  • McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is a disease with clinical features such as fibrous dysplasia in which normal bone tissue is replaced with abnormal fibrous tissue, abnormalities in the endocrine system, and cafe-au-lait spots on the skin. Although MAS patients are generally known to have reduced bone healing ability, postoperative healing after invasive surgical extraction is still not clearly known due to its relatively rare occurrence. In this report, a 25-year-old female patient, who had been diagnosed with MAS and had a history of abnormal bone healing after fractures of her extremities, underwent surgical extraction of the mandibular third molar with surrounding bone removal. Postoperatively, the patient showed favorable soft tissue and bone healing at the surgical site without abnormal findings such as newly developed fibro-osseous lesions, postoperative infection, or osteomyelitis.

  • Albinism, characterized by absence or lack of pigmentation from the hair, skin, hooves, nasal region and the eyes is rarely seen in cattle in Korea. A 15-day old calf, approximately weighing 28 kg has been conspicuously distinct from the rest of 40 herds of cattle raised in Sunchang country because of its white coat color, white muzzle and hooves and eyes with light pinkish iris. The calf was born of Korean indigenous cattle with no previously reported history of albinism since inception of the farm for over a decade period. It was assumed as a form of recessive genetic disorder. This observation was documented to present occurrence of albinism in cattle in Korea.

  • The main objective of this study was to investigate the awareness and perception of young professionals in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam countries on the ASEAN Economic Community (hereafter, AEC). Data from a survey of 575 young professionals, with approximately equal distribution from each country, were collected in June and July 2015. Research findings revealed that the knowledge and understanding of the AEC among the Gen Y professionals were still marginal. Although they lack awareness, young professionals had a good impression and perception of the AEC in connection with important benefits for them individually as well as for their country. Finally, the study revealed that the Gen Y professionals showed some level of optimistic attitude that they could succeed in the AEC as they thought that they were quite well prepared, having sufficient skills to work or to do business in other ASEAN countries.

  • Objectives : In order to research references on low back pain in Uihagimmun Methods : In respect of causes, symptoms and prescriptions for all kinds of low back pain, enlarging the range of references from books regarded as its references in Jiprye(集例) to books referred in Yeokdaeuihakseongssi(歷代醫學姓氏). Results : Beside of the books referred in Jiprye(集例) such as Seuideukhyobang(世醫得效方), Dangyesimbeop(丹溪心法), Okgimiui(玉機微義) and Injejikji(仁齋直指), the other reference books must be Sanghannon(傷寒論), Geumgweyoryak(金匱要略), Samingeugilbyeongbangjeungnon(三因 極一病證方論), Jebyeongwonhuron(諸病源候論), Jesaengbang(濟生方), Dongwonsihyobang(東 垣試效方), Maeginjeungchi(脈因證治), Bojebang(普濟方), Uihakjeongjeon(醫學正傳), Jeungchiyogyeol(證治要訣), Uihakgangmok(醫學綱目), Manbyeonghoechun(萬病回春), Gogeumuigam(古今醫鑑) and Susebowon(壽世保元) etc. Conclusions : Icheon(李梴), the author of Uihagimmun, referred not only to books mentioned in Jiprye but to books referred in Yeokdaeuihakseongssi. This book had important effect on making the contents of low back pain in Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑).

  • Objectives : Fructus mume(F. mume) has been used as a medicine for thousands of years in East Asia and reported to have effect on cognitive deficits induced by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. We investigated F. mume's effects on psychiatric and central nervous system in medical classics. Methods : 25 materia medica books and Donguibogam were searched to find psychiatric and central nervous system effects of F. mume. Two Korean Medicine doctors reviewed the effects from the clinical point of view. Results : 安心(relieve psychiatric discomfort), 令人得睡 治不眠(Treat insominia), 去煩悶(relieve chest discomfort) were psychiatric effects and 偏枯不仁(hypoesthesia accompanied with hemiplegia) was central nervous system effect of F. mume. Conclusions : Further studies will be needed to demonstrate F. mume's effects found in medical classics.

  • The purpose of this study is for science and engineering students to experience social contribution through voluntary projects. The method of research is to create and introduce the exhibits and its exhibition commentary of Science Museum for local youth. The exhibition commentary is a project that stimulates student's interests in science and technology by providing scientific knowledge and research information. Producing exhibits is a project that discovers local technologies as well as introduces its history, technology, and scientific principles to young students. Two projects confirmed the positive effects of creating opportunities for science and engineering students to contribute to society and expanding scientific content, and showed implications for engineering education.

  • The purpose of the East Asian Young Astronomers Meeting (EAYAM) is to provide a chance for young astronomers from or working in China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan to meet, learn about each other's scientific research, exchange ideas and cultural views, and find out more about leading research facilities in the different member regions. I report on the inaugural EAYAM held in Taiwan in 2003, and the future of this meeting. The purpose of the EAMA Schools is to teach young astronomers how to make best use of the research facilities of member regions. The first EAMA school is currently being organized to better inform young astronomers on using the SUBARU telescope.

  • The influence of source term release parameters on offsite health effects was examined for the YGN 3&4 nuclear power plants. The release parameters considered in this study are release height, heat content, and release time. The effects of core inventory change as a function of fuel burnup was also examined. The health effects by the change of release parameters are early fatalities, cancer fatalities, and early fatality distance. The results showed that early fatalities and early fatality distance decrease as release height increases, although it does not have significant influence on cancer fatalities. The values of both early and late health effects decrease as heat content increases. As release time increases, health consequence shows maximum value in 2 hours of release time and then decreases rapidly. As fuel burnup increases, early fatalities decrease rapidly, while cancer fatalities increase rapidly. Both cases show little variation afterward. Early fatality distance is almost same in all fuel turnup history. The information obtained through this research is very useful in developing strategies for reducing offsite consequences when combined with the influence of weather conditions on offsite risks.

  • Names attributed to villages varies from governmental administrative division to simple modest names called from the habitants. Actually, scarce names only called from the habitants remains today. While these names reflect abundant cultural, social and historical aspects we made this research based on those nominations related only to Korean traditional medicine(KTM). We could find that the most KTM related village name was famine relieve or/and medicinal plant designation like Puerariae village. Also there was names of doctors like Dasan. Another big portion was from the medicinal mineral waters like Yakbawegol which said has the properties for dermatologic desease. We suggest this study may use as a clue in the field of KTM history research.

  • The aim of the shaking table experiment is to verify the isolation effect of a storage liquid tank with multiple friction pendulum bearings. A 1:20 scale model of a real storage liquid tank that is widely used in the petroleum industry was examined by the shaking table test to compare its anchored base and isolated base. The seismic response of the tank was assessed by employing the time history input. The base acceleration, wave height and tank wall stress were used to evaluate the isolation effect. Finally, the influences of the bearing performance that characterizes the isolated tank, such as the friction force and residual displacement, were discussed.
