  • The purpose of this study was to change the '과gwa (academic department)' operated by the college to the '학과haggwa (academic department).' Although they are in a lower order in the legal system, "the Regulations for the Establishment and Operation of University and College" and "the Public Notice on the Establishment of a 3-year Course at College" use '학과haggwa' regardless of the type of school. On the other hand, "the Higher Education Act and the Enforcement Decree of the Higher Education Act" use '과gwa' for colleges. The department name can be changed from '과gwa' to '학과haggwa' through a revision of school regulations in promoting the establishment of a major and the operation of the curriculum. In this study, it is considered reasonable to operate the name of '학과haggwa' in an associate degree course or higher.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore tools for systemic and integrated teaching analysis in recognition of problems derived from the existing teaching analysis which have been held fragmentarily and temporarily. In order to do so, a teaching analysis tools is identified by examining the current services of video-taping and analysis, which are the most representative teaching analysis methods among the Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs) in Korea, and by redefining teaching analysis through literature review. A teaching analysis is to be done to challenge teachers to change and grow by providing a motive to reflect on the act of teaching and carry out improvements, and it has to be held covering the general act of teaching and examined through diverse methods in systemic and multidimensional perspectives over a full period of teaching. In this study, an act of teaching is examined in four areas: planning, teaching skill, evaluation and reflection, and teaching analysis frameworks according to an act of teaching are suggested by periods of before, during, and after a term. Teaching analysis methods are also suggested by the frameworks.

  • In 2004 Daejeon University established a department of military studies by an agreement with the Korea Army. And more than three universities brought up the rear. This means that military studies is authorized as one of university majors by the Higher Education Act. The department enables students not only to graduate with a degree of Military Studies but also to receive officer’s commission in the Korea Army. All students incur seven-year military services by receiving four-year scholarships from the Army. The graduates start out as Second Lieutenants and become eligible for promotion. This article deals with (i) how the major came to be offered; (ii) details of the curricula of some universities; (iii) two perspectives on the curriculum of Military Studies (One is education for a good man, the other for a good warrior); finally (iv) the issues under debate as Military Studies is authorized as a science, and the problems awaiting solution.

  • This study was designed and undertaken to analyse the factors associated with sexual satisfaction in diabetic patients. The data were collected from September to November, 1997. The subjects in this study were 77 diabetic patients who visited to check their blood glucose level to the outpatient department of internal medicine in one of hospitals located in Taejon city, The questionnaires developed by Derogatis L. R. were used. Data were analysed using percentages, means, 1-test, ANOVA and Peason-correlation coefficients, done with the SAS program. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. The mean score of sexual satisfaction in diabetic patients was higher than the mid level as 3.14 points in the 5 points scale and male patients' score was a little higher than female's. 2. The mean score of factors associated with sexual life was 3.54 points in spouses' support, 3.44 points in sexual attitude and 2.60 points in body image in the 5 points scale, and 2.76 points in the sexual act in the 6 points scale. The score of above all factors were higher in male patients than female patients. 3. The significant factors associated with sexual satisfaction were spouses' support, body image and sexual act. That is, the higher spouses' support, the more positive body image and the more frequent sexual act, the higher patients' sexual satisfaction. 4. In the relationships between the sexual satisfaction and the general characteristics of the diabetic patients, only religion and the period of disease were statistically significant differents, but the relationships between the sexual satisfaction and the period of disease showed a significant inverse correlation. This results showed that the degree of sexual satisfaction in diabetic patients was relatively high. The major factors associated with sexual satisfaction were spouses' support, body image and sexual act, religion and the period of disease. So, the above factors have to be considered during the nursing intervention on diabetic patients' sexual life.

  • We isolated and functionally characterized a Dendrobium Actin1 (DmACT1) promoter that drives strong gene expression in the orchid genus Dendrobium. A genomic fragment containing the region 3227 bp upstream of the coding region of DmACT1 was obtained by inverse PCR. Detailed comparison of the full-length cDNA and genomic sequences revealed that DmACT1 has a 1374 bp first intron in the 5' UTR. However, the 5' flanking sequences upstream of the coding region showed no obvious sequence similarities compared to those of known promoters, including plant actin promoters. Serial deletion constructs of the 5' flanking region from the translation initiation codon were fused to the coding sequence of a GUS/luciferase fusion reporter to identify the regulatory elements necessary for promoter activity. Transient assays in the flowers of Dendrobium revealed that the 5' UTR-intron greatly enhanced promoter activity. Moreover, the DmACT1 promoter with its 5' UTR-intron yielded approximately 10-fold higher reporter activity than the rice Act1 promoter-intron. Our data suggest that the DmACT1 promoter with its 5' UTR-intron is a useful tool for strong expression of transgenes in Dendrobium orchids.

  • Recently several hospitals have established a new nursing position so called, 'the nurse in charge of education (NCE).' The job description of NCE is to give a detail explanation on examination or test introduced to patients or a guide for those who are not familiar to hospital facilities at the out-patients level. The motivation of NCE position is the quality improvement in patient education on the sophisticated procedures or the follow up care for medical purposes to improve their compliances, as well in delivering services for outpatients or visitors in more informative and efficient way. The application of NCEA has been turned out positive and effective in patient satisfaction and unit management. However, special attention is brought to the scope and depth of the contents of education delivered by NCE which might overlap with the duty of physicians by the Medical Act. It is needed to clarify the role and job description of NCE in the context of Medical Act. The engagement of NCE to the Advanced Nursing Practitioner (ANP) is one of the possible solutions for a duty charge on patient education since ANP is a legislatively official position with higher license of RN at master level. Further discussion is needed to elaborate and arrange the details on the scope and content of patent education among health science professionals including RN, ANP and physicians.
