  • This study adopted the ultra precision machining system which was composed of an air bearing spindle, a granite bed, air pad and a linear feeding mechanism. It also applied the cutting experiment on the aluminum alloy. To evaluate the safety of high speed machining, we examined the surface roughness according to the changes of cutting speed and obtained the speed limit. This paper also studied the effect of cutting condition such as feed rates and depths of cut on the surface roughness within the speed limit. This provided practical information regarding ultra precision machining.

  • The new trends in main spindle design of Machining Center are focused on high-speed, high-precision and high-stiffness. As a main spindle bearing, the angular-contact ball bearing is well used. A rolling bearing is usually only a small part of a larger mechanical system, but its performance can have a great influence on the functioning of the whole machine. This work is about fatigue life tester design and monitoring of defected rolling-element bearings. The major work is done via experiments and the vibration signal is analysised by means of frequency spectrum technique. By analyzing the frequency spectrum, it is possible to view the condition of the bearings.

  • In order to improve the international competitiveness of ferrule industry, the core technology of the second stage for ferrule grinding system is under developing. A high speed (10,000RPM) and high precision spindle system(Radial Runout 0.2 micrometer) bearing more cutting torque and force is designed considering the limitation of cost and size, the effect of heat, and various work-piece materials. A CAE software for machine elements and general machine system is used for preliminary evaluation and selection of design parameters. A dedicated program for the analysis of spindle system is used for final evaluation and selection of design parameter. The process how to evaluate and select using such tools are presented.

  • 주축은 공작기계의 핵심요소로서 주축의 정 동적 특성은 공작물의 가공정밀도에 직접적으로 영향을 미친다. 주축의 특성은 축 크기, 베어링 간격, 내장모터의 위치 등에 의해 결정된다. 그러므로 축 크기, 베어링 간격, 모터위치의 선정은 주축 특성을 개선하는데 중요한 요소라 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 40,000rpm 고속주축의 정 동적 해석과 최적 설계에 관한 연구로, 유한요소해석과 최적화를 위한 통계분석을 하였다. 이를 위하여 반응표면법을 사용하여 목적함수와 설계변수를 최적화하였다. 최적화 대상은 주축의 고유진동수의 최대화와 변위의 최소화이다. 설계변수는 축길이, 축직경, 베어링 간격, 모터위치로 선정했다. 최적설계를 통해 도출된 설계안으로 초기모델보다 개선된 결과를 얻을 수 있었고, 본 연구의 결과를 주축 설계에 적용하면 주축의 정 동적 특성 개선에 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.

공작기계용 볼 베어링의 억지끼워맞춤과 내부틈새변화에 관한 해석적 연구 (FE-analysis of Shrink Fits and Internal Clearance for Ball Bearing of Machine Tool)

  • The bearing clearance is influenced by shrink fit and thermal expansion during operation. The designer must take into account the reduction of clearance after installation to the interference fits, and thermal expansion must be considered. The purpose of this study is to grasp the internal clearance variation and behavior of a bearing which is a deep connected with fatigue life of bearing and performance of spindle through FEM(Finite Element Method). Finite element analysis is performed by using commercial code ANSYS according to variation of thermal condition and rotational speeds. This paper presents correct negative internal clearance according to temperature during operation. Furthermore, interrelation between thermal expansion and contraction are presented to maintain adequate contact force for three type of spindle system (HSK-A60, HSK-40E, HSK-32E). The influence of the centrifugal force and Internal clearance variation of bearing is studied to operating rotational speed.

베어링 강성 측정 (The Measurement of the Bearing Stiffness)

  • This paper is presented for the measurement of the bearing stiffness for the spindle motors. BLDC Spindle Motors for the Hard Disk Drive are used by several kinds of the bearings, such as ball bearing, fluid dynamic bearing, and aero dynamic bearing. The spindle motors are attached the platters to read and write the data. Because the platter rotates at high end speed with the load and can be shocked from a suddenly moving, the bearing needs the rated stiffness with the pressure. By the way, it has not been realized to measure the real stiffness for each bearing types. In this paper, we proposed the method of measuring the stiffness for the bearings by using the magnet force. Experimental results show the performance to measure the bearing stiffness of the BLDC spindle motors for an HDD.

Thermal Model of High-Speed Spindle Units

  • For the purpose to facilitate development of high-speed spindle units (SUs) running on rolling bearings, we have developed a beam element model, algorithms, and software for computer analysis of thermal characteristics of SUs. The thermal model incorporates a model of heat generation in rolling bearings, a model of heat transfer from bearings, and models for estimation of temperature and temperature deformations of SU elements. We have carried out experimental test and made quantitative evaluation of the effect of operation conditions on friction and thermal characteristics of the SUs of grinding and turning machines of typical structures. It is found out that the operation conditions make stronger effect on SU temperatures when rpm increases. A comparison between the results of analysis and experiment proves their good mutual correspondence and allows us to recommend application of the models and software developed for design and research of high-speed SUs running on rolling bearings.

고속 스핀들의 동적거동과 밸런싱 해석 (Analysis of Dynamic Behavior and Balancing of High Speed Spindle)

  • 공작기계 응용에 있어서 고속 및 고효율 가공의 추세는 스핀들의 고속화를 지속적으로 요구하고 있다. 내장형 모터를 장착한 스핀들은 가공시스템의 구조를 단순하게 한다. 하지만 로터에는 불평형 질량에 의해 진동이 발생하며, 이를 제거하기 위한 밸런싱 작업은 필수적이다. 이 논문에서는 내장형 모터를 장착한 고속 스핀들의 동적거동을 해석하였다. 불평형 질량, 베어링 강성, 회전 속도의 변화에 따른 휘돌림 궤적을 해석하였고, 이를 저감시키는 방법을 모색하였다. 또한 Timoshenko 빔 요소를 적용하여 스핀들-베어링 시스템을 모델링하고, 영향 계수법을 적용하여 밸런싱 과정을 시뮬레이션 하였다. 스핀들의 경우, 불평형 하중이 작용할 때, 베어링 지지점에서 가장 작은 휘돌림 궤적이 나타났으며, 양단에서 가장 큰 휘돌림 궤적을 나타내었다. 스핀들의 회전속도가 증가함에 따라 스핀들 선단에서의 휘돌림 궤적도 증가하였다. 베어링의 강성이 커짐에 따라 휘돌림 궤적 또한 증가하였다. 밸런싱 전, 후의 휘돌림 궤적 반경은 최대 73%까지 감소함을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 CNC 자동선반의 스핀들 고속화에 중요한 정보를 제공하고 있다.

유체동압베어링의 그르브 성능에 관한 연구 (Study on the Performance of the Grooves for Fluid Dynamic Bearings)

  • This paper is presented for the performance of the Fluid Dynamic Bearing(FDB) by the groove design and the tooling condition. Recently, spindle motors which require smaller size, lower sound noise, lower vibration, and higher speed of the rotation have been placed in high value-added products including Digital Lightening Processors(DLP), Hard Disk Drives(HDD), and ODDs. The spindle motors using the sintered porous metal bearing have higher vibration and acoustic noise by dry contact and large tolerance of the bearing parts. The Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) with grooves is appropriate for spindle motors adequate in regards to mechanical vibration and acoustic noise. The paper shows the performance comparisons of between sintered porous metal bearing and FDB, and each FDBs according to the tooling deviations of grooves by the Finite Element Analysis(FEA) of the mechanical field. This paper shows the methods to make the grooves, the groove's depth, and the prototype of the motor with the fluid dynamic bearing. The performance characteristics of the grooves with the FDB are verified by the experimental results.

  • Thermal characteristics according to the bearing preload arc studied for the four type spindles with high frequency motor. For the analysis. three dimensional models are built considering heat transfer characteristics such as natural and forced convection coefficients, Bearing and motor are main heat generation, and heat generation by ball bearings as a function of load. viscosity and gyroscopic moment effect are considered. Unsteady-state temperature distributions and thermal displacements according to the bearing preload are analyzed by using the finite clement method.
