  • The horn and movable parts around the gap of the conventional semi-spade rudder are visualized by high speed CCD camera with the frame rate of 4000 fps (frame per second) to study the unsteady cavity pattern on the rudder surface and gap. In addition, the pressure measurements are conducted on the rudder surface and inside the gap to find out the characteristics of the flow behavior. The rudder without propeller wake is tested at the range of $1.0{\leq}{\sigma}_v\;1.6$ and at the rudder deflection angle of $-8{\leq}{\theta}{\leq}10^{\circ}$. The time resolved cavity images are captured and show strong cavitation around the rudder gap in all deflection angles. As the deflection angle gets larger, the flow separated from the horn surface increases the strength of cavitation. The accelerated flow along the horn decreases its pressure and the separated flow from the horn increases the pressure abruptly. The pressure distribution inside the gap reveals the flow moving from the pressure to suction side. In the negative deflection angle, the turning area on the movable part initiates the flow separation and cavitation on it.

  • A compression wave is attenuated or distorted as it propagates in a tube. The present study investigated the propagation characteristics of the compression waves which are generated by a train in a high-speed railway tunnel. A Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) difference scheme was applied to one-dimensional, unsteady viscous compressible flow. The numerical calculation involved the effects of wall friction, heat transfer and energy loss due to the friction heat in the boundary layer behind the propagating compression wave, and compared with the measurement results of a shock tube and a real tunnel. The present results show that attenuation of the compression wave in turbulent boundary layer is stronger than in laminar boundary layer, but nonlinear effect of the compression wave is greater in the laminar boundary layer. The energy loss due to the frictional heat had not influence on attenuation and distortion of the propagating compression waves.

  • This paper describes aerodynamic characteristics of an Archimedes spiral wind turbine with various angles of attack. The range of angles was controlled from $-30^{\circ}$ (clockwise) to $+30^{\circ}$ (clockwise). The rotating speed of wind turbine at the same angle of attack in both directions was different. The reason why the-maximum rotational speed was observed at $15^{\circ}$ in clockwise direction can be explained based on angular momentum conservation. Quantitative flow visualization around Archimedes wind turbine blade was carried out between $-15^{\circ}$ (clockwise) and $+15^{\circ}$ (counter clockwise) using high resolution PIV method. The relationship between drag force and rotating speeds was discussed. From these results, optimum design on yawing system of Archimedes spiral wind turbine may provide high efficiency on small wind power system.

  • It is very important to measure and visualize the changes in the physical properties of fluid flow because this is the foundation of measurement techniques used in aerodynamics, heat transfer, plasma diagnostics, and stress analysis of transparent models. The optical methods are advantageous over probe-based techniques in the optical methods are of high speed, non-contact and are capable of providing full-field results with high spatial resolution. Therefore we propose the electronic speckle pattern interferometry(ESPI) that gives us a solution to overcome those limitations. In this paper the experimental results show qualitative and quantitative visualization of changes in the physical properties of the candle and alcohol lamp with 3D plotting. And we obtained the refractive index, mass density and temperature distribution of fluids. The results clearly show the process of flow phenomena and give the feasibility of quantitative interpretation of gasdynamics.

  • The present experimental study is focused on the application of multi-point simultaneous measurement by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) to rotor-stator region within centrifugal turbine pump. Six different kinds of rpm(120, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 2500) are selected as experimental condition. Optimized cross correlation identification to obtain velocity vectors is implemented by direct calculation of correlation coefficients. Fine optical setup deeply concerned with PIV performance is arranged for accurate PIV measurement of high-speed complex flow. The instantaneous and time-mean velocity distribution and velocity profile are represented quantitatively at the rotor and stator region.

  • Several samplers using gravimetric methods such as high-volume air sampler, MiniVol portable sampler, personal environmental monitor(PEM) and cyclone were applied to determine the concentrations of fine particles in atmospheric condition. Comparative evaluation between high-volume air sampler and Minivol portable sampler for $PM_{10}$, and between Minivol portable sampler and PEM was undertaken from June, 2003 to January 2004. Simultaneously, meteorological conditions such as wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity and temperature was measured to check the factors affecting the concentrations of fine particles. In addition, particle concentrations by cyclone with an aerodynamic diameter of $4{\mu}m$ were measured. Correlation coefficient between highvolume air sampler and portable air sampler for $PM_{10}$ was 0.79 (p<0.001). However, the mean concentration for $PM_{10}$ by high-volume air sampler was significantly higher than that by Minivol portable sampler (p=0.018). Correlation coefficient between Minivol portable sampler and PEM for $PM_{2.5}$ as 0.74 (p<0.001), and the measured mean concentrations for $PM_{2.5}$ did not show significant difference. Difference of the measured concentrations of fine particle might be explained by wind speed and humidity among meteorological conditions. Particle concentration differences by measurement samplers were proportional to the wind speed, but inversely proportional to the relative humidity, though it was not a significant correlation.

  • Experimental and computational studies were performed to determine the effects of different blade designs on a flow pattern inside a double-spindle counter rotating mower deck. In the experimental study, two different blade models were tested by measuring air velocities using a forward-scatter LDV system. The velocity measurements were taken at several different azimuth and axial sections inside the deck. The measured velocity distributions clarified the air flow pattern caused by the rotating blades and demonstrated the effects of deck and blade designs. A high-speed video camera and a sound level meter were used for flow visualization and noise level measurement. In the computational works, two-dimensional blade shapes at several arbitrary radial sections have been selected for flow computations around the blade model. For three-dimensional computation applied a non-inertia coordinate system, a flow field around the entire three-dimensional blade shape is used to evaluate flow patterns in order to take radial flow interactions into account. The computational results were compared with the experimental results.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation to visualize cross-sectional two-phase flow structure and identify liquid-gas interface for condensation of steam at a low mass flux in a slightly inclined tube using the axial-viewing technique, which permits to look directly into flow during condensation of steam. In this technique, two-phase flow is viewed along the axis of a pipe by locating a high-speed video camera in front of a viewer that is fitted at the outlet of the pipe. A short section of the pipe is illuminated and is recorded through the viewer, which is kept free of liquid by mildly introducing air. Experiments were conducted in a pipe of 19.05 mm in inner diameter at atmospheric pressure. Cross-sectional two-phase flow structure is obtained at a steam mass flux of $2.62kg/m^2s$ as a function of steam quality in the range from 0.5 to 0.9. The results show that stratified-wavy flow is a unique flow pattern observed in the scope of the present study. Condensate film thickness, stratification angle and void fraction were measured from the obtained flow structure images. Finally, heat transfer coefficient was calculated using the measurement data and discussed in comparison with existing correlations.

  • A digital micro holographic particle tracking velocimetry (HPTV) system consisting of a high-speed camera and a single laser with acoustic optical modulator (AOM) chopper was established. The digital micro HPTV system was applied to water flow in a micro curved-tube for measuring instantaneous 3-D velocity field data consecutively. The micro curved-tube is using to reproduce the dorsal aorta or utilize in various lap-on-a-chip. The temporal evolution of a three-dimensional water flow in the micro curved-tube (the curvature, ${\kappa}$=1/${\phi}$, 2/${\phi}$, 4/${\phi}$, 8/${\phi}$) of 100 ${\mu}m$ and 300 ${\mu}m$ inner diameters was obtained and mean velocity field distribution was obtained by statistical-averaging the instantaneous velocity fields.
