This paper reports a case study of aboutment displacement and pavement settlement observed at the construction site for highway bridges. The emphasis was on quantifying the horizontal deflections of about and pavement settlement on the backfill surface. It is shown that in soft clay, bridge aboutments on pile foundations are subjected to lateral earth pressures due to lateral soil movement. Based on the results analyzed, the earth pressure was predicted by deflection shape of piles based on the results of a numerical analysis and an analytical study. Also, the long term settlement of soil below pavement was estimated.
As modern industry go further, a rigid concrete pavement has been widely constructed. The load carrying capacity of the flexible asphalt pavements is brought about by a layered system, distributing the load over the subgrade, rather than by the bending action of the slab. On the other hand, the rigid pavement, because of its rigidity and high modulus of elasticity, tends to distribute the traffic load over wide subbases, and its capacity of the strength is supplied by the slab itself. Thus, it is necessary to study the structural behavior of concrete slab under the variations of temperature changes and applied traffic loads. It reguires the development of finite element analysis program for the concrete highway pavement, which provides better understanding of concrete pavement behavior and effective design data to highway engineers.
A spalling model for jointed connote pavements(JCP) was developed using the data of distresses, climates, and materials at the sections of long-term pavement performance(LTPP) investigation. The total of forty-four spatting distress data was collected at twenty-two JCP LTPP sections in 1999 and in 2004. In addition, the data of climates, geometric shapes of the slabs, and material properties was also collected at those times. Factors significantly influencing the spalling distress were found by a sensitivity analysis for the data. Consequently, a spatting model was developed by a multi-regression analysis for the factors. The model showed reasonable trend of the spatting development comparing to other foreign models.

An experiment with the objective of providing guidelines for joint depth determination and timing of contraction joint sawcutting to avert uncontrolled cement concrete pavement cracking has been conducted. Theoretical analysis and laboratory tests were performed to help in understanding and analyzing the field observation. Using two-dimensional elastic fracture mechanics, the influence of several parameters on crack propagation was delineated by a parametric study, involving initial notch ratio, joint spacing, Young's modulus and thermal expansion coefficient of concrete, temperature gradient, and modulus of subgrade reaction. Bimaterials made of rock plus cement mortar and rock plus polymer mortar were applied to the concrete in a field test section, and they were subjected to fracture tests. These tests have shown that fracture mechanics is a powerful tool not only in judging the quality of the jointed cement concrete pavement but also in providing a criterion for crack propagation and delamination. Based on fracture mechanics, a method is proposed to determine the joint depth, sawcut timing, and spacing of the jointed cement concrete pavement. This method has successfully been applied to a test section in Seohaean expressway. This study also summarizes the research results obtained from a field test for jointed plain concrete pavement, which was also carried out on the Seohaean expressway.
In Korea, drones, which are at the core of the 4th industrial revolution, are used to promote Korean New Deal policies to digitalize the SOC. Overseas, the use of convergence sensors, such as thermal imaging cameras, on drones is increasing in various industrial fields. In this research, to improve pavement quality in highway bridge pavement construction, a thermal imaging camera was mounted on a drone to measure and verify the temperature of the pavement work section. Using a laser thermometer allows the partial measurement of pavement temperature. It was confirmed that the proposed method allows not only real-time temperature monitoring of the whole pavement work section but also uniformity verification by checking temperature distribution. The proposed method has the potential to control highway pavement quality and enable quick decision-making on traffic opening times by reducing the possibility of misjudging road opening times(pavement surface temperature ≦ 40℃).

PURPOSES: There is a need to develop a method to incorporate tire-pavement noise in the pavement management system. Tire-pavement noise highly depends on the characteristics of pavement texture. Therefore, estimation of texture characteristics may give useful information to predict tire-pavement noise. This study aimed to find the relationship between tire-pavement noise and MPD(Mean Profile Depth) for concrete pavement. METHODS: MPD and tire-pavement noise were collected on the number of expressway sections including Central Inland Test Road in Korea. Statistical analysis was performed to find the correlationship between MPD and tire-pavement noise. In addition, multiple regression analysis to find the tire-pavement noise based on MPD and type of concrete pavement texture. RESULTS: Linear relationship between MPD and tire-pavement noise is observed for concrete pavement. Furthermore, a forensic equation to estimate tire-pavement noise based on MPD and texture types of concrete pavement is suggested. CONCLUSIONS: Tire-pavement noise on concrete pavement can be predicted based on the consideration of texture type and MPD estimation.
PURPOSES: This study is to develop the deduct value curves for the calculation of pavement condition index of asphalt airfield pavement. METHODS: To develop the deduct value curves of asphalt airfield pavement, panel rating was conducted to decide the pavement condition based on pavement distress type, severity, and density. RESULTS: Results show that standard deviation of deduct values by panel rating is increased at higher severity level and as damage density increases. The deduct value of alligator cracking show the highest. CONCLUSIONS: The deduct value curves based on panel rating could be used without existing problems which were occurred in Shahin's method.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of restraint (DOR) of longitudinal steel at continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) against environmental loadings. METHODS : To measure the longitudinal steel strain, 3-electrical resistance and self-temperature compensation gauges were installed to CRCP test section (thickness = 250mm, steel ratio = 0.7%) and continuously measured 10 min. intervals during 259 days. In order to properly analyze the steel strains first, temperature compensation process has been conducted. Secondly, measured steel strains were divided into 12 phases with different events such as before paving, during concrete hardening, and after first cracking, etc. RESULTS : Thermal strain rate (TSR) concept is defined as the linear strain variations with temperature changes and restraints rate of longitudinal steel against environmental loadings (especially thermal loading) with different cases is defined as degree of restraint(DOR). New concept of DOR could be indirect indicator of crack width behaviors of CRCP. CONCLUSIONS : Before paving, DOR of longitudinal steel is almost same at the coefficient of thermal expansion of steel ($12.44m/m/^{\circ}C$) because of no restraint boundary condition. After concrete pouring, DOR is gradually changed into -1 due to concrete stiffness developing with hydration. After first cracking at crack induced area, values of DOR are around -3~-5. The negative DOR stands for the crack width behavior instead of steel strain behavior. During winter season, DOR reached to -5.77 as the highest, but spring this values gradually reduced as -1.7 as the lowest. Based on this observation, we can presume crack width decreased over time within the time frame of this study. This finding is not consistent with the current theory on crack width variations over time, so further study is necessary to identify the causes of crack width reducing. One of the reasons could be related to concrete stress re-distribution and stress relaxation.
The primary objective of this study is to characterize traffic axle loadings that consider Korea specific traffic conditions for developing mechanistic-based pavement design method as a part of Korea Pavement Research Program(KPRP). Although the concept of equivalent single axle load(ESAL) has been generally used since the 1960s for the pavement design, the mechanistic-based pavement design procedure requires more accurate axle loading data on the specific pavement. In this study, axle loading data were collected according to vehicle type and highway functional classification. Axle-load spectrum was then standardized by cumulative density function(cdf), because the axle load spectrum could vary from the observed site, truck traffic volume, and truck type, Finally, this study presented the procedure and S-shaped exponential models for characterizing axle load spectra according to vehicle type and highway functional classification.
