  • A hinge is the most important part constituting door. Nowadays, the hinge is subdivided all the more under the category of the function, shape and material and is enlarged at the usage. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the manufacturing technique and more specialized design must be developed. As the structural analysis is carried on the hinge model mounted at door in this study, the deformation, stress distribution and fatigue life are analyzed when the door is applied with uniform force. The durabilities of hinge models due to each shape are anticipated through this study. It is thought to be contributed at developing and designing more improved hinge model with durability. And it is possible to be grafted onto the convergence technique at design and show the esthetic sense.

  • For the determination of instantaneous centre of rotation in the mandibular movement, the habitual opening path was recorded on the sagittal tracing plate by a Gnathorecorder attached on the lower anterior teeth which was designed for this study. The opening path was demonstrated mathematically and the instantaneous centre of rotation in the opening path were calculated and plotted by computer programs, and then a computer graphic movement of the mandible was obtained according to the opening path. The hinge path of posterior border movement was graphied by the Gnathorecorder as well and demonstated mathematically. This hinge path was compared with the same obtained by Visitrainer to prove a reliability of the Gnathorecorder. The results obtained from this study were as follows. 1. The habitual opening path and hinge path obtained from the Gnathorecorder movement were expressed mathematically as follows: $y=0.11x^2-0.66x+3.09$ (equation of opening path), $y=0.04x^2+0.21x+3.71$ (equation of hinge path), and a kinematic hinge axis was not shown in the equation of kings path. 2. The early habitual opening movement of the mandible demonstrated almost a straight opening path or an arc motion with the larger radius and it's centre of rotation moved parallelly in the more rear and lower position than a kinematic hinge axis. 3. Instantaneous centre of rotation occured along with the translation of the condyle, and mandible was rotated around an axis in the close to the maximum opening and then moved toward the forward and upward position. 4. There were some similarities between the articular eminence and the movement pattern of a special point which was the kinematic hinge axis.

  • The plastic hinge lengths of beams and columns are a critical demand parameter in the nonlinear analysis of structures using the finite element method. The numerical model of a plastic hinge plays an important role in evaluating the response and damage of a structure to earthquakes or other loads causing the formation of plastic hinges. Previous research demonstrates that the plastic hinge length of reinforced concrete (RC) columns is closely related to section size, reinforcement ratio, reinforcement strength, concrete strength, axial compression ratio, and so on. However, because of the limitations of testing facilities, there is a lack of experimental data on columns with large section sizes and high axial compression ratios. In this work, we conducted a series of quasi-static tests for columns with large section sizes (up to 700 mm) and high axial compression ratios (up to 0.6) to explore the propagation of plastic hinge length during the whole loading process. The experimental results show that besides these parameters mentioned in previous work, the plastic hinge of RC columns is also affected by loading amplitude and size effect. Therefore, an approach toward considering the effect of these two parameters is discussed in this work.

  • This paper contains the test method to obtain aerodynamic hinge moments acting on the control surface of air vehicle wing. During the flight, hinge moments make difference between actual control surface angle and control angle which is measured by sensor of actuator. The hinge moments can be obtained by using this difference. Static ground load test and calibration test were conducted to obtain torsional stiffness of control surface actuation system. This results are used to calculate hinge moments. In addition, the mechanical errors of actuation system such as slip angle of mounting point and backlash could be estimated. Using flight test results, this experimental measurement method of hinge moment acting on control surface is conducted. The results of this method are similar to those of numerical simulation method, and the validity of this method is proved.

  • The setting of values on door hinge mounting compensation for door assembly tolerance is a constant quality issue in vehicle production. Generally, heuristic methods are used in satisfying appropriate door gap and level difference, flushness to improve quality. However, these methods are influenced by the engineer's skills and working environment and result an increasement of development costs. In order to solve these problems, the system which suggests hinge mounting compensation value using CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) analysis is proposed in this study. A structural analysis model was constructed to predict the door gap and level difference, flushness through CAE based on CAD (Computer Aided Design) data. The deformations of 6-degrees of freedom which can occur in real vehicle doors was considered using a stiffness model which utilize an analysis model. The analysis model was verified using 3D scanning of real vehicle door hinge deformation. Then, system model which applying the structural analysis model suggested the final adjustment amount of the hinge mounting to obtain the target door gap and the level difference by inputting the measured value. The proposed system was validated using the simulation and showed a reliability in vehicle hinge mounting compensation process. This study suggests the possibility of using the CAE analysis for setting values of hinge mounting compensation in actual vehicle production.

  • This paper describes kinematic analysis of a 6-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) ultra-precision positioning stage based on a flexure hinge. The stage is designed for processes which require ultra-precision and high load capacities, e.g. wafer-level precision bonding/assembly. During the initial design process, inverse and forward kinematic analyses were performed to actuate the precision positioning stage and to calculate workspace. A two-step procedure was used for inverse kinematic analysis. The first step involved calculating the amount of actuation of the horizontal actuation units. The second step involved calculating the amount of actuation of the vertical actuation unit, given the the results of the first step, by including a lever hinge mechanism adopted for motion amplification. Forward kinematic analysis was performed by defining six distance relationships between hinge positions for in-plane and out-of-plane motion. Finally, the result of a circular path actuation test with respect to the x-y, y-z, and x-z planes is presented.

  • This paper presents an optimal design and the performance evaluation of two-axis nano positioning stage with round notched flexure hinges. A flexure hinge mechanism with round notched flexure hinges is to guide the linear motions of a moving plate in the nano positioning stage. A Min-Max algorithm is applied to the design of the flexure hinge mechanism for nano positioning stage. In the design process, the structure of the flexure hinge mechanism is fixed, then the radius of a round hole and the width of two round holes are chosen as design variables, and finally the do sign variables are calculated by the Min-Max algorithm. The machined flexure hinge mechanism, stack type PZTs for actuation and capacitance type displacement sensors for position measurement are assembled into the nano positioning stage. The experimental results of the manufactured nano positioning stage show the first modal resonance frequency of 197 Hz, the operating range of 40 um, and the resolution of 3 nm.

  • The high-technology industries including a semi-conductor and an information communication need an ultra-precision technology from the technological points of view. Nano technology based on an ultra-precision technology is being studied to overcome the delicate technology that may occur in the semi-conductor fields. Then, the transferring equipment with high resolution and long displacement becomes an important technology. The goal of this study is to analyze the displacement magnification mechanism driven by piezoelectric actuator which has high resolution and fast response characteristics using flexure hinge with the merits of soft displacement, negligible back-lash and stick-slip, and no-lubrication. The analyses to reduce the magnification losses occurred during the magnification process are performed using ANSYS software based on FEM. The five design variables such as arm thickness, thickness of hinge, radius of hinge, length of input side at the 1st lever and magnification ratio of 1st lever are optimized to induce the maximum magnification ratio using Taguchi method.
