  • In a liquid-fueled ramjet engine, the insufficient mixing and evaporation result in the low combustion efficiency and combustion instability. Improving its characteristics and devising a means of fuel droplets with air may compensate these disadvantages of liquid fuel ramjet engine. The jet penetrations of various fuel injectors were measured to investigate the spray characteristics of a liquid-fueled ramjet engine under high pressure air-stream conditions. The penetrations in high pressure conditions are smaller than the values calculated from Inamura's or Lee's equations, and the jet penetrations in the high pressure conditions have a similar tendency. In the dual orifice injectors, the jet penetrations of rare orifice is rapidly increased due to the reduction of the drag, which is created by the jet column of front orifice. The jet penetration of rare orifice is increased because of the drag reduction created by the jet column of the front orifice. Because of the drag reduction formed by the column of jet, the jet penetration in the rear orifice of dual orifice injector is much larger than the jet penetrations of single orifice injector. As the distances of the orifice are increased, the jet penetrations of the rear orifice decrease.

  • Soil washing techniques coupled with high pressure air jet were applied for diesel-contaminated soils sampled by an underground oil reservoir of which the initial total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) ($2,828{\pm}206\;mg/kg$) exceeded 5 times of current standard level (500 mg/kg) regulated by the Soil-Environment Conservation Law. Through several tests, we found that the position of impeller has a critical impact for washing efficiencies. The highest washing efficiency was obtained at an oblique angle (30 degree) for the impeller and optimized mixing speed (300 rpm) that could have high shearing forces. Considered economical and feasible aspects, the optimum mixing time was 10 min. Rate constants of TPH removal derived from the first-order equation were not linearly increased as mixing speed increased, indicating that mechanical mixing has some limits to enhance the washing efficiencies. Application of high-pressure air jet in washing process increased the washing efficiency. This increase might be caused by the fact that the surface of micro-air bubbles strongly attached hydrophobic matters of soil particles. As the pressure of air jet increased, the separation efficiencies of TPH-contaminated soil particles increased. In the combined process of high-pressure air jet and mixing by impeller, the optimum mixing speed and air flow-rate were determined to be 60 rpm and $2\;kg/cm^2$, respectively. Consequently, the washing technique coupled with high-pressure air jet could be considered as a feasible application for remediating petroleum-contaminated soils.

  • In the present study, capability of improving the liquid atomization of a high-speed liquid jet by using wall impingement is explored, and its application to a jet engine atomize. is demonstrated. Water is injected from a thin nozzle. The liquid jet impinges on a wall positioned close to the nozzle exit, forming a liquid film. The liquid film velocity and the SMD were measured with PDA and LDSA, respectively. It was shown that the SMD of the droplets was determined by the liquid film velocity and impingement angle, regardless of the injection pressure or impingement wall diameter. When the liquid film velocity was smaller than 300m/s, a smaller SMD was obtained, compared with a simple free jet. This wall impingement technique was applied to a conventional air-blasting nozzle for jet engines. A real-size air-blasting burner was installed in a test rig in which three thin holes were made to accommodate liquid injection toward the intermediate ring, as an impingement wall. The air velocity was varied from 41 to 92m/s, and the liquid injection pressure was varied from 0.5 to 7.5 MPa. Combining wall impinging pressure atomization with gas-blasting produces remarkable improvement in atomization, which is contributed by the droplets produced in the pressure atomization mode. Comparison with the previous formulation for conventional gas-blasting atomization is also made, and the effectiveness of utilizing pressure atomization with wall impingement is shown.

  • One of the recent changes in machining technology is rapid application of micro- and high precision grinding processes. A fine groove generation is necessary for the fabrication of optic, electronic and semiconductor parts, and achieved by chemical or mechanical processes. Slot grinding is very efficient for the generation of micro ordered groove with hard and brittle materials. As slot grinding is continuous, the ground depth become gradually shallow because of wheel wear. The form accuracy become worse from the increase of ground slot width by the loading phenomena at wheel side, results on chipping damage of the workpiece. The experiments achieve to the enhancement of the form accuracy and chipping free of the brittle materials using V shaped cast iron bonded diamond wheels. In this study we focused on the investigation of the effect of the high pressure air jet on the grinding characteristics. As a results, we found that the high pressure air jet is very effective on the reductions of the wheel wear, enhancement of the form accuracy.

  • Sealing an oil-air mixture plays important roles to have an enhanced lubrication for high speed spindle. High speed spindle requires non-contact type of sealing mechanism. Current work emphases on the investigation of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve the sealing capability of conventional labyrinth seal, air jet was injected against through the leakage flow, It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. Both of a numerical analysis by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement The sealing effects of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude are studied in various parameters. The results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient Effect of sealing improvement is explained as decreasing of leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger.

  • A fundamental experimental study for an alternative proposal to super-speed craft propulsion system called underwater ram-jet propulsion by high pressure air ejection as driving force was investigated. For basic study of the effects of ram-jet propulsion performance, a simple underwater ram-jet flow field was established and PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method was adopted to analyse the jet-induced flow appearing at ram intake, mixing chamber and nozzle. Some flow dynamics relating to the high-speed ram-jet effect were discussed for the basic understanding of the its propulsion principle.

  • Ceramic filter has been demonstrated as an attractive system to improve the thermal efficiency and to reduce the effluent pollutants. Removal of particulates from the hot gas stream is very important in air pollution control. In particular, the elimination of the particulate matters discharged from a gas turbine at high temperature can prevent the corrosion inside the IGCC. In this study, a Lab. scale test and numerical simulation were carried out to comprehend the relationship between pulse jet pressure and recovery of pressure drop and to characterize the reverse cleaning flow through a ceramic fil-ter element under high temperature and high pressure. When the pulse-jet pressures were 2, 3 and 4 kg/$ extrm{cm}^2$, the cleaning effect increase of about 10~30% by recovery of pressure drop caused by pulse pressure. Cleaning effect at 45$0^{\circ}C$ was greater than that at 55$0^{\circ}C$ or 650$^{\circ}$ for the same pulse pressure. According to the result of the present simulation, high pressure has been formed in terminal and central regions in our models and temperature distribution caused by pulse air is to be uniform comparatively on inner surface of filter.

  • Various jet engines (Turbine engine family and RAM Jet engine) have been developed for high speed aircrafts. but their application to hypersonic flight is restricted by principle problems such as increase of total pressure loss and thermal stress. Therefore, the development of next generation propulsion system for hypersonic aircraft is a very important subject in the aerospace engineering field, SCRAM Jet engine based on a key technology, Supersonic Combustion. is supposed as the best choice for the hypersonic flight. Since Supersonic Combustion requires both rapid ignition and stable flame holding within supersonic air stream, much attention have to be given on the mixing state between air stream and fuel flow. However. the wider diffusion of fuel is expected with less total pressure loss in the supersonic air stream. So. in this study the direction of fuel injection is inclined 30 degree to downstream and the total pressure of jet is controlled for lower penetration height than thickness of boundary layer. Under these flow configuration both streams, fuel and supersonic air stream, would not mix enough. To spread fuel wider into supersonic air an aerodynamic force, baroclinic torque, is adopted. Baroclinic torque is generated by a spatial misalignment between pressure gradient (shock wave plane) and density gradient (mixing layer). A wedge is installed in downstream of injector orifice to induce an oblique shock. The schlieren optical visualization from side transparent wall and the total pressure measurement at exit cross section of combustor estimate how mixing is enhanced by the incidence of shock wave into supersonic boundary layer composed by fuel and air. In this study non-combustionable helium gas is injected with total pressure 0.66㎫ instead of flammable fuel to clarify mixing process. Mach number 1.8. total pressure O.5㎫, total temperature 288K are set up for supersonic air stream.

  • Most water cannon machines use compressed gas to accelerate a piston which extrudes water through a cumulation nozzle. Very high jet stagnation-pressures can be achieved by using a specially-shaped nozzle which is initially filled with air or vacuum. The objective of this study was to establish the basic technology of water cannon using exponential type nozzle. An experimental water cannon including high pressure components such as exponential nozzle and 300atm air resrvior were designed and tested. Parameters that influence the performance of the system and jet characteristics were examined.
