  • In this paper, we introduce data mining techniques for short-term load forecasting (STLF). First, we use the K-mean algorithm to classify historical load data by season into four patterns. Second, we use the k-NN algorithm to divide the classified data into four patterns for Mondays, other weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The classified data are used to develop a time series forecasting model. We then forecast the hourly load on weekdays and weekends, excluding special holidays. The historical load data are used as inputs for load forecasting. We compare our results with the KEPCO hourly record for 2008 and conclude that our approach is effective.

  • In the latter half of the 1980's, Systematical Western Archival Science theory was introduced in Japan especially, provenance principle which is fundamental theory in arrangement, original order principle and understanding in level of archives groups. However, they just confirmed public records arrangement theory having done in each Prefectural Archives(文書館) in Japan since 1960's and embodied it. Among them, National Archives of Japan(國立公文書館) just followed arrangement method each ministry and office did. And Saitama Prefectural Archives(琦玉縣立文書館) grasped changes of the name of department, class, standard by class and organization and its affairs before public records arrangement. On the one hand, Japan Center for Asian Historical Records(JACAR: アジア歷史資料セン夕-) is attending on public records by web which National Archives of Japan. The Diplomatic Record Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs(外務省外交史料館). The National Institute for Defense Studies(NIDS : 防衛廳防衛硏究所) have. JACAR arranged the public records based on provenance principle following arrangement system they have.

  • In this paper, we analyzed Korean historical records of the periodic comet Halley in three periods (Three Kingdoms, the Goryeo dynasty, and the Joseon dynasty) using various sources such as Samguksagi (History of the Three Kingdoms), Goryeosa (History of the Goryeo Dynasty), and Joseonwangjosillok (Annals of the Joseon Dynasty). To determine the apparition time of the comet at each return, we referred to the works of Kronk. For the Three Kingdoms period, we could not find any record relevant to Halley's comet from Samguksagi. Instead, we examined the suggestion that the phenomenon two Suns appearing on April 1, 760 (in a luni-solar calendar), which is recorded in Samgukyusa (Renaissance of the Three Kingdoms), indicates an appearance of comet Halley during the daytime. In contrast, we found that all the returns of Halley's comet during the Goryeo dynasty are recorded, although some accounts are questioned. In addition, we found that the appearance of Halley's comet in 1145 is also mentioned in a spirit-path stele made in 1178. For the Joseon dynasty period, we found that all the returns of the comet are recorded, as with the Goryeo dynasty, except for the return of 1910, in which the former dynasty fell. In conclusion, we think that this study will be helpful for understanding Korean historical accounts of Halley's comet.

  • This study collected and analyzed records related to the Asian dust phenomenon in Korean history books. I collected a wide range of records from diverse sources and identified data for analysis. 290 records were selected through this process. These records provide a variety of information including the occurrence time and duration of the phenomenon, other natural phenomenon occurring at the same date, descriptions of the phenomenon, and so on. Reports on, Asian dust in the historical records was not continuous or uniform. However, their appearance in certain months of the year is similar to that observed in modern times. In addition, I collected 90 records showing it that can be largely divided into two viewpoints which they were a natural calamity or an unusual phenomenon. Generally, natural phenomenons in historical books are mostly recorded in viewpoint of unusual phenomenon. Nevertheless, research result verified the record as actual observational data. Consequentially, it also indicates that this data is important for research from a meteorological point of view. I think that the data collected through this study can be helpful to modern meteorological studies related to the Asian dust phenomenon.

  • This paper presents a structural performance assessment of a historical masonry clock tower both using numerical and experimental process. The numerical assessment includes developing of finite element model with considering different types of soil-structure interaction systems, identifying the numerical dynamic characteristics, finite element model updating procedure, nonlinear time-history analysis and evaluation of seismic performance level. The experimental study involves determining experimental dynamic characteristics using operational modal analysis test method. Through the numerical and experimental processes, the current structural behavior of the masonry clock tower was evaluated. The first five experimental natural frequencies were obtained within 1.479-9.991 Hz. Maximum difference between numerical and experimental natural frequencies, obtained as 20.26%, was reduced to 4.90% by means of the use of updating procedure. According to the results of the nonlinear time-history analysis, maximum displacement was calculated as 0.213 m. The maximum and minimum principal stresses were calculated as 0.20 MPa and 1.40 MPa. In terms of displacement control, the clock tower showed only controlled damage level during the applied earthquake record.

  • Samguk Yusa is a important historic record about the dynasties of ancient Korea. It consists of information about the hidden, mythical history, old languages and poems. This historical book has been translated many times since the Liberation of Korea in 1945. However, these books are the result of academic research so we are restricted in our usage of them to understand Korean history. There are many historical documentaries and TV series on Samguk Yusa. However, these programs can be viewed only and not be utilized in any way by the audience. Since the computer was introduced to the public, multimedia technology has been a good source to combine text, image, moving picture, sound, animation and graphic. Producing the CD-ROM about historical books not only produce digital images but also a valuable high quality digital information. Digitalization process also keeps the original content of the historical books as well as provide value as a research material as historical, artistic and archaeological item. Furthermore, its information would be provided through a network, like internet, to share and to promote more advanced studies. The purpose of this study is to produce the basic method of multimedia design of Samguk Yusa. This study also researches the problems of multimedia process for more effective usage.

  • Legislative stability of the production and management of electronic records and the enhancement of infrastructure have reached significant levels through relentless efforts of academic and public institutions in the field. In addition, appraisal and disposal of records also have to be done by retention periods, business functions, administrational and historical values, and certain procedures. The law specifies that public institutions must assign record managers. The underlying reason is for record managers to arbitrate the review process when records are to be evaluated and discarded and to prevent unauthorized disuses. It is also for just evaluations with the professionalism. Evaluation and discard of records have significant meanings in record management. Thus, these processes need to be handled properly in the standard record management system. Evaluation should be proceeded by the law enacted under the task functional and social agreement. Since, the record discard is decided through the technical and logical process, the support for evaluation and discard works are important above all things. In this paper, I deducted functional requirements of standard record management system by analyzing methods including the analysis of legislation and standard related to electronic records and the examination of the user's manual of record management system. I researched through the interviews of the record managers in public institutions. Based on this research, I deducted the implications for the evaluation of standard record management system and the estimation of functional requirements for discard. I also discussed future directions of improvements and follow-up studies.
