  • The treatment of high-strength swine wastewater by anaerobic digestion combined with an aquatic plant system was investigated. Anaerobic digestion of swine wastewater gave volatile solids (VS) removal efficiencies of 43.3%, 52.1% and 54.5% for hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 20, 30, 40 days, respectively. The removal efficiencies of VS, total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) decreased with increasing VS volumetric loading rate (VLR). Higher organic removal efficiency was observed at longer HRTs for the same VS volumetric loading rate. As VS volumetric loading rate increased, biogas production increased and the methane content of the biogas decreased. Experiments using duckweed (Lemna species) as an aquatic macrophyte gave the following results. In the case of nitrogen, removal efficiency was above 60% and effluent concentration was below 10.0 mg/L when the influent ammonia-N loading was about $1.0\;g/m^2/day$. In the case of phosphorus, removal efficiency was above 55% and effluent concentration was below 2.0 mg/L when the influent $PO_4$-P loading was about $0.15\;g/m^2/day$. In addition, crude protein and phosphorus content of duckweed biomass increased from 15.6% to 41.6% and from 0.8% to 1.6%, respectively, as the influent nutrient concentration increased. The treatment of high-strength swine wastewater by anaerobic digestion combined with an aquatic plant system offers good performance in terms of organics and nutrient removal for relatively low operation and maintenance costs. The results indicate that under appropriate operational conditions, the effluent quality is within the limits set by Korean discharge criteria.

  • For effective power generation with fuel cells in low-oxygen environments such as submarines and unmanned underwater vehicles, a hydrogen source which has a high hydrogen storage density is required. Diesel fuel is easy to storage and supply due to its liquid phase and it has a high density per unit volume and unit mass of hydrogen that required for driving the fuel cells. In this paper, diesel fuel was selected as a hydrogen source for driving the fuel cell in oxygen lean environments. In addition, the aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution was suggested as an alternative oxidant for hydrogen production through the diesel reforming reaction because of its high oxygen density and liquid phase which makes it easy to storage. In order to determine the characteristics of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant of diesel reforming, comparative experiments were conducted and it was found that hydrogen peroxide solution has the same characteristics when reformed with oxidants of both steam and oxygen. Moreover, the commercial diesel reforming performances were analyzed according to the reaction temperature and concentration of aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution. Then, through the 49 hours accelerated degradation tests, the possibility of hydrogen production via diesel and aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution was confirmed.

  • An experiment using preheated air in the coaxial diffusion flame burner was carried out in order to decrease NOx emission and improve the thermal efficiency. Preheated air combustion generally produces high NOx emissions but it was known very well to reduce NOx emission by diluting the combustion air with inert gas in preheated air combustion. In our study, $N_2$ gas was used for diluent and propane was utilized for fuel. We set the combustion air temperature on 300K, 500K, 700K, 900K and dilution level from 21% to 10% in terms of oxygen concentration. NOx emission increased along increment of combustion air temperature and decreased along increment of dilution level(lowering of oxygen concentration in combustion air). Flame-off limit with dilution level enhanced, flame length became longer and the location of maximum flame temperature became lower with increasing of combustion air temperature.

  • Gas sensing materials for detecting inflammable gas such as alcohol, propane, acetic acid, carbon monoxide, hydrogen were developed by utiliting $MgO-Cr_2O_3-TiO_2$ system. Between 30$0^{\circ}C$ and 50$0^{\circ}C$, reversible chemisorption becomes dominant and the electrical canduction of P-type semiconductive with the gas chemisorption. The ceramic sensor exhibits a high sensitivity to particular reducing gas such as alcohol, whereas propane and butane have little effect on the resistivity. The time response of adsorption is estimated to be about 20 sec. On the other hand, the desorption process, which corresponds to oxidation due to oxygen adsorption, take more than 60 sec. Thus the ceramic sensor can be used as a alcohol sensor in an ambient aunosphere. As the oxygen concentration is increased from 0.1 to 10 precent($10^3-10^6ppm$), the resistance decreases rapidly but stabilizes at higher concentration.

  • Numerical computations were performed for the gasification of five different coals such as Lewis-Stockton bituminous, Utah bituminous. Illinois #6 bituminous, Usibelli sub-bituminous and Beulah-Zap lignite, to assess the effect of variation in oxygen to coal ratio and steam to coal ratio on reactive flow fields within an axisymmetric, entrained-flow gasifier. The concentrations of major products, CO and $H_2$, were calculated with varying oxygen to coal ratio(0.7~1.4) and steam to coal ratio. To verify the validity of predictions, the predicted and the measured values of CO and $H_2$ concentrations at the exit of the gasifier were compared for Roto coal. Reasonable agreement was obtained between the predicted and measured values. Predictions showed that the (CO+H_2$) concentration increased gradually to its maximum value with increasing oxygen-coal ratio, and CO concentration decreased, but $H_2$ concentration increased to some extent with increasing steam-coal ratio. When the oxygen-coal ratio was between 1.0 and 1.2, and the steam-coal ratio was between 0.3 and 0.4, high values of the cold-gas efficiency were obtained.

  • For the maximum production of pullulan from glucose as a carbon source, the effects of glucose concentration, pH and dissolved oxygen concentration on the cell growth and mass production of high-molecular weight pullulan by A. pullulans ATCC 42023 were evaluated. A. pullulans showed optimum pullulan productivity when glucose concentration was 0.3M (54g/L). And inhibitory effects on the cell growth and the pullulan production were observed at the glucose concentration higher than 0.3M (54g/L). The influence of pH control and dissolved oxygen on the pullulan production and growth of A. pullulans was studied. In shake-flasks, maximum pullulan production was obtained with $11.98g/{\ell}$ when initial pH was 6.5. In the batch fermentation, the maximum pullulan production of $13.31g/{\ell}$ was obtained with constant pH 4.5. And it was found that pullulan yield and synthesis rate increased with oxygen availability. For the production of commercially useful pullulan with high-molecular weight, a mixed carbon source, which was a mixture of glucose and glucosamine, was used for the pullulan fermentation with A. pullulans. On the basis of 5% mixed carbon source, culture with 3% glucosamine with 2% glucose was optimum condition for the production of high (M.W.> 1,000,000) and medium (M.W.> 200,000) molecular weight pullulan with considerable yields of cell mass and product. And the influence of pH control on the molecular weight of pullulan was studied in batch fermentation. It was found that the productivity of high-molecular weight pullulan with pH control at 6.5 was higher than that with no pH control.

  • A novel ozonizer has been developed using a high-frequency surface discharge and a high purity alumina ceramic as its dielectric component. A thin ceramic layer, cylindrical in form, is adhered by a film-like induction electrode. An ac exciting voltage of frequency to 0.6 kHz from 1.0 kHz and $6{\sim}9kV$ peak-to-peak is applied between the electrodes to produce a stable high-frequency silent discharge for generation of ozone. A substantial reduction of the exciting voltage is also enabled by using a thin alumina ceramic layer. As a result, the ozonizer can easily produce ozone concentration($128g/m^2$ for oxygen) and power efficiency(360g/kWh for oxygen) without using a special enrichment means.

  • To prepare the transparent electrode for electronic devices such as flat panel or flexible displays, solar cells, and touch panels; tin doped $In_2O_3$ (ITO) films with low resistivity and a high transparency were fabricated using a facing target sputtering (FTS) system at the various oxygen gas flow rate. The carrier concentration and mobility of ITO films were measured by Hall Effect measurement. And the transmittance was measured using the UV-VIS spectrometer. As a result, we can obtain the ITO thin films prepared at 10% oxygen gas flow ratio, thickness 150 nm with transmittance 85% and resistivity $8.1{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ and surface roughness 5.01 nm.

  • Carbon black, a particulate form of pure elemental carbon, is an industrial chemical with the high potential of occupational exposure. Although the relationship between exposure to particulate matters (PM) and cardiovascular diseases is well established, the cardiovascular risk of carbon black has not been characterized clearly. In this study, the cytotoxicity of carbon black to vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells were examined to investigate the potential vascular toxicity of carbon black. Carbon black with distinct particle size, N330 (primary size, 28~36 nm) and N990 (250~350 nm) were treated to A-10, rat aortic smooth muscle cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cell line, ECV304, and cell viability was assessed by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage assay. Treatment of carbon black N990 resulted in the significant reduction of viability in A-10 cells at 100 ${\mu}g$/ml, the highest concentration tested, while N330 failed to cause cell death. Cytotoxicity to ECV304 cells was induced only by N330 at higher concentration, 200 ${\mu}g$/ml, suggesting that ECV304 cells were relatively resistant to carbon black. Treatment of 100 ${\mu}g$/ml N990 led to the elevation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) detected by dichlorodihydrofluorescein (DCF) in A-10 cells. Pretreatment of antioxidants, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and sulforaphane restored decreased viability of N990-treated A-10 cells, and N-acetylcysteine, but not sulforaphane, attenuated N990-induced ROS generation in A-10 cells. Taken together, present study shows that carbon black is cytotoxic to vascular cells, and the generation of reactive oxygen contributes to the development of cytotoxicity. ROS scavenging antioxidant could be a potential strategy to attenuate the toxicity induced by carbon black exposure.
