  • In a previous study by Kim et al. (2000), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) has been demonstrated to be effective against algae that cause red tides. To secure the environmental safely of the chemical in practical use, effect of NaOCl, at concentrations required for algicidal activity, on the histology of rockfish and little neck clam was examined. When the animals were exposed to NaOCl at concentrations of 0.5 or 2ppm for 1 hr, there was no exposure-associated histological change in either animal. As the experimental exposure condition was set in consideration of the use, our results provide safety information necessary for practical application to marine fields.

  • An astroblastoma is a rare primary glial tumor occurring preferentially in young adults. It is characterized by a perivascular arrangement of the tumor cells forming perivascular pseudorosettes mimicking ependymomas. The histogenesis of astroblastoma is unclear, despite a number of studies to determine its possible cellular origin. We have experienced a case of astroblastoma located at the temporal lobe. It presented as a large, well-circumscribed, and highly enhanced mass lesion on magnetic resonance images[MRI]. The tumor was well demarcated and did not infiltrate the brain, which made complete removal possible. Here, we report and discuss the characteristic histological and radiological features of this case.

  • The toxicity of purified ricln from Ricinus communis to rats was examined by histological and histochemical methods. Sprague-Dawley rats were injected intraperitoneally with 75$\mu\textrm{g}$/kg body weight of ricin and were sacrified at itntervals of 6, 24, 48 and 120 hours after injectoon. The major morphological changes, such as cloudy swelling, hydropic degeneration, necrosis, fatty change, blood congestion, increase of Kupffer cells in number and extension of sinusoids, were obvious in the liver of experimental group. These morphological changes of hepatic cells were mainly observed in both the periportal and midlobular region of hepatic lobule. The extension of sinusoids was obvious in the controlobular region. And glycogen dlstrlbution of hepatic cells tended to decrease in the same region showing morphlogical changes as compared with the control group.

  • Objectives : Betula platyphylla var. japonica extract (BPE) was used to determine the modulation of cytokine secretion, the activation of inflammatory and allergic factor and the inhibition of gene expression. Inflammatory and allergic cytokines as IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-${\alpha}$, NO and COX-2 were measured to use effectively on improvement or treatment of atopic dermatitis. Methods : We used NC/Nga mouse induced by atopic dermatitis to observe the effects of BPE on the weight, water and feed, blood test, weight of organs, histological change, total IgE and histological change of main organs. Results : BPE is effective on anti-inflammatory and allergic reaction. However, further study is needed to prove which component of BPE indicates effective pharmacological action. Conclusions : The above results suggest that Phellinus igniarius Quel extract could be applicable for improvement of several skin functions.

  • Although Dacron and ePTFE have most widely been used for artificial vascular grafts, these materials cannot be used for small-diameter grafts (l.D.<6mm) due to thrombotic occlusion. To overcome this limitation, a small-diameter vascular graft was developed with stem cell and tissue engineering method. Autologous bone marrow stem cells were cultured and seeded onto small-diameter (4mm) collagen tubular matrices. The matrices were anastomosed to carotid arteries in canine models. Prior to implantation, histological and electron microscopical examination revealed stem cell adhesion and growth on the matrices. Angiography indicated that the vascular grafts maintained patent for 8 weeks. Histological examination showed the regeneration of endothelium, media and adventitia in the grafts. This study may allow us to step forward to the development of tissue-engineered small-diameter vascular graft appropriate for clinical applications.

  • This paper presents a detailed pharmacognostical study of the plant drug Hybanthus enneaspermus (L.) F. Muell (Violaceae), an important drug in the Indian system of medicine. The leaf and stem samples were studied using procedures of light, confocal microscopy, WHO recommended physico-chemical determinations and authentic phytochemical procedures. The physico-chemical, morphological, and histological parameters presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to establish the authenticity of H. enneaspermus and may possibly help to differentiate the drug from its adulterants.

  • The present study was carried out to observe the histological changes of the parenchymal organs of the rats, rabbits and dogs intramuscularly injected with Rompun. The results observed are snmmarized as follows; The hematologic changes of the rabbits and dogs administered with Rompun were a pronounced decrease in erythrocytes and leucocytes. The percentage of lympocytes was decreased, while that of neutrophils was increased. There were severe hyperemia of spleen, hyperemia and extention of the central vein of the liver, centrilobular degeneration of liver, hyperemia and hemorrhage of the kidney, necrosis and hydropic degeneration of renal tubule, hyperemia of pulmonary alveolar septa and pulmonary edema. and in the cases injected with Rompun and histamine or pentothal sodium at the same time, the microscopical findings described above were more conspicuous than the cases injected with Rompun alone.

  • The author observed the effect of x-ray irradiation on the tooth germ development of the rat fetuses. The lower right abdomen of the pregnant rats were exposed to x-ray irradiation (400 rads) on 9½th day of qestation. At 18½th day of qestation, the fetuses were removed from their mothers and histological sections of molar region were prepared. The results were as folows: 1. In the experimental fetuses, no significant changes appeared in the histological aspects of the enamel pulp, except the poor development of the innerenamel epithelium in the cusp region. 2. Pulp cells of cusp region in the irradiated fetuses were not differentiated to odontoblasts, The arrangement and population of pulp cells showed marked regional differences in the dental papilla. 3. Developmental features of dental follicle of irradiated fetuses were similar with controls.

  • Histological observation of micropore-originated haploid rice callus was reported previously. Present study was attempted to clarify the growth or development of the calli when they were transferred to differentiation media prepared exclusively for differentiation of plantlets. When the callus was transferred to differentiation medium, the cells and tissues became radially elongated. Meristematic tissues were present but few in number, and their structures were quite different from those grown in the propagaton medium. Differentiation of tracheid, chloroplast, and epidermis-like cell layer, and formation of gap in the callus tissue were more conspicuous in differentiation media. Approximately ten days after transfer of callus to differentiation medium, plantlet was formed.

  • Hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular tumor with involvement of the liver, brain, long bones, and lung. Among the 6 histological subtypes, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is the most aggressive. Its occurrence in the mediastinum is quite rare, and very few cases have been documented. The reported cases in the literature have described difficulties in the preoperative diagnosis due to the unusual histological appearance of the tumor. Immunohistochemistry remains the mainstay for a definitive diagnosis. Due to its low incidence, there is no standard treatment for mediastinal EHE, but curative resection is the preferred treatment option where possible, with chemotherapy used as an adjuvant treatment or in cases of widespread inoperable disease. The present case study describes an aggressive EHE occurring in an 18-year-old woman in the anterior mediastinum.
