  • The intrauterine irradiation is essential to achieve adequate tumor dose to centeral tumor mass in radio therapy for uterine malignancy. The complications of pelvic organ are known to be directly related to radiation dose and physical parameters. The comparison study of currently using 2 systems was undertaken. The simulation films and medical records of 135 patients who was treated with intrauterine irradiation at one of general hospitals in Busan and Seoul between Jan. 1983 and June 1983, were critically analized and physical parameters of low dose rate system and remote controlled high dose rate system were measured. The physical parameters include distances between lateral walls of vaginal fornices, longitudinal and lateral angles of tandem to the body axis, the distance from the external os of uterine cervix to the central axis of ovoids, the radiation dose ratio to rectum and bladder to reference point A. Followings were summary of study results: 1. In distances between lateral walls of vaginal fornices the low dose rate system showed wide distribution and relatively larger distances. In low dose rate system 5.0-5.9 cm was $55.89\%$ 6.0-6.9 cm: $23.53\%$, 4.0-4.9cm: $10.29\%$, 3.0-3.9cm: $10.29\%$, and in high dose rate system 5.0-5.9cm was $80.59\%$, 4.0-4.9cm: $17.91\%$, $6.0\~6.9\;cm:\;1.5\%$. 2. In lateral angulation of tandem to body axis, the low does system revealed mid position (the position along body axis) $64.7\%$, Lt. deviation $19.13\%$ and Rt. deviation $16.17\%$. However the high dose rate system revealed mid position $49.26\%$ Lt. deviation $40.29\%$ and Rt. deviation $10.45\%$. 3. • The biological effects of radiation are dependent on the dose rate and dose of radiation. In this study, effects of dose and dose rate using whole body radiation on plasma cytokines and blood count from male BALB/c mice were evaluated. We examined the blood and cytokine changes in mice exposed to a low (3.49m Gy $h^{-1}$) and high (2.6 Gy $min^{-1}$) dose rate of radiation at a total dose of 0.5 and 2 Gy, respectively. Blood from mice exposed to radiation were evaluated using cytokine assays and complete blood count. Peripheral lymphocytes and neutrophils decreased in a dose dependent manner following high dose rate radiation. The peripheral lymphocytes population remained unchanged following low dose rate radiation; however, the neutrophils population increased after radiation. The sera from these mice exhibited elevated levels of flt3 ligand and granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), after high/low dose rate radiation. These results suggest that low-dose-rate radiation does not induce blood damage, which was unlike high-dose-rate radiation treatment; low-dose-rate radiation exposure activated the hematopoiesis through the increase of flt3 ligand and G-CSF.

  • This study gives the optimal reaction conditions, reaction mechanisms, reaction rates leaded from the oxidation of phenol by electron beam accelerator and ozone used for recent water treatment. It gives the new possibility of water treatment process to effectively manage industrial sewage containing toxic organic compounds and biological refractory materials. The high decomposition of phenol was observed at the low dose rate, but at this low dose rate, the reaction time was lengthened. So we must find out the optimal dose rate to promote high oxidation of reactants. The reason why the TOC value of aqueous solution wasn't decreased at the low dose was that there were a lot of low molecular organic acids as an intermediates such as formic acid or glyoxalic acid. In order to use both electron beam accelerator and biological treatment for high concentration refractory organic compounds, biological treatment is needed when low molecular organic compounds exist abundantly in sewage. In this experiment, the condition of making a lot of organic acids is from 5 kGy into 20 kGy dose. Decomposition rate of phenol by electron beam accelerator was first order reaction up to 300ppm phenol solution on the basic of TOC value and also showed first order reaction by using both air and ozone as an oxidants.

  • Deleterious effects of high dose radiation exposure with high-dose-rate are unarguable, but they are still controversial in low-dose-rate. The regulator of G-protein signaling (RGS) is a negative regulator of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling. In addition, it is reported that irradiation stress led to GPCR-mediated mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and phosphotidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-k) signaling. The RGS mRNA expression profiles by whole body radiation with low-dose-rate has not yet been explored. In the present study, we, therefore, examined which RGS was modulated by the whole body radiation with low-dose-rate ($3.49mGy{\cdot}h^{-1}$). Among 16 RGS expression tested, RGS6, RGS13 and RGS16 mRNA were down-regulated by low-dose-rate irradiation. This is the first report that whole body radiation with low-dose-rate can modulate the different RGS expression levels. These results are expected to reveal the potential target and/or the biomarker proteins associated with male testis toxicity induced by low-dose-rate irradiation, which might contribute to understanding the mechanism beyond the testis toxicity.

  • This study was measured the radiation-induced current - X-ray dose, dose rate, X-ray quality, time, temperature, electric field characteristics and the dependence of gap length in insulating oil under of D.C. Voltage before, during and after X-ray irradiation. The obtained results can be summarized as following. 1. The radiation - induced current is more the dependence of X-ray quality (tube voltage) than quantity (tube current), the dependence of quantity is appeared at the high than low X-.ay tube voltage. 2. The dependence of dose rate is appeared at the more dose rate, and ${\triangle}\;=\;0.64{\sim}0.74$. 3. The higher temperature of insulating oil and X-ray tube voltage (X-ray quality) is increased, at the low electric field, the more radiation-induced current. 4. $G_{eq}-G_{o}(={\triangle}G)$ is increased at the low than high temperature, high than low X-ray quality. 5. The dependence of temperature is appeared before than during X-ray irradiation. 6. The RIC saturation region is appeared at the high than low insulating oil temperature during (1000 V/cm above) than before (4000 V/cm above) X-ray irradiation.

  • To determine the effect of low dose gamma radiation on the germination and enzyme activities, seeds of Chinese cabbage (Brassica compestris L. cv. Hanyoreum) and radish (Raphanus sativus L. cv. Chungsukoungzoung) were irradiated at the dose of 2-50 Gy. The germination rate of irradiation group was higher than that of the control. Especially it was highest at the early stage. The germination rate of Chinese cabbage was high at 2 Gy and 8 Gy irradiation group and that of radish was high at 2 Gy, 6 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation group. Growth of both seedlings of Chinese cabbage and radish increased positively in low dose irradiation group. The height of Chinese cabbage was noticeably high at 4 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation group and that of radish at 6 Gy irradiation group. The protein contents of seedlings from seeds irradiated with the low dose gamma radiation was higher than the control, especially at the early stage. The enzyme activities of seedlings from seeds irradiated with the low dose gamma radiation was high at 4 Gy and 10 Gy irradiation group. These results suggest that the germination, growth and enzyme activities of old vegetable seeds could be promoted by the low dose gamma radiation.

  • Brachytherapy is an essential part of radiotherapy for uterine cervical cancer. The low dose rate (LDR) regimen has been the major technique of intracavitary therapy for cervical cancer. However, there has been an expansion in the last 20 years of high dose rate (HDR) machines using Ir-192 sources. Since 1979, HDR brachytherapy has been used for the treatment of uterine cervical cancer in Korea. The number of institutions employing HDR has been increasing, while the number of low dose rate system has been constant. In 1995, there was a total 27 HDR brachytherapy units installed and 1258 cases of patients with cervical cancer were treated with HDR Most common regimens of HDR brachytherapy are total dose of 30-39 Gy at point A with 10-13 fractions in three fractions per week. 24-32 Gy with 6-8 fractions in two fractions per week, and 30-35 Gy with 6-7 fractions in two fractions per week. The average fractionation regimen of HDR brachytherapy is about 8 fractions of 4.1 Gy each to Point A. In Korea, treatment results for HDR brachytherapy are comparable with the LDR series and appears to be a safe and effective alternative to LDR therapy for the treatment of cervical carcinoma. Studies from the major centers report the five-year survival rate of cervical cancer as. 78-86$\%$ for Stage 1, 68-85$\%$ for stage 11, and 38-56$\%$ for Stage III. World-wide questionnaire study and Japanese questionnaire survey of multiple institutions showed no survival difference in any stages and dose-rate effect ratio (HDR/LDR) was calculated to be 0.54 to 0.58. However the optimum treatment doses and fractionation schemes appropriate to generate clinical results comparable to conventional LDR schemes have yet to be standardized. In conclusion, HDR intracavitary radiotherapy is increasingly practiced in Korea and an effective treatment modality for cervical cancer. To determine the optimum radiotherapy dose and fractionation schedule, a nation-wide prospective study is necessary in Korea. In addition, standardization of HDR application (clinical, computer algorithms, and dosimetric aspects) is necessary.

  • A portable count-ratemeter and a thermoluminescent detector ($CaSO_4:Dy$) have been used to obtain total gamma dose rates at approximately 50 locations during the course of several survey trips in the southeastern Korea. The purposes of these measurement were to provide a future reference data and to establish the approximate range of population exposure to the natural environmental radiation. The natural levels encountered ranged from a low of 14.6 microroentgen per hour to a high of 18.9 microroentgen per hour with a mean of $16.3{\pm}1.0$ microroentgen per hour. Among these results are the relatively high natural dose rate levels in the Masan area and Yangsan-Tongdosa area with the relatively low natural dose rate levels in the Gyeongsan-Cheongdo area and the Samrangjin-Jinyeong-Gimhae area.
