  • We report on progress in developing high-power excimer lasers as well as UV-optics for creating low-temperature poly silicon (LTPS). A new high-power excimer laser offers 315 Watts with high pulse to pulse energy stability. Larger substrates can now be processed in better quality with either the SLS process or the new optics for line beam excimer laser annealing.

  • Now that the development of autonomous driving is progressing, LiDAR has become an indispensable element. However, LiDAR is a device that uses lasers, and laser side effects may occur. One of them is the much-talked-about eye-safety, and developers have been satisfying this through laser characteristics and operation methods. But eye-safety is just one of the problems lasers pose. For example, irradiating a laser with a specific energy level or higher in a dusty environment can cause deterioration of the dust particles, leading to a sudden explosion. For this reason, the dust ignition proof regulations clearly state that "a source with a pulse period of less than 5 seconds is considered a continuous light source, and the average energy does not exceed 5 mJ/mm 2 or 35 mW" [2]. Energy of output optical power is limited by the law. In this way, the manufacturer cannot define the usage environment of the LiDAR, and the development of a LiDAR that can be used in such an environment can increase the ripple effect in terms of use in application fields using the LiDAR. In this paper, we develop a LiDAR with low optical power that can be used in environments where high power lasers can cause problems, evaluate its performance. Also, we discuss and present one of the directions for the development of LiDAR with laser power limited by dust ignition proof regulations.

  • We have developed a compact and high-power mode-locked fiber laser for multilayered optical memory. Fiber lasers have the potential to be compact and stable light sources that can replace bulk solid-state lasers. To generate high-power pulses, we used stretched-pulse mode locking. The average power and pulse width of the output pulse from the fiber laser that we developed were 109 mW and 2.1 ps, respectively. The dispersion of the output pulse was compensated with an external single-mode fiber of 2.5 m length. The pulse was compressed from 2.1 ps to 93 fs by dispersion compensation. The fiber laser we have developed is possible to use as a light source of multilayered optical memory. We also present a fiber confocal microscope as an alignment-free readout system of multilayered optical memories. The fiber confocal microscope does not require fine pinhole position alignment because the fiber core is used as the point light source and the pinhole, and both of which are always located at the conjugated point. The configuration reduces the required accuracy of pinhole position alignment. With these techniques we can present an all-fiber recording and readout system for multilayered memories.

  • Laser-gas metal arc hybrid welding has been considered as an alternative process of gas metal arc welding for offshore pipe laying. Fiber delivered high power lasers which enable deep penetration welding were recently developed but high power welding characteristics were not fully understood yet. In this study, the influence of shielding gas composition on welding phenomena in high power laser welding was investigated. Bead shapes, melt ejection and dropping were observed after autogenous laser welding with 100% Ar, Ar-20% $CO_2$, Ar-50% $CO_2$, and 100% $CO_2$ shielding gas. Process parameter window was widest with Ar-50% $CO_2$ shielding gas and the penetration was deepest with 100% $CO_2$ shielding gas. The melt dropping was not observed when Ar-50% $CO_2$ or 100% $CO_2$ shielding gas was supplied.

  • We demonstrate self-starting passIve mode locking of a Cr:LiSAF laser, using a SCIDlconduclor Saturable Absorber Mirror (SESAM), Two high-power red semiconductor lasers (Coherent S-67-500C-100-H) of wavelength 667 nm and maximum power of 500 mW were used as pump lasers, The cavity has 10 cm radius-ai-curvature folding minors, two SF 10 prisms, a 99% reflectivity output coupler and a SESAM at dIe focus of a 10 cm radIus-at-curvature mirror. We used the laser crystal in BrewsterBrewster shape with 1 5% $Cr^{+3}$ ion concentration and the length of 6 mm, An X-shaped resonator was used to compensate the astigmatism induced by tile crystal. The structure of the SESAM cOllSists of 30 pmr of $AlAs/Al_{0.15}Ga_{0.85}As$ layer, wi1l1 a 10 nm GaAs quantum well situated in the topmost layer Output spectra were centeled at 833 nm, with 4 nm spectral bandwidth and pulse width was measured to be 220 fs, Output power of 3 mW is obtained at a pump power of 800 mW. 00 mW.

  • We have found that the polarization mode coupling between the orthogonally linearly polarized dual mode laser results from the anisotropy of dipole moments. Rate equation analysis demonstrated that high anisotropy in dipole moment components can give rise to law intrinsic mode coupling constants while isotropic dipole moment components give high intrinsic mode coupling constant. The populations at active ion sites are shown to self-organize the populations such that laser mode gain is constant adove threshold while the gain contributions from the each site adjust themselves with pump power.

  • In this paper a very brief review of historical development of optical science and technology in China is presented. More attention has been pain on Modem Optics, which developed since 1950s. The recent development of optical science and technology in following fields are introduced. 1. Optical engineering and instrumentation (tracking theodolites, high speed cameras, satellite laser ranging systems, satellite flying attitude control, cameras for remote sensing, astronomical optical instrument) 2. Applied optics (adaptive optics, optical metrology, infrared optics, optical processing, optical holography) 3. Laser science and technology (ultrashort pulse lasers, UV-X ray lasers, high power laser facilities and laser fusion, laser isotope separation) 4. Laser and nonlinear materials (rare earth elements doped laser glasses and crystals, tunable laser crystals, borate series and organic nonlinear crystals) 5. Optoelectronic science and technology (Optical communication, optical data storage, optical computing) The current situation and developing prospect of optical and optoelectronic industry in China are presented. Furthermore it points out that the optical industry could be developed vigorously only if products development capacity is enhanced and new products industrialization is heightened. The main research and education institutions in the optics field in China, as well as the Chinese Optical Society (COS) are introduced.
