  • The ac side current of a line commutated converter(LCC) high voltage direct current (HVDC) is characterized by highly non-sinusoidal waveform. If the harmonic current is allowed to flow in the connected ac network, it may cause unacceptable levels of distortion. Therefore, ac side filters are required as part of the total HVDC converter station, in order to reduce the harmonic distortion of the ac side current and voltage to acceptably low levels. The ac filters are also employed to compensate the requested reactive power because LCC HVDC also consume substantial reactive power. Among different types of filters, triple-tuned filters have been widely utilized for HVDC system. This paper presents two design methods of triple-tuned filter; equivalent method and parametric method. Using a parametric method, in particular this paper proposes a design algorithm for a triple tuned filter. Finally, the performance of the design algorithm is evaluated for a 250kV HVDC system in Jeju island. The results cleary demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed design method in harmonics reduction.

  • In this paper, an implementation method for digital filters using the residue arithmetic is proposed. This method can be used for processing digital signals with larger number of bits by applying the idea of the bit-slice algorithm, while previous residue digital filters can process digital signals with only a small number of bits. Furthermore, high-speed residue addition, subtrac-tion, and multiplication using look-up tables make it possible to get more flexible filters. Everything that is mentioned above is proved by implementing a cascade fourth-order Butterworth lowpass digital filter using this method.

  • In this study, a real-time simulation system and a washout algorithm for an excavator have been developed for a driving simulator with six degrees of freedom. The excavator model consisting of a boom. bucket, upper frame, lower frame and four wheels, has total 11 degrees of freedom. The suggested washout algorithm consists of high and low pass filters with second order. The high pass filters cut off low frequency of the motion cues limited by platform motion. The cut off frequency for the tilt coordination are suggested for a realistic regeneration of excavator motion.

  • This study investigated the application of terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to inspect the defects of the vegetated levee. The accuracy of vegetation filtering techniques was compared by applying filtering techniques on photogrammetric point clouds of a vegetated levee generated by terrestrial LiDAR. Representative 10 vegetation filters such as CIVE, ExG, ExGR, ExR, MExG, NGRDI, VEG, VVI, ATIN, and ISL were applied to point cloud data of the Imjin River levee. The accuracy order of the 10 techniques based on the results was ISL, ATIN, ExR, NGRDI, ExGR, ExG, MExG, VVI, VEG, and CIVE. Color filters show certain limitations in the classification of vegetation and ground and classify grass flower image as ground. Morphological filters show a high accuracy of the classification, but they classify rocks as vegetation. Overall, morphological filters are superior to color filters; however, they take 10 times more computation time. For the improvement of the vegetation removal, combined filters of color and morphology should be studied.

  • In order to implement the direct vector control type sensorless vector control, the rotor flux and the angular speed of the rotor can only be estimated through the measurement of the stationary voltage and current states. To estimate the rotor flux, the use of the rotor flux observer(RFO) has been proposed. It is known that the RFO is relatively insensitive to parameter variations. Using the rotor flux value obtained from the RFO, the rotor flux vector can be estimated. The angular speed of the rotor is estimated by the difference between the synchronous angular speed and the slip angular speed, both of which are derived from the rotor flux vector. However unwanted high order frequency waves become incorporated into the synchronous angular speed during calculations. Thus we propose the use of digital filters that will eliminate these high frequency waves. We have demonstrated through computer simulations that the use of filters results in stable system activity over a wide speed range and good response to load variations.

  • In this paper, we propose an image signal processor (ISP) for an ultra small HD-grade video sensor with 3A (AWB, AE, and AF) in camera phones that can process 720P/30fps videos. In order to enhance the video quality of the systems, it is necessary to achieve the high performance of the 3A. The proposed AWB algorithm multiplies the adjusted coefficients of color gains to the captured data of white objects. The proposed AE method adopts the index step moving based on the difference between an averaged Y luminance and a target luminance, together with IIR filters with variable time responses. The proposed AF technique controls the focus curve to find the lens position that maximizes the integrated high frequency components in luminance values by using highpass filters. Finally, we compare the image quality captured from our system to the quality of a commercial HD camcorder in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed ISP. The proposed ISP system is also fabricated with 0.18um CMOS flash memory process.

  • This paper presents the study results on the design of the correction filter to improve the azimuth error estimation of the high-speed guided missile launched from the warship after the transfer alignment. We theoretically proved that the transfer alignment performance is determined by the accuracy of the marine inertial navigation system and the observability of the attitude error state variable in the transfer alignment filter, and that most of navigation errors in high-speed guided missile are caused by azimuth error. In order to improve the azimuth estimation performance of the correction filter, the multiple adaptive estimation method and the adaptive filters adapting the measurement noise covariance or the process noise covariance are proposed. The azimuth estimation performance of the proposed adaptive filter and the existing Kalman filter are compared and analyzed each other for 8 different transfer alignment accuracy cases. As a result of comparison and analysis, it was confirmed that the adaptive filter adapting the process noise covariance has the best azimuth estimation performance. These results can be applied to the design of correction filters for high-speed guided missile.

  • In this paper, designs and test results of X-band Tx and Rx filters for satellite communications are presented. The passbands are 7.9 ~ 8.4 GHz and 7.25 ~ 7.75 GHz for the Tx filter and the Rx filter respectively. Both of the filters require very high rejection performance between the two passbands. In order to make these filters in an in-line type, non-resonating node method was adopted and E-plane junction was used for the non-resonating node. Design procedures of circuit model design and full-wave electromagnetic model design are described. The test results show that all the performances meet requirements including temperature variations and the sizes are smaller than those of domestic commercial filters by about 30 ~ 40 %.

  • Most stereo matching methods use intensity values in small image patches to measure the correspondence between two points. If the noisy pixels are used in computing the corresponding point, the matching performance becomes low. For this reason, the noise plays a critical role in determining the matching performance. In this paper, we propose a method for combining intensity and edge filters robust to the noise in order to improve the performance of stereo matching using high resolution satellite imagery. We used intensity filters such as Mean, Median, Midpoint and Gaussian filter and edge filters such as Gradient, Roberts, Prewitt, Sobel and Laplacian filter. To evaluate the performance of intensity and edge filters, experiments were carried out on both synthetic images and satellite images with uniform or gaussian noise. Then each filter was ranked based on its performance. Among the intensity and edge filters, Median and Sobel filter showed best performance while Midpoint and Laplacian filter showed worst result. We used Ikonos satellite stereo imagery in the experiments and the matching method using Median and Sobel filter showed better matching results than other filter combinations.
