This paper intends to identify experimentally the relationship between transverse vibration behavior of a spinning disk and high-frequency fluctuation in the driving torque. A testrig has been developed using a CD-ROM disk, a driving motor with torque-varying capability and a power transmission belt and a laser vibrometer was employed to measure the transverse vibration displacements of the disk for a certain range of the spinning speed. The results show that the spinning speed and the magnitude and frequency of the torque fluctuation affect the stability of the disk. In other word, the torque fluctuation causes the instability of the disk at several ranges of the spinning speed below the critical speed and its effects become larger as the disk spins faster or the magnitude of torque fluctuation becomes bigger. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with analytical estimation.
Conventional integral-slot design in permanent magnet(PM) motor tends to have a high cogging torque and large end turns, which contribute to copper losses. The fractional-slot design is effective compared to integral-slot design in the cogging torque and electromotive force(EMF) waveform. The effectiveness of fractional slot can be maximized by selecting optimal pole to slot ratio. This paper presents the effect of pole to slot ratio on the cogging torque and EMF waveform in the PM motor with fractional-slot. The effectiveness of the proposed designs has been confirmed by comparing waveform of EMF. cogging torque and torque ripple between conventional and new models.
This paper discusses study of torque ripple minimization employing an improved TDF(torque distribution function)-based instantaneous torque control to reduce acoustic noise and vibration problem of the SRM. As the flux linkage of the SRM is a nonlinear function of phase current and rotor position, design of optimal controller for the SRM is quite complicated. Hence, an accurate mathematical model considering the nonlinearity of the SRM is required. An improved TDF based torque control has been proposed in order to reduce the toque ripple at high speed operation. Dynamic simulation using Matlab/Simulink as well as Finite Element Analysis is presented. A prototype SRM for electric vehicle traction has been manufactured to validate the experimental results comparing the dynamic simulation results.
Mutual torque ripple in a brushless DC motor is the main source of acoustic noise, especially fur motor operation with high speed and torque. This paper presents a method to obtain mutual torque ripple to identify acoustic noise source. Mutual torque ripple can be determined by analyzing phase current shape and magnetic circuit with different lead angles. Current shape is determined by state space model of voltage equation with the use of inductance calculated by FEM, and confirmed by experimental results. Mutual torque ripple is also determined by FEM analysis for the calculated current shape. Acoustic noise experiment reveals that mutual torque ripple with different lead angle is one of the main sources for noise generation in a brushless DC motor.
Research on walking assistance exoskeletons that provide optimized torque to individuals has been conducted steadily, and these studies aim to help users feel stable when walking and get help that suits their intentions. Because exoskeleton auxiliary efficiency evaluation is based on metabolic cost savings, experiments on real people are needed to evaluate continuously evolving control algorithms. However, experiments with real people always require risks and high costs. Therefore, in this study, we intend to actively utilize human musculoskeletal simulation. First, to improve the accuracy of musculoskeletal models, we propose a body segment mass distribution algorithm using body composition analysis data that reflects body characteristics. Secondly, the efficiency of most exoskeleton torque control algorithms is evaluated as the reduction rate of Metabolic Cost. In this study, we assume that the torque minimizing the Metabolic Cost is the optimal torque and propose a method for obtaining the torque.
We propose an interior permanent magnet syhchronous motor (IPMSM) with arc-shape ferrite permanent magnets (PMs) as a substitute for the rare-earth permanent magnet, and determine its optimal design through parametric study. First, we use 2D finite element analysis to analyze 4-poles and 6-slots initial model according to performance requirements and design parameters. The current angle of the maximum average torque considered in the analysis is different compared with the current angle of the minimum torque ripple. Thus, the parametric study for optimal rotor design is performed by varying the thickness and the offset radius of the PMs according to current angle. In particular, a narrow bridge is required in conventional IPMSM for reducing flux leakage; however, the increase in cogging torque in the analysis model saturates the narrow bridge (large offset radius). Therefore, we suggest an appropriate shape considering limiting conditions such as DC link voltage, average torque, torque ripple, and cogging torque taking into account performance requirements.
A new control method for precision robust position control of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor using asymptotically stable adaptive load torque observer is presented in the paper. Precision position control is obtained for the BLDC motor system approximately linearized using the field-orientation method Recently, many of these drive systems use BLDC motors to avoid backlashe. However, the disadvantages of the motor are high cost and complex control because of nonlinear characteristics. Also, the load torque disturbance directly affects the motor shaft. The application of the load torque observer is published in [1] using fixed gain. However, the motor flux linkage is not exactly known for a load torque observer. There is the problem of uncertainty to obtain very high precision position control. Therefore a model reference adaptive observer is considered to overcome the problem of unknown parameter and torque disturbance in this paper. The system stability analysis is carried out using Lyapunov stability theorem. As a result, asymptotically stable observe gain can be obtained without affecting the overall system response. The load disturbance detected by the asymptotically stable adaptive observer is compensated by feedforwarding the equivalent current which gives fast response. The experimenta results are presented in the paper.

Interest in spin-torque oscillators (STOs) has been increasing due to their potential use in communication devices. In particular the magnetic tunnel junction-based STO (MTJ-STO) with high perpendicular anisotropy is gaining attention since it can generate high output power. In this paper, a circuit-level model for an in-plane magnetized MTJ-STO with partial perpendicular anisotropy is proposed. The model includes the perpendicular torque and the shift field for more accurate modeling. The bias voltage dependence of perpendicular torque is represented as quadratic. The model is written in Verilog-A, and simulated using HSPICE simulator with a current-mirror circuit and a multi-stage wideband amplifier. The simulation results show the proposed model can accurately replicate the experimental data such that the power increases and the frequency decreases as the value of the perpendicular anisotropy gets close to the value of the demagnetizing field.
This paper aims at developing a torque model for the high-speed tapping with small-diameter taps. As recent industries such as automobile and information technology grows, taps smaller than 5mm in diameter are needed much more. In that occasion, the friction force between a tap surface and a workpiece plays much more important role in the tapping torque than in he larger tapping. Tapping mechanism was analysed based on the tap geometry. It has two steps : one is a forward cutting composed of the chamfered threading and full threading and the other is the backward cutting. The torque by the cutting force in the chamfered threading is calculated using the cutting area and the specific cutting force while the torque by the friction force, which is rather dominant than the cutting force both in the full threading and in the backward cutting, is calculated using the normal force on the threads and the friction coefficient. The experiment has shown that the results by the proposed torque model fit quite well with the acutal measurements within the error of 10%.
Objective: Resistance exercise is a necessary element to improve quality of life, and measurement and evaluation of muscle strength provide important information for prescription and management of rehabilitation and exercise programs. This study analyzed the correlation between direct and indirect 1RM for isokinetic maximum torque of the knee joint in order to provide useful information in the field of exercise programs. In addition, the flexion-extension ratio and the difference in left-right deviation were verified. Design: A cross-sectional study Methods: The subjects of this study were 33 healthy adult men and women without medical problems who participated in the health exercise class program at S University in Seoul. The correlation between isokinetic maximum torque and direct and indirect 1RM was analyzed, and a dependent t-test was performed to analyze the flexion-extension ratio and left-right deviation. Results: There was a high correlation between the isokinetic maximum torque and direct and indirect 1RM, and no statistically significant difference was shown between the test methods in the analysis of the flexion-extension ratio and left-right deviation. Conclusions: Isokinetic muscle function measuring equipment is expensive, so it is difficult to use it in local exercise rehabilitation and training sites. Through this study, it was found that direct and indirect 1RM isokinetic maximum torque showed a high correlation, and there was no difference in evaluating muscle function such as flexion-extension ratio and left-right deviation. Therefore, it is considered that the muscle function evaluation using 1RM in general field can be usefully utilized.
