  • Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) has a helium refrigeration system (HRS) with the cooling capacity of 9 kW at 4.5 K. Main cold components are composed of 300 tons of superconducting (SC) magnets, main cryostat thermal shields, and SC current feeder system. The HRS comprises six gas storage tanks, a liquid nitrogen tank, the room temperature compression sector, the cold box (C/B), the 1st stage helium distribution box (DB#1), the PLC base local control system interconnected to central control tower and so on. Between HRS and cold components, there's another distribution box (DB#2) nearby the KSTAR device. The entire KSTAR device was constructed in 2007 and has been operated since 2008. This paper will present the maintenance result of the KSTAR HRS during the campaign and discuss the operation record and maintenance history of the KSTAR HRS.

  • This paper aims at understanding the transformed characteristics of expressional system of Church architecture in Korean traditional style. Through the analysis of transformed forms and its meanings of those, this paper investigates the unique process of stylistic development of Korean traditional church architecture in early modern, 1900's. The method of this study is the analyse of them after the actual field surveys of Korean traditional churches, specially eclecticism churches as the HWSAN church and KUPODONG church, and the analysis of Semiology. Theory for Semantic Interpretation of artistic objects as an objects of art and architecture. Specially, the survey concentrates on the architectural elements(the form, the architectural structure, the material, the roof shape, the window, the door, the bell tower, the plan, etc) of eclecticism churches, especially those of HWASAN church and the analysis of semiology theory contains the research results which were studied by theorists as Charles Jencks, Umberto Eco and Juan Pablo Bonta. Acceding to analysis, Korean eclecticism churches have the unique transformation process and specific meaning of the spontaneous process of development. In the results of the semiological analysis of HWASAN church, it can be revealed clearly that transformed process of form리 characteristics of HWASAN church intented to formal originality of western Gothic church, but its form and meaning were based not on any simply imported western style but on existing system of Korean architecture.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of hysterectomy on Low Back Pain(LBP) and to describe it through Oriental Medicine theory. Methods : Research was conducted by history taking of 1849 female LBP patients who visited Jaseng Oriental Medicine Hospital. Investigation was focused on the number of patients who underwent hysterectomy, and the length of time developing LBP after the surgery. Results : 178 patients(9.6%) underwent hysterectomy among 1849 patients, and it was higher than general rate of hysterectomy. In Oriental medicine, this result can be explained that it is caused by the lack of water function of spleen(腎水) from the absence of uterus, consequently it makes muscle weak and does harm to Blood and Meridian. Conclusions : History of hysterectomy has a significant influence on the development of LBP.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to suggest how to interpret the 'practice of Korean Medicine', differentiating it from 'medical practice'. Methods : I analyze the legislations and precedents regarding the practice of Korean Medicine. Results : The Korean Medicine and Pharmaceutics Promotion Act defines 'practice of Korean Medicine' and it clearly differentiates it from the definition of 'medical practice'. However, the scope of this definition is somewhat restricting and it can violate doctors of Korean Medicine's right to equality and their academic freedom. Thus, the application of this definition of the 'practice of Korean Medicine' should be limited to the field of research and development. Meanwhile, criteria of distinguishing 'practice of Korean Medicine' from 'medical practice', which used to make a sharp distinction between Medicine and Korean Medicine by rigorously applying their academic standards, are now focusing more on protecting and improving health of the people. Discussions & Conclusions : I suppose that the distinction between the 'practice of Korean Medicine' and 'medical practice' will be more focused on public health rather than the academic stance of those two medical fields. Meanwhile, in accordance with dualistic medical system, the mutual usage of medical equipment in the area of 'treatment' should be limited while it should be allowed in the area of 'diagnosis' if it satisfies requirements suggested by the Constitutional Court.

  • Laterite blocks are used for construction of masonry walls since ages in the South-western coastal areas of India. The south-west coastal areas of India lie in zone III of seismic zonation map of Indian code IS 1893-2002. In spite of the fact that laterite is the most favored masonry material in these regions of India, the structural performance of laterite masonry has not been systematically investigated. Again there are no previous studies addressing, in detail, the seismic performance of laterite masonry buildings. Now that these areas are becoming more and more important from point of view of trade and commerce, there is a need for a detailed research on the seismic response of laterite masonry structures located in these areas. The present paper reports the results of such a study of the seismic response of box-type laterite masonry structures. Time history analysis of these structures under El-Centro acceleration has been performed using commercial finite element software ANSYS. Effect of 'containment reinforcement' on the seismic response of box type laterite masonry structures has been evaluated.

  • This study is about the preservation of wooden buildings as cultural properties. I got the idea for preservation and repair of cultural properties of wooden buildings by watching the process of repairing them in Japan. The Japanese have been endeavored to restoring old wooden buildings to their original forms for more than a hundred years. The idea to change decayed materials into new materials or the new approach to the process of restoration used to be in conflict with the concept of 'Authenticity'--the criteria for evaluation of the value of cultural properties, based on the Western of thinking, established by UNESCO. Since 'Nara Conference on Authenticity', held in 1994 in Nara, however, the concept of 'Authenticity' has changed, and the peculiarity of certain cultural properties of the wooden buildings and their diversity of culture have now begun to be recognized by UNESCO. This is a crucial change for the study of preservation, repair and restoration of cultural properties of wooden buildings. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to look closely at the process of change of the concept 'Authenticity' and find a better method for preservation of cultural properties of wooden buildings.

  • The effect of combined Korean medicine treatment including facial chuna manual therapy was retrospectively investigated in patients with Bell's palsy. There were 16 patients (14 males) who received 2 months outpatient treatment following > 14 days of hospitalization. The Yanagihara score and House-Brackmann grade were used to measure the severity of symptoms and recovery. The patients (mean age 58.5 ± 24.74 years) were categorized based on their medical history of hypertension (n = 10), diabetes millitus (n = 10), or oral intake of steroids early in the diagnosis of Bell's palsy (n = 10). There was no difference between patients who had or did not have a previous history of diabetes mellitus or oral steroid. Both the Yanagihara-score and House-Brackmann grade improved significantly in the total patient sample after treatment (p < 0.001). Combined Korean medicine including facial chuna manual therapy may have a beneficial effect on patient symptoms and recovery.

  • Chirimen (silk crepe) has been one of Japan's most distinctive textiles since times and has gained a reputation worldwide as the supreme example of Japanese costume. It is because of its distinctive quality and features, transcending the history, lacation and lacal of the people who wear this form of clothing, that chirimen has continued to highly valued over a long historical period. There is a wide range of literature on the subject of chirimen written from the standpoints of introducing the various types of material, discussing its history, and looking at the origins of the textile unions. However, most such writings are little more than fragmentary attempts to describe these matters from an empirical and publicity-oriented position. Very little serious research has ever been published in this area. In the present study I examine the features of chirimen. I began by directly interviewing kimono wholesalers, kimono stores and Western-style clothing stores on the subject of chirimen in order to establish a clear image of this fabric. I then went on to examine the subject experimentally in terms of the physical properties of the fabric in connection with the features of this image. In the study of the physical properties of the material, I selected habutae as a silk fabric to offer comparisons with chirimen. Habutae is used frequently together with chirimen in garments such as semi-formal visiting kimono (homongi), kimono in non-color fabric (ironashiji), mouming kimono (mofuku), broad-sleeved kimono (tomesode and furisode), and undergarments such ad juban.

  • Since the 17th century, the society of Chosun Dynasty belonged to a period of rapid transition in many fields. As the building is a result produced on the basis of a society and economy, the general transition in a society is to be reflected into a process of building construction. Therefore an understanding or estimate of a building can be guaranteed by research of a process of building construction. Economic base factors in its process consist of material, cost, manpower, and operation system, etc. to be committed to the construction. On the premise, this paper is to examine the production of wood members and the calculation of the amount of raw woods in a process of woodwork in the construction of the government managed buildings in the late of Chosun dynasty. Construction reports, job slips, written estimates, and other documents in those days are examined for the study. To classify raw woods according to a standard size was aimed to a material management appropriately to apply each them to building size or its member size. The way to select a list of raw woods applicable to each member size, and to calculate the amount of the demanded wood was much more improved with 'Injungjeon-yeongkweon' in the year 1805 at the turning point than 'Hwaseong-seongyuk' in the year 1796. The improvement of material management brought to overcome a shortage of the amount supplied from forest preserve, and to a rationalization of building construction.
