In conventional, skin detection methods using for skin color definitions is based on prior knowledge. By experimentation, the threshold value for dividing the background from the skin region is determined subjectively. A drawback of such techniques is that their performance is dependent on a threshold value which is estimated from repeated experiments. To overcome this, the present paper introduces a skin region detection method. This method uses a histogram approximation based on the mean shift algorithm. This proposed method applies the mean shift procedure to a histogram of a skin map of the input image. It is generated by comparing with the standard skin colors in the $C_bC_r$ color space. It divides the background from the skin region by selecting the maximum value according to the brightness level. As the histogram has the form of a discontinuous function. It is accumulated according to the brightness values of the pixels. It is then, approximated by a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) using the Bezier curve technique. Thus, the proposed method detects the skin region using the mean shift procedure to determine a maximum value. Rather than using a manually selected threshold value, as in existing techniques this becomes the dividing point. Experiments confirm that the new procedure effectively detects the skin region.
In this paper, we have proposed an image contrast control method using brightness preserving on the FPD(Flat Panel Display). The proposed method can be easily applied to the FPD required real-time processing, since hardware complexity is greatly reduced using linear approximation method of CDF(Cumulative Density Function). For effective processing of the proposed algorithm, we have utilized the sample value of CDF and Barrel Shift. Visual test and standard deviation of their histogram have been introduced to evaluate the resultant output images of the pro-posed method and the original ones.
Recently in the area-based stereo matching field, Adaptive Support-Weight (ASW) method that weights matching cost adaptively according to the luminance intensity and the geometric difference shows promising matching performance. However, ASW requires more computational cost than other matching algorithms do and its real-time implementation becomes impractical. By applying Integral Histogram technique after approximating to the Bilateral filter equation, the computational time of ASW can be restricted in constant time regardless of the support window size. However, Integral Histogram technique causes loss of the matching accuracy during approximation process of the original ASW equation. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that maintains the ASW algorithm's matching accuracy while reducing the computational costs. In the proposed algorithm, we propose Sub-Block method that groups the pixels within the support area. We also propose the method adjusting the disparity search range depending on edge information. The proposed technique reduces the calculation time efficiently while improving the matching accuracy.
We introduce a novel Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) algorithm designed to improve the performance of thermal-inertial odometry. Thermal infrared image, though advantageous for feature extraction in low-light conditions, typically suffers from a high noise level and significant information loss during the 8-bit conversion. Our algorithm overcomes these limitations by approximating a 14-bit raw pixel histogram into a Gaussian mixture model. The conversion method effectively emphasizes image regions where texture for visual tracking is abundant while reduces unnecessary background information. We incorporate the robust learning-based feature extraction and matching methods, SuperPoint and SuperGlue, and zero velocity detection module to further reduce the uncertainty of visual odometry. Tested across various datasets, the proposed algorithm shows improved performance compared to other state-of-the-art VIO algorithms, paving the way for robust thermal-inertial odometry.
In this paper, we have proposed the contrast control method using brightness preserving on the FPD(Flat Panel Display). The proposed algorithms consist of three blocks: the contrast enhancement, the white-level-expander, and the black-level-expander. The proposed method has employed probability density function in order to control the brightness of the image changed extremely. In order for real-time processing, we have calculated cumulative density function using the linear approximation method. The image histogram and image quality were compared with the conventional image enhancement algorithms. The proposed methods have been used in display devices that need image enhancement such as LCD TV, PDP, and FPD.
In this paper, we propose a new blind image watermarking method in wavelet domain. It is necessary to find out watermark insertion location in blind watermark. We use horizontal and vertical difference of LL components to select watermark insertion location, because increment or decrement of successive components is rarely changed in LL band. A pseudo-random sequence is used as a watermark. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust to various kinds of attacks such as JPEG lossy compression, averaging, median filtering, resizing, histogram equalization, and additive Gaussian noise.

At existing skin detection methods using skin color information defined based on the prior knowldege, threshold value to be used at the stage of dividing the backround and the skin region was decided on a subjective point of view through experiments. Also, threshold value was selected in a passive manner according to their background and illumination environments in these existing methods. These existing methods displayed a drawback in that their performance was fully influenced by the threshold value estimated through repetitive experiments. To overcome the drawback of existing methods, this paper propose a skin region detection method using a histogram approximation based on the mean shift algorithm. The proposed method is to divide the background region and the skin region by using the mean shift method at the histogram of the skin-map of the input image generated by the comparison of the similarity with the standard skin color at the CbCr color space and actively finding the maximum value converged by brightness level. Since the histogram has a form of discontinuous function accumulated according to the brightness value of the pixel, it gets approximated as a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) using the Bezier Curve method. Thus, the proposed method detects the skin region by using the mean shift method and actively finding the maximum value which eventually becomes the dividing point, not by using the manually selected threshold value unlike other existing methods. This method detects the skin region high performance effectively through experiments.

In this study, we have proposed a pre-processing algorithm newly developed for improving the tracking efficiency of the optical flow method. The developed pre-processing algorithm consists of a median filter, binarization, morphology, canny edge, contour detecting and an approximation method. In order to evaluate whether the optical flow tracking capacity increases, this study applied the pre-processing algorithm to the Lucas-Kanade(LK) optical flow algorithm, and comparatively analyzed its images and tracking results with those of optical flow without the pre-processing algorithm and with the existing pre-processing algorithm(composed of median filter and histogram equalization). As a result, it was observed that the tracking performance derived from the LK optical flow algorithm with the pre-processing algorithm, shows better tracking accuracy, compared to the one without the pre-processing algorithm and the one with the existing pre-processing algorithm. It seems to have resulted by successful segmentation for characteristic areas and subdivision into inner and outer contour lines.
Histograms have been getting a lot of attention recently. Histograms are commonly utilized in commercial database systems to capture attribute value distributions for query optimization Recently, in the advent of researches on approximate query answering and stream data, the interests in histograms are widely being spread. The simplest approach assumes that the attributes in relational tables are independent by AVI(Attribute Value Independence) assumption. However, this assumption is not generally valid for real-life datasets. To alleviate the problem of approximation on multi-dimensional data with multiple one-dimensional histograms, several techniques such as wavelet, random sampling and multi-dimensional histograms are proposed. Among them, GENHIST is a multi-dimensional histogram that is designed to approximate the data distribution with real attributes. It uses overlapping buckets that allow more efficient approximation on the data distribution. In this paper, we propose a scheme, OPT that can determine the optimal frequencies of overlapped buckets that minimize the SSE(Sum Squared Error). A histogram with overlapping buckets is first generated by GENHIST and OPT can improve the histogram by calculating the optimal frequency for each bucket. Our experimental result confirms that our technique can improve the accuracy of histograms generated by GENHIST significantly.
In this paper, a method of the decision of the road direction for ALV(Autonomous Land Vehicle) road following by region-based segmentation is presented. The decision of the road direction requires extracting road regions from images in real-time to guide the navigation of ALV on the roadway. Two thresholds to discriminate between road and non-road region in the image are easily decided, using knowledge of problem region and polygonal approximation that searches multiple peaks and valleys in histogram of a road image. The most likely road region of the binary image is selected from original image by these steps. The location of a vanishing point to indicate the direction of the road can be obtained applying it to X-Y profile of the binary road region again. It can successfully steer a ALV along a road reliably, even in the presence of fluctuation of illumination condition, bad road surface condition such as hidden boundaries, shadows, road patches, dirt and water stains, and unusual road condition. Pyramid structure also saves time in processing road images and a real-time image processing for achieving navigation of ALV is implemented. The efficacy of this approach is demonstrated using several real-world road images.
