  • In many combustion systems, swirling combustion air is extensively applied as an aid for stabilization of high intensity combustion pocesses. Swirl, generally, causes significant effects on the flow field which, in turn, determines the size, shape, and stability of flames, and combustion intensity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of swirls on flames produced from a model combustor designed in this paper. In order to impart swirls to the combustion air, a movable block swirl generator was used. Temperature distribution and radiative heat flux along the centerline of the swirling flame were measured. Data obtained from these swirl flows can be used as design data for high intensity or high efficiency combustion systems. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Flame temperature profiles were measured at various swirl number. 2. The axial distance for maximum temperature from the centerline of burner increased as the swirl number increased. 3. Radiative heat flux increased as the swirl number and axial distance from burner increased.

  • By using a gas-tight electrochemical cell, we can perform high-temperature coulometric titration and measure electronic transport properties to determine the elecronic defect structure of metal oxides. This technique reduces the time and expense required for conventional thermogravimetric measurements. The components of the gas-tight coulometric titration cell are an oxygen sensor, Pt/yttria stabilitized zirconia(YSZ)/Pt, and an encapsulated metal oxide sample. Based on cell design, both transport and thermodynamic measurements can be performed over a wide range of oxygen partial pressure ($pO_2=10^{-35}$ to 1 atm). This paper describes the high-temperature gas-tight electrochemical cells used to determine electronic defect structures and transport properties for pure and doped-oxide systems, such as YSZ, doped and pure ceria $(Ca-CeO_2 \;and\; CeO_2)$, copper oxides and copper-oxide-based ceramic superconductors, transition metal oxides, $SrFeCo_{0.5}O_x,\; and \;BaTiO_2$.

  • A reliable assessment and analysis of the condition of high pressure and temperature steam pipelines requires defining stress state, which will take into consideration not just the impact of internal pressure and temperature but all applied loads. For that, usage of modeling and numerical methods for calculation and analysis of stress state is essential. The main aim of piping stress analysis is to check the design of piping layout, which will allow simple, efficient and economical piping supports and provide flexibility to the piping system for loads and stresses. The piping stress analysis is carried out using CAESER II software. By using this software we can evaluate stresses, stress ratios, flange condition, support loads, element forces and displacements at each node and points. In this paper, only the maximum and minimum displacement results are tabulated, which is also shown in detail by an example of main steam pipelines of UST Main Engine System [1].

  • The flameless combustion has been considered as one of the promising combustion technology for high thermal efficiency, reducing NOx and CO emissions. In this paper, the effect of air and fuel injection condition on formation of flameless combustion was analyzed using three dimensional numerical simulation. The results show that the high temperature region and the average temperature was decreased due to increase of recirculation ratio when air velocity is increased. The average temperature was also affected by entrainment length. Generally mixing effect was enhanced at low entrainment length and dilution was dominated at high entrainment length. This entrainment length was greatly affected by air and fuel injection velocity and distance between air and fuel. It is also found that the recirculation ratio and dilution effect were generally increased by entrainment length and the recirculation ratio, mixing and dilution effect are the significant factor for design of flameless combustion system.

  • When a KW-class power control unit is installed in an aircraft installation, a heat dissipation design for a large amount of heat generated during power conversion should be considered. Failure to provide adequate heat dissipation can lead to equipment malfunction and fire, which can be a fatal factor in aviation operations. This paper describes the heat dissipation design of a KW-class power control unit installed in aircraft installation. The design and manufacturing test were conducted through computerized analysis, and the analysis model was corrected by confirming the rapid heat generation phenomenon of the heating element due to high power control. After the model revision, the design was improved, and the high-temperature operation test of the US military standard MIL-STD-810G was performed to confirm the feasibility of the improved design.

  • Thyristor devices have 3-dimensional complicated structure and were sensitive to temperature characteristics. Therefore, it was difficult to optimize thyristor devices design. We have to consider many design parameter to characterize, and trade-off relations. The important parameters to design thyristor devices are cathode structure, effective line width, cathode-emitter shunt structure, gate structure, doping profile and carrier lifetime. So, we must consider that these design parameters were not acted separately. However, there are many difficulties to determine optimized design parameters by experiment. So, We used specific design software to design thyristor devices, and estimated the thyristor devices characteristics.

  • Domestic power plants have consistently been developed over the years in industrially developed nations with high standards of living. Considering the power plant development strategy, design efficiency is of upmost importance. Therefore, an improper design directly affects the power plant's risk management plan and the potential risks of the piping system. Therefore, in this study, research is intended to be carried out to allow efficient power plant operation, through optimization of the design of the piping system. The purpose of the study is to confirm economic feasibility by changing the piping loop design, expanding the length of pipe loops, and to investigate the thermal stress influence on the piping system through simulations of systems similar in condition to those currently used in existing plants in Korea.

  • In this study, a series of conjugate heat transfer (CHT) analyses are conducted for a stage of a fully cooled high-pressure turbine (HPT) at elevated levels of free stream turbulence (Tu = 5% and 25.7%). The goal of the analyses is to investigate the influence of high turbulence intensity on the fluid-thermal characteristics of a nozzle guide vane (NGV). The turbine inlet temperature is defined by considering a typical radial temperature distribution factor (RTDF). The Unsteady Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (URANS) CHT simulations are carried out using CFX 15.0, a commercial CFD package. The presented CFD modeling approach for high turbulence intensity is verified with the experimental data from two types of NASA C3X NGVs with films. The computation grid is generated for both the fluid and solid domains. The fluid domain grid is created using a tetrahedral grid system with prism layers because of its complex geometry, and the solid domain grid is composed of only tetrahedral elements. The analytical results are compared to understand the effect of turbulence on flow characteristics and metal temperature distributions. The results obtained in this study provide useful insights on the effects of high free stream turbulence and unsteadiness. The results also lead to the proposal of meaningful turbine design guidelines.

  • Hybrid Electric Vehicle(HEV) is driven by an internal-combustion engine and an electric motor. It is a combination of an internal-combustion engine and several electrical equipments which use a high voltage battery, an electric motors, an inverter and others. But there is not any separate detailed enforcement regulations for high voltage electric appliances in the existing vehicle-related safety standards. So, test standards suggestion as well as test technique development need to be done for ensuring electrical safety, for an electric motor, a high voltage battery, a(n) inverter/converter and an electric power transmission units and other equipments to ensure the safety of high voltage electric appliances which is the HEV key electrical component. In this paper, We are to provide helpful data to support test technique development and test standard establishment for HEV design and electrical safety security by the following methods; by measuring the voltage, the electric current, and the frequency of HEV, by analyzing electrical characteristics of high voltage electric appliances, and by analyzing temperature characteristics of the electrical current among the analyzed electrical characteristics by thermal imagining cameras.
