  • The purpose of this study is to present the problems of urban ecosystem imbalance in Seoul and the need to restore housing functions through comparison with Manhattan, New York, which grew earlier than Seoul and has been striving to solve urban problems and restore urban ecosystems. The residential status in urban commercial use areas was investigated through analysis of the total amount of residential space, characteristics of each type of residential building, and distribution of residential buildings. Through this, it can be seen that most of the space in Seoul's historic city center is biased toward commercial roads, and there are significantly insufficient high- and high-density mixed-use buildings suitable for urban dwellings compared to Manhattan's. In addition, it can be seen that the complex building in the historical city center of Seoul is located adjacent to the outskirts of the target site. In conclusion, Seoul's historical city center does not provide an appropriate residential space for creating an urban ecosystem, and it is necessary to come up with measures to restore housing functions.

This genre represents reality, but it is very artificial product correspondingly its concept and character. It's birth place is distributed on various regions in Italy, but the main stage was Rome. Till the middle of the 18th century Rome was the Holy city of the Grand tour, the home of the Neo-Classicism and furthermore the field where archaeology and art history began to be instituted. On such historical situation the Capriccio came out and was recognized as the best popular genre in the visual art. This study will examine the phenomena in the newly-developed archaeology and with few representative works of Giovanni Paolo Pannini as central term consider the Capriccio and the archaeological connotation. The systematical and institutional archeology which appeared at the age of the Enlightenment, on the contrary to the critical theories at the same time against capriccio, because it was regarded by them as paradoxical and too much sensitive, utilized it as a theoretical method very actively. Some among Historians and archaeologists did it, especially Francesco Bianchini distinguished the capriccio from simple imagination and made it a capacity of the knowledge. And through it he wanted to find out the historical truth. The visual art was influenced and encouraged by such attitude of the archaeology. However it's output spreaded out in various courses. While Giovanni Battista Piranesi, the best known Capriccist of the 18th century, tried to revive the antique through the epical value and his own imagination, Pannini gave priority to the strict historical research. In the such context Panni succeed Giovanni Battista Nolli who made the great map of the city Rome. Their Capriccio profited motive and was inspired by the historians and archaeologists such as Bianchini and Muratori. The Capriccio reflects not only the academic and popular interest for the antique, but also influenced on the upcoming scientific archaeology vice versa. It caused by their reasonable Interpretation and restoration of the antique through the visual medium. Finally as archaeological landscape Pannini's Capriccio is a historical case, in that the Capriccio applied the theoretical method of the archaeology to make art. • The Cultural Heritage Administration has selected Seoul Fortress Wall as the representative heritage of Korea to be applied for being registered as UNESCO World Heritage and announced the plan to restore and organize it, which has increased the interest to the Seoul Fortress Wall, the Historical Site No. 10. The great work to make the heritage value of Walls, 4 Big Gates and 4 Small Gates composing the Seoul Fortress wall with the length of 18.627 km to be recognized worldwide has limits if it is focused only on the physical restoration. It is because the Seoul Fortress Wall represents the long historical and cultural value as the space of life which connects closely the capital city and its vicinity. We need the plan to discover and utilize historical and cultural contents of Seoul Fortress Wall and its vicinity. Especially, Gwangheemun, which is one of the four Small Gates of Seoul Fortress Wall, is a precious cultural heritage which represents the transition of fortification technology of Chosun period as the space representing ordinary people. However, now Gwangheemun and its vicinity does not stand out the charm because of passive accessibility, landscape falling behind and absence of program. This made the lack of domestic and overseas tourists and the convenient space and various contents. This reality is because the value of space has been considered simply as a cultural heritage without considering the traditional, historical and cultural specificity. Therefore, this study is aimed to find the meaning and value of Gwangheemun by discovering its own latent intangible cultural, historical and artistic resource, and to find the way to connect with Gwangheemun, the existing tangible traditional architectural space and the way of vitalizing Gwangheemun as a new space.

  • This landscape design proposal was presented to a design competition for the master plan of Ttukseom Sup, which was held by the City of Seoul in March, 2003. The site is located at 1-685, Sungsu-dong, Sung-dong-gu and has an area of 1,156,498$m^2$. The judging criteria for landscape design set by the City of Seoul could be articulated as follows: first, the proposal should be nature-oriented with groves that can be accessed easily by citizens; second, the proposal should not be facilities-oriented but plants-oriented groves that utilize existing plants; third, the proposal should present its own identity reflecting its historical aspects and geographical location. This proposal has been approached first by redefining the meanings of the old Korean village groves and second, by proposing new cultural infrastructures with the groves corresponding to recent cultural trends.
