In case of fire in the high-rise buildings, the appropriate and safe evacuation plans for the building residents are very important to minimize the number of casualties. Since the evacuation time usually depends on the floor plans of the buildings, the evacuation plans should be considered while the architectural design is done. Conventionally, the calculation of the evacuation time in the case of fire breakout is based on the approximate mathematical equations which are prone to error. In this study, the simulator model is developed to help the architectural designers to access the more accurate evacuation time and find out the floor plans which offers the most safe evacuation plans for the residents in case of fire.
Solar sunlighting systems are useful to apply for most buildings. This study aims to analysis the development and architectural application of solar sunlighting systems. For the purpose, abroad developing situation of solar sunlighting systems were investigated and analyzed literally. And, by case studies, architectural application methods are analyzed. As results, light pipe systems are mainly used for small building and houses. Also solar mirror systems are used for atrium and underground spaces. Lens-fiber systems are applied for high rise buildings and office buildings which internally have no influx of sunlighting. Some application suggestion in our country are discussed.
Recently, as the height of building is getting higher, the applications of CFST column for high-rise buildings have been increased. In structural system of high-rise building, The RC core and exterior concrete-filled tubular (CFST) column-beam pinned connection is one of the structural systems that support lateral load. If this structural system is used, due to the minimal CFST column thickness compared to that of the CFST column width, the local moment occurred by the eccentric distance between the column flange surface from shear bolts joints degrades the shear strength of the CFST column-beam pinned connections. This study performed a finite element analysis to investigate the shear strength under eccentric moment of the CFST column-beam pinned connections. The column's width and thickness were used as variables for the analysis. To guarantee the reliability of the finite element analysis, an actual-size specimens were fabricated and tested. The yield line theory was used to formulate an shear strength formula for the CFT column-beam pinned connection. the shear strength formula was suggested through comparison on the results of FEM analysis, test and yield lime theory, the shear strength formula was suggested.
Designed by star architect of Moshes Safdie, Raffles City Chongqing includes a total of 6 mega high-rise towers 250 to 380 m tall, a sky conservatory, a 5-storey high shopping mall and a 3-storey basement car parking. Located at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jailing Rivers, the site for the project is imbued with a significance that is immediately symbolic, both as a sign of Chongqing's important past and as a vivid indicator of the city's thriving present and future. The design for the project to be situated at this gateway takes as its governing idea the image of powerful sails upon the water. The outer facades of the project's eight towers - the transparent surfaces that will face the water to the north - are meant to recall a fleet of ancient Chinese ships, with their huge rectangles of white canvas filled by the wind. This is a $1.13million\;m^2$ mega scale integrated project of office, retail, hotel, service residence and high-end residence with the transportation hub and traffic circulation at various levels of the project. This paper presents the multi-dimensional hybrid design, engineering and construction of this mega scale project. The innovations and the cutting-edge technology used in this project are introduced and discussed benchmarking the design and construction of the skyscraper cluster in a major city like Chongqing of China.
A occupant load density of contemporary office buildings were surveyed by a building w walk through procedure in Korea. The survey results of ten office buildings are range from 1 2 2 2 213.14 m !person 041.4 ft !person) to 22.69 m /person (244.34 ft !person) with 95% confidence l level and the mean occupant load density is 17.92 m2/person 092.87 ft2/야rson). The impacts of occupant load on evacuation flow time was analyzed by applying time-based egress m model, SIMULEX with various occupant load densities from previous studies. I In order to demonstrate the validation of egress modeling method, fire evacuation exercise a and computer simulation were used to simulate the actual evacuation plan for a high-rise office building. An analysis and comparison of the results of these approaches was made to i illustrate the influence of model limitations on the result of prediction The result of the study shows that the introduction of occupant load concept in building c code of Korea is essential to achieving resonable building life safety design in future.
Tall buildings are frequently decried as unsustainable due to their excessive energy usage. Early skyscrapers used natural light and ventilation to facilitate human comfort and applied organic materials such as stone, glass, wood, concrete, and terra cotta for cladding and finishes. With the advent of fluorescent lighting, modern heating, ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, and thermally sealed curtain walls, tall office buildings no longer had to rely on natural light and ventilation to provide comfort. Energy efficiency was not a significant factor when the operational costs of buildings were relatively inexpensive. However, today's skyscrapers must become more energy-efficient and sustainable due to energy crises and climate change. This paper highlights vital energy-efficient design principles and demonstrates with illustrative case studies how they are applied to tall buildings in various parts of the world. It shows how sustainable environmental systems do not act alone but are integrated with advanced curtain wall systems, sky gardens, and atria, among others, to regulate and sustain thermal comfort and conserve energy.
This paper describes the structural solution for the design of a 29-story high-rise tower, which features a large office space above the Kabukiza Theatre. Kabuki is a type of Japanese traditional drama, and Kabukiza is the home building of Kabuki. GINZA KABUKIZA is the fifth generation of the Kabukiza Theatre, the first of which was built in 1889. In order to support 23 stories of office space above the theater - featuring a large void in plan - two 13-meter-deep mega-trusses, spanning 38.4 meters, are installed at the fifth floor of the building. Steelwork is used as a primary material for the structure above-ground, and a hybrid response control system using a buckling-restrained brace and oil damper is adopted in order to achieve a high seismic performance. This paper also describes the erection process of installing hydraulic jacks directly above the mega-truss at column bases, in order to keep the structure above the truss level during construction. The temple architecture of the previous Kabukiza is carefully restored by incorporating contemporary light-weight materials supported by steelwork.
Employers are realizing that workplaces have an immense impact on productivity. And, because people typically represent about 90% of a company's costs, even a slight improvement in productivity hits the bottom-line in a very big way. The focus is shifting away from saving money by reducing space needs or cutting energy requirements, and moving toward making the workplace friendlier and healthier. What is a healthy workplace, exactly? The answer should be clear by now. Mountains of research have expounded on this very topic, and then news outlets cover the latest discoveres ad infinitum. The problem is, research is rather dense, while the news isn't comprehensive. Office managers trying to improve workplace wellness want neither a 55-page report nor a half dozen articles to convince their landlord that their space can do better. Recognizing this gap, Harvard researchers have released a concise-yet-complete list of healthy building features. Here, we're sharing these nine features with a few insights of our own on the value of being healthy and productive. Find out: ${\bullet}$ What makes a healthy building and why is it so important ${\bullet}$ How to improve the health of your own office ${\bullet}$ What happens for your people and your bottom line when you make health a priority.
In this study, the fire resistance performance of the concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns and thin steel-plate composite (TSC) beams installed at a 20-story office building were designed using a performance-based structural fire design. Because of the lack of any specific provisions in the building code and guidelines for structural engineers about the performance-based approach, the only prescriptive approach has been selected for designing fire-resistant structures in Korea. To evaluate the fire resistance performance of the CFT columns and TSC beams, finite element analysis verified by the experimental results studied by several researchers was conducted with ABAQUS. From the fire scenario, the temperature distributions of the CFT columns and TSC beams were found via finite element analysis and the behaviors of the CFT columns and TSC beams were investigated in the structural field based on the temperature distribution.
Diagrid system has been in the spotlight for its superiority in terms of the resistance to lateral force when applied to skyscrapers. In diagrid system, most of columns can be eliminated because vertical loads (gravity loads) and horizontal loads (lateral loads) are delivered simultaneously thanks to the triangular shape of diagrid. However, lack of studies on connection shape and node connection details makes it hard to employ the system to the buildings. In this study, the structural safety of the node connections in circular steel tube diagrid system which has been considered in the Cyclone Tower in Korea (Seven stories below and fifty-one above the ground) was evaluated using the 4 full-scale specimens. The parameters are the extended length (20 mm, 40 mm & 60 mm), thickness (40 mm & 50 mm).
