding using diamond wheel the surface roughness of zirconia ceramics ferrule is below the 1 .mu. m Rmax.
