  • An image retrieval system is a piece of software that searches identical or similar images based on various image-specific features. This paper proposes a trademark image retrieval system that uses image colors and forms. In the proposed system, input images are segmented into several other regions, and color distribution histograms for different regions are extracted for use as color information. The proposed system uses form information through the preprocessing process such as boundary surface extraction, centroid extraction, angular sampling and, and through calculating the sums of the distances between the centroid and the boundary surfaces, standard deviations, and the ratios between long and short axes. Like this, the color and form information extracted is used to perform retrieval through measuring similarity.

  • We present a test of the emission statistics of active galactic nuclei (AGN), probing the connection between the red-noise temporal power spectra and multi-modal flux distributions known from observations. We simulate AGN lightcurves under the assumption of uniform stochastic emission processes for different power-law indices of their respective power spectra. For sufficiently shallow slopes (power-law indices (${\beta}{\leq}1$), the flux distributions (histograms) of the resulting lightcurves are approximately Gaussian. For indices corresponding to steeper slopes (${\beta}{\geq}1$), the flux distributions become multi-modal. This finding disagrees systematically with results of recent mm/radio observations. Accordingly, we conclude that the emission from AGN does not necessarily originate from uniform stochastic processes even if their power spectra suggest otherwise. Possible mechanisms include transitions between different activity states and/or the presence of multiple, spatially disconnected, emission regions.

  • A total life model was developed to assess the service life of aging aircraft. The primary focus of this paper is the development of crack growth life projection using the response surface method. Crack growth life projection is a necessary component of the total life model. The study showed that the number of load cycles N needed for a crack to propagate to a specified size can be linearly related to the geometric parameter, material, and stress level of the component considered when all the variables are transformed to logarithmic values. By the Central Limit theorem, the ln N was approximated by Gaussian distribution. This Gaussian model compared well with the histograms of the number of load cycles generated from simulated crack growth curves. The outcome of this study will aid engineers in designing their crack growth experiments to develop the stochastic crack growth models for service life assessments.

  • In this study, fur the shape-based image retrieval, a method using local differential invariants is proposed. This method calculates the differential invariant feature vector at every feature point extracted by Harris comer point detector. Then through vector quantization using LBG algorithm, all feature vectors are represented by a codebook index. All images are indexed by the histogram of codebook index, and by comparing the histograms the similarity between images is obtained. The proposed method is compared with the existing method by performing experiments for image database including various 1100 trademarks.

  • This paper proposes a new method of retrieving images from large image databases. The method is based on VQ(Vector Quantization) of local texture information at interest points automatically detected in an image. The texture features are extracted by Gabor wavelet filter bank, and rearranged for rotation. These features are classified by VQ and then construct a pattern histogram. Retrievals are performed by just comparing pattern histograms between images. Experimental results have shown the robustness of the proposed method to image rotation, small scale change, noise addition and brightness change and also shown the possibility of the retrieval by a partial image.

  • This research features efficient detection of obstacles, especially vehicles, in the forward direction of navigation for the development of unmanned automous vehicle. We separate image regions into ground and non-ground planes using the Helmholtz shearing technique in order to reliably exclude regions that do not contain obstacles. We propose a computationally simple and efficient method for the detection of vehicles in the forward direction by analysis of horizontally and vertically projected histograms of residual disparity map obtained from Helmholtz shearing. We have experimented the proposed method on real outdoor stereo data. Experimental results show that our method gives accurate detection of forward vehicles and is computationally very efficient.

  • Between traffic-induced vibration of a bridge and fatigue damage of its attached structures are very closely related. But any evaluation and design method considering the fatigue damage is not established yet. As an experimental method of evaluation of the fatigue durability, a method based on cumulative damage using a stress range histogram has been often used. However, to use the method, the fatigue durability of unmeasured points could not be evaluated. Then, in this paper, dynamic analysis of a sign frame on a bridge is carried out based on the vibration data of the bridge. And model optimization was performed for good agreement between measured responses and computed responses. As a result, we could get stress range histograms and calculate fatigue durability of unmeasured points.

  • We define a crossing point $x_0$ such that f(x)$\geq$g(x) for x$\leq$$x_0$ and f(x)$\leq$g(x) for x>$x_0$ where f and g are probability density functions. We may encounter suchy situation when we compare two histograms from two independent observations. For example two contingency tables where initially admitted students and actually enrolled students are classified according to their high school ranking may show such situation, In this paper we consider maximum likelihood estimation of cell probabilities when a crossing point exists, We first assume a known crossing point and find an estimator. The estimation procedure for the case of unknown crossing point is just a straightforward extension. A real data is analyzed for an illustrative purpose.

  • In this paper, we present a novel method to extract face representation based on multi-resolution spatial pyramid. In our method, a face is subdivided into increasingly finer sub-regions (local regions) and represented at multiple levels of histogram representations. To cope with misaligned problem, patch-based local descriptor extraction has been also developed in a novel way. To preserve multiple levels of detail in local characteristics and also encode holistic spatial configuration, histograms from all levels of spatial pyramid are integrated by using dimensionality reduction and feature combination, leading to our spatial-pyramid face feature representation. We incorporate our proposed face features into general face recognition pipeline and achieve state-of-the-art results on challenging face recognition problems.
