  • A simplified method for the computation of first second and higher order derivatives of eigenvalues and eigenvectors derivatives associated with repeated eigenvalues is presented. Adjacent eigenvectors and orthonormal conditions are used to compose an algebraic equation whose order is (n+m)x(n+m), where n is the number of coordinates and m is the number of multiplicity of the repeated eigenvalues. The algebraic equation developed can be used to compute derivatives of both eigenvalues and eigenvectors simultaneously. Since the coefficient matrix in the proposed algebraic equation is non-singular, symmetric and based on N-space it is numerically stable and very efficient compared to previous methods. This method can be consistently applied to structural systems with structural design parameters and mechanical systems with lumped design parameters. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the finite element model of the cantilever beam is considered.

  • This paper deals with the analysis of vibration of antisymmetric angle-ply plates using spline method for higher order shear theory. Free vibration of laminated plates is addressed to show the capability of the present method in the vicinity of higher order shear deformation theory and simply supported edges of plates. The coupled differential equations are obtained in terms displacement and rotational functions. These displacement and rotational functions are approximated using cubic and quantic spline. A generalized eigenvalue problem is obtained and solved numerically for an eigenfrequency parameter and an associated eigenvector of spline coefficients. The antisymmetric angle-ply fiber orientation are taken as design variables. Numerical results enable us to examine the frequencies for various geometric and material parameters and accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method is also verified by comparative study.

  • This article focuses on the study of the buckling behavior of two-dimensional functionally graded (2D-FG) nanosize tubes, including porosity, based on the first shear deformation and higher-order theory of the tube. The nano-scale tube is simulated using the nonlocal gradient strain theory, and the general equations and boundary conditions are derived using Hamilton's principle for the Zhang-Fu's tube model (as a higher-order theory) and Timoshenko beam theory. Finally, the derived equations are solved using a numerical method for both simply-supported and clamped boundary conditions. A parametric study is performed to investigate the effects of different parameters, such as axial and radial FG power indices, porosity parameter, and nonlocal gradient strain parameters, on the buckling behavior of the bi-dimensional functionally graded porous tube. Keywords: Nonlocal strain gradient theory; buckling; Zhang-Fu's tube model; Timoshenko theory; Two-dimensional functionally graded materials; Nanotubes; Higher-order theory.

  • The free and forced nonlinear dynamic behaviors of Porous Functionally Graded Material (PFGM) plates are examined by means of a High-Order Implicit Algorithm (HOIA). The formulation is developed using the Third-order Shear Deformation Theory (TSDT). Unlike previous works, the formulation is written without resorting to any homogenization technique neither rule of mixture nor considering FGM as a laminated composite, and the distribution of the porosity is assumed to be gradually variable through the thickness of the PFGM plates. Using the Hamilton principle, we establish the governing equations of motion. The Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to compute approximations of the resulting equations; FEM is adopted using a four-node quadrilateral finite element with seven Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) per node. Nonlinear equations are solved by a HOIA. The accuracy and the performance of the proposed approach are verified by presenting comparisons with literature results for vibration natural frequencies and dynamic response of PFGM plates under external loading. The influences of porosity volume fraction, porosity distribution, slenderness ratio and other parameters on the vibrations of PFGM plate are explored. The results demonstrate the significant impact of different physical and geometrical parameters on the vibration behavior of the PFGM plate.

  • The dynamic responses and drift forces in waves of a floating circular fish cage are analyzed considering hydroelastic effects. The method of generalized mode is used to calculate the hydroelastic responses of the floater of cage. The elastic mode shapes, generalized mass, and stiffness in dry mode are evaluated by using a structural analysis code. The higher-order boundary element method is adopted to analyze the interaction between fluid and deformable structure. Some results of vertical motions and drift forces are shown and compared with those for a rigid body.

  • In this paper a recently developed scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is applied to simulate stress concentration for two-dimensional structures. In addition, a simple and independent formulation for evaluating the coefficients, not only of the singular term but also higher order non-singular terms, of the stress fields near crack-tip is presented. The formulation is formed by comparing the displacement along the radial points ahead of the crack-tip with that of standard Williams' eigenfunction solution for the crack-tip. The validity of the formulation is examined by numerical examples with different geometries for a range of crack sizes. The results show good agreement with available solutions in literatures. Based on the results of the study, it is conformed that the proposed numerical method can be applied to simulate stress concentrations in both cracked and uncracked structure components more easily with relatively coarse and simple model than other computational methods.

  • Considering inverse cotangential shear strain function, the present paper studies nonlinear stability of nonlocal higher-order refined beams made of metal foams based on Chebyshev-Ritz method. Based on inverse cotangential beam model, it is feasible to incorporate shear deformations needless of shear correction factor. Metal foam is supposed to contain different distributions of pores across the beam thickness. Also, presented Chebyshev-Ritz method can provide a unified solution for considering various boundary conditions based on simply-supported and clamped edges. Nonlinear effects have been included based upon von-karman's assumption and nonlinear elastic foundation. The buckling curves are shown to be affected by pore distribution, geometric imperfection of the beam, nonlocal scale factor, foundation and geometrical factors.

  • Springing and whipping are becoming increasingly important considerations in ship design as container ships increase in size. In this study, the springing and whipping characteristics of a large container ship were investigated through a series of systematic model tests in waves. A multi-segmented hull model with a backbone was adopted for measurement of springing and whipping signals. A conversion method for extracting torsion springing and whipping is described in this paper for the case of an open-section backbone. Higher-order springing, higher-mode torsion responses, and the effects of linear and nonlinear springing in irregular waves are highlighted in the discussion.
