  • Multi-dimensional fire dynamics were studied numerically with the change in ventilation conditions in a full-scale ISO 9705 room. Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) was used for the identical conditions conducted in previous experiments. Flow rate and doorway width were changed to create over-ventilated fire (OVF) and under-ventilated fire (UVF). From the numerical simulation, it was found that the internal flow pattern rotated in the opposite direction for the UVF relative to the OVF so that a portion of products recirculated to the inside of compartment. Significant change in flow pattern with ventilation conditions may affect changes in the complex process of CO and soot formation inside the compartment due to increase in the residence time of high-temperature products. The fire behavior in the UVF created complex 3D characteristics of species distribution as well as thermal and flow structures. In particular, additional burning near the side wall inside the compartment significantly affected the flow pattern and CO production. The distribution of CO inside the compartment was explained with 3D $O_2$ distribution and flow patterns. It was observed that gas sampling at local positions in the upper layer were insufficient to completely characterize the internal structure of the compartment fire.

  • Pine twigs with buds were cut into $2{\sim}3\;mm$ long pieces and about 18g was used for each experiment. Pressure and temperature ranges employed were $100{\sim}300\;bar$ and $35{\sim}55^{\circ}C$, respectively. Volatile compounds of extracts were isolated and identified by gas chromatography and mass selective detector. Twenty three compounds from the extracts were identified. Limonene and ${\beta}-pinene$ were found to be the major components with $32.6{\sim}43.4%$ being limonene. Extracts obtained by supercritical fluid extraction were lower in monoterpene and higher in oxygenated terpenoids than those by steam distillation and solvent extraction (SDE). Sensory evaluation showed that the pine flavor extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide was much better in quality than that of SDE. In conclusion, it was found out that supercritical fluid extraction can successfully be applied to extract high quality flavor from pine.

  • Portable artificial electronic nose (E-nose) system suffers from noisy fluctuation in surroundings such as temperature, vapor concentration, and gas flow, because its measuring condition is not controled precisely as in the laboratory. It is important to develop a simple and robust vapor recognition technique applicable to this uncontrolled measurement, especially for the portable measuring and diagnostic system which are expanding its area with the improvements in micro bio sensor technology. This study used a PDA-based portable E-nose to collect the uncontrolled vapor measurement signals, and applied the image matching algorithm developed in the previous study on the measured signal to verify its robustness and improved accuracy in portable vapor recognition. The results showed not only its consistent performance under noisy fluctuation in the portable measurement signal, but also an advanced recognition accuracy for 2 similar vapor species which have been hard to discriminate with the conventional maximum sensitivity feature extraction method. The proposed method can be easily applied to the data processing of the ubiquitous sensor network (USN) which are usually exposed to various operating conditions. Furthermore, it will greatly help to realize portable medical diagnostic and environment monitoring system with its robust performance and high accuracy.

  • We tried to extract bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) from the freeze-dried bovine cortical bone (FBCB) for bone graft, which were defatted with chloroform-methanol for 20 days, freeze-dried at $-80^{\circ}C$ for 7 days and sterilized by ethylene oxide gas. Two kg of FBCB were pulverized in a wheel mill to $0.5-2.0mm^3$ cubic in size. The bone particles were demineralized in 0.6N HCI for 10 days at chloroform-methanol$4^{\circ}C$ and defatted with chloroform-methanol for 6 hours at room temperature, which was going to be defatting and demineralized cortical bone (DDM). For extracting BMP, DDM was agitated continuously through 72 hours with magnetic stirrer at $4^{\circ}C$ into 12 times of volume of 6 M guanidine hydrochloride (Gdn-HCl) solution containing proteinase inhibitors to protect BMP such as 2mM N-ethylaleimide, 1mM iodoacetic acid, 1mM phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride and a sterilizer, 1mM sodium azide. The extraction procedure was repeated for three times. All extracted solution was centrifuged at 10,000 rpm for 30 min and then, the supernatant was dialyzed with 12 times of volume of deionized water at $4^{\circ}C$ for 24-72 hours, which cut off below 6,000-8,000 molecular weight. The dialyzed specimen contained crude-BMP was centrifuged, freeze-dried, and weighted. Through these processing, we could obtained $84.9\%$ as FBCB, $17.8\%$ as DDM and $0.71\%$ as crude-BMP from the wet cortical bone without cancellous bone, marrow and muscles. The crude-BMP were obtained $68.3\%$ from the first extraction, $29.6\%$ from secondary and $2.1\%$ from tertiary, respectively. It was suggested that high yield of crude-BMP migth be explained by three-time repetition of the extraction processing for crude-BMP with Gdn-Hcl sol.

  • The diamond films which can be applied to SOD (silicon-on-diamond) structure were deposited on Si(100) substrate using CO/H2 CH4/H2 source gases by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition(MPCVD), and SOD structure have been fabricated by poly-silicon film deposited on the diamond/Si(100) structure y low pressure chemical vapor deposition(LPCVD). The phase of the diamond film, surface morpholog, and diamond/Si(100) interface were confirmed by X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), atomic force microscopy(AFM), and Raman spectroscopy. The dielectric constant, leakage current and resistivity as a function of temperature in films are investigated by C-V and I-V characteristics and four-point probe method. The high quality diamond films without amorphous carbon and non-diamond elements were formed on a Si(100), which could be obtained by CO/H2 and CH4/H2 concentration ratio of 15.3% and 1.5%, respectively. The (111) plane of diamond films was preferentially grown on the Si(100) substrate. The grain size of the films deposited by CO/H2 are gradually increased from 26nm to 36 nm as deposition times increased. The well developed cubo-octahedron 100 structure nd triangle shape 111 are mixed together and make smooth and even film surface. The surface roughness of the diamond films deposited by under the condition of CO/H2 and CH4/H2 concentration ratio of 15.3% and 1.5% were 1.86nm and 3.7 nm, respectively, and the diamond/Si(100) interface was uniform resistivity of the films deposited by CO/H2 concentration ratio of 15.3% are obtained 5.3, 1$\times$10-9 A/cm, 1 MV/cm2, and 7.2$\times$106 $\Omega$cm, respectively. In the case of the films deposited by CH4/H2 resistivity are 5.8, 1$\times$10-9 A/cm, 1 MV/cm, and 8.5$\times$106 $\Omega$cm, respectively. In this study, it is known that the diamond films deposited by using CO/H2 gas mixture as a carbon source are better thane these of CH4/H2 one.

  • Bromotrifluoromethane(halon-1301) and bromochlorodifluoromethane(halon-1211) have been widely used as a clean fire extinguishing agents due to their outstanding properties. However, production and use of halon are currently being phased out under an international agreements Montreal Protocol because of global environmental concerns and HFCs have been considered as promising alter-natives for the replacement of halon since their ozone depletion potentials are low. The vapor-liquid equilibrium data are required as important basic information in evaluating the solubility of clean fire extinguishing agents and determining their optimal compositions. In this work, we chose HFCs such as HFC-22 HFC-125, and HFC-l34a for gaseous fire extinguishing agents and nitrogen as a pressurization gas for a proper jet velocity of these agents. Phase equilibria for binary mixtures of nitrogen/HFC-22, nitrogen/HFC-125, and nitrogen/HFC-l34a were measured in the temperature range from 283.15K to 303.15K. For equilibrium measurement, we used a circulation type apparatus in which both vapor and liquid phases were continuously recirculated. The experimental data were relatively well correlated with the Peng-Robinson equation of state with Wong-Sandier mixing rules.

  • The purpose for this study is to inquire into the effects of teaching methods in the class on the conceptual change of atmospheric pressure for middle school students. After analyzing the concept of atmospheric pressure in the middle school science textbooks on the present 7th Curriculum, classes were performed adopting classified Method A and Method B. For Method A, the textbook used that explains the concept in the view of weight. For Method B, the textbook used approaching to the concept in the views of molecular movement as well as of weight. This study consists of four classes in the third grade students of middle school in Busan, which were divided into the Method A group and the Method B group. The result of the study carried out pre-post each of these classes on the learning achievement and on the conceptual change of atmospheric pressure. The result of this study were as follows: First, the effect on the learning achievement was displayed the average score of the Method B was showing meaningful difference comparing to the Method A. Second, the effect on the conceptual change measured by verifying the score for the difference among the averages for each sub-scale three out of four conceptual factors, 'the direction of atmospheric influence and the reason', 'the principle of atmospheric action' and 'the atmospheric changes by the temperature rise on the surface of the earth and the reason', showed meaningful improvement. But, the one left factor, 'the distribution of atmospheric pressure by altitudes and the reason', displayed no meaningful difference. Third, The concept of atmospheric pressure is better defined as the pressure created by the movement of air particles, in the view of kinetic theory of gas, rather than explained by the notion of the weight of air.

  • As the awareness of the environmental crisis has recently increased around the world, numerous studies in the transport industry have been conducted to solve this problem through lightweight car bodies. The hot-stamping process has been presented as solution to achieve a light weight. Hot-stamping is a method that is used to obtain ultra-high strength steel (1,500 MPa or greater) by simultaneously forming and cooling boron steel in a press die after heating it to a temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ or above. This study involved a, fundamental examination of laser parameters to investigate the laser weldability of boron steel. As a result, the following optimum parameters for the shielding gas were found: Q = 20 l/min, ${\alpha}=40^{\circ}$, d = 20mm, and l = 0 mm. The hardness of butt weldment increasesed sharply as a result of martensite formation at the fusion zone.

  • Silicon microwire array is one of the promising platforms as a means for developing highly efficient solar cells thanks to the enhanced light trapping efficiency. Among the various fabrication methods of microstructures, deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) process has been extensively used in fabrication of high aspect ratio microwire arrays. In this presentation, we show precisely controlled Si microwire arrays by tuning the DRIE process conditions. A periodic microdisk arrays were patterned on 4-inch Si wafer (p-type, $1{\sim}10{\Omega}cm$) using photolithography. After developing the pattern, 150-nm-thick Al was deposited and lifted-off to leave Al microdisk arrays on the starting Si wafer. Periodic Al microdisk arrays (diameter of $2{\mu}m$ and periodic distance of $2{\mu}m$) were used as an etch mask. A DRIE process (Tegal 200) is used for anisotropic deep silicon etching at room temperature. During the process, $SF_6$ and $C_4F_8$ gases were used for the etching and surface passivation, respectively. The length and shape of microwire arrays were controlled by etching time and $SF_6/C_4F_8$ ratio. By adjusting $SF_6/C_4F_8$ gas ratio, the shape of Si microwire can be controlled, resulting in the formation of tapered or vertical microwires. After DRIE process, the residual polymer and etching damage on the surface of the microwires were removed using piranha solution ($H_2SO_4:H_2O_2=4:1$) followed by thermal oxidation ($900^{\circ}C$, 40 min). The oxide layer formed through the thermal oxidation was etched by diluted hydrofluoric acid (1 wt% HF). The surface morphology of a Si microwire arrays was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM, Hitachi S-4800). Optical reflection measurements were performed over 300~1100 nm wavelengths using a UV-Vis/NIR spectrophotometer (Cary 5000, Agilent) in which a 60 mm integrating sphere (Labsphere) is equipped to account for total light (diffuse and specular) reflected from the samples. The total reflection by the microwire arrays sample was reduced from 20 % to 10 % of the incident light over the visible region when the length of the microwire was increased from $10{\mu}m$ to $30{\mu}m$.

  • Boron nitride (BN) films have attracted a growing interest for a variety of t technological applications due to their excellent characteristics, namely hardness, c chemical inertness, and dielectrical behavior, etc. There are two crystalline phases 1551; of BN that are analogous to phases of carbon. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has a a layered s$\sigma$ucture which is spz-bonded structure similar to that of graphite, and is t the stable ordered phase at ambient conditions. Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) has a z zinc blende structure with sp3-bonding like as diamond, 따ld is the metastable phase a at ambient conditions. Among of their prototypes, especially 삼Ie c-BN is an i interesting material because it has almost the same hardness and thermal c conductivity as di없nond. C Conventionally, significant progress has been made in the experimental t techniques for synthesizing BN films using various of the physical vapor deposition 밍ld chemical vapor deposition. But, the major disadvantage of c-BN films is that t they are much more difficult to synthesize than h-BN films due to its narrow s stability phase region, high compression stress, and problem of nitrogen source c control. Recent studies of the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of I III - V compound have established that a molecular level understanding of the d deposition process is mandatory in controlling the selectivity parameters. This led t to the concept of using a single source organometallic precursor, having the c constituent elements in stoichiometric ratio, for MOCVD growth of 삼Ie required b binary compound. I In this study, therefore, we have been carried out the growth of h-BN thin f films on silicon substrates using a single source precursors. Polycrystalline h-BN t thin films were deposited on silicon in the temperature range of $\alpha$)() - 900 $^{\circ}$C from t the organometallic precursors of Boron-Triethylamine complex, (CZHs)3N:BRJ, and T Tris(dimethylamino)Borane, [CH3}zNhB, by supersonic molecular jet and remote p plasma assisted MOCVD. Hydrogen was used as carrier gas, and additional nitrogen w was supplied by either aDlIDonia through a nozzle, or nitrogen via a remote plasma. T The as-grown films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x x-ray pthotoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, t transmission electron diffraction, optical transmission, and atomic force microscopy.roscopy.
